September 2015: This 'Pizza Institution' just went vegan, and they continue make extremely good pizzas! They definitely don't taste like anything is missing... Genius!! The dough is tasty and cooked 'Napolitana style'; although the pizzas are a few inches bigger than the standard. I went to the party to preview the new menu and it was a resounding success: the new topping combinations are very tasty, and healthy too! It's the new got to try pizza place in Sydney. I'm definitely going back.

This was our third restaurant for the Sydney Pizza Festival, having previously gone to La Disfida in Haberfield and Ventuno in Millers Point. This would be third on my list, I wasn't impressed with their pizza at all. It is only one notch above from our local pizza shops. In fact, I would rather choose Secret Slice or even Crust over Gigi. Service wasn't too good either, there was a long wait before we got served. I understand it was a busy night but it seems they are always busy anyway so they should know how to cope up with the crowds. Our waitress kept getting our food and drink orders wrong, serving us with items none of us had ordered.

My experience at Gigi is never consistent. The first time was 'meh'. The second was 'hells yeah!' And the third, somewhere in between. I always get the same salad on the specials board of baby spinach, goat cheese, pine nuts and balsamic dressing. At times it can be good, but on others it is mind-blowing, earth-shattering good. I just wish it were the latter every single time. For pizza I have tried Margherita, Caprese, Napoli, Diavola and San Daniele, all pizzas varying each time I go back. I have also had the Canneloni on two separate occasions, and unfortunately like everything else, it was 'just ok' on the first but amazingly good on the second. The one thing that never changes and always manages to keep me smiling when I leave is the Chocolate Tart. Yes, please! The waiters, like the food, can also be inconsistent. I have had the same waiter several times and one week he may be overly happy but downright cold the next. What gives? Gigi, if you got your act together and was consistently good every time I visited you, you would be a solid 5 stars, but until then 4 stars will have to do.

The pizza is good. There aren't too many pizza places in the area so don't be distracted by the rest of the menu. Just order pizza. The service is dubious, sometimes ok, sometimes poor. The restaurant itself is noisy, so be prepared to yell. Or just not talk to your dining partners? This place has been around a while and is not doing anything particularly amazing. Worth a try if you like pizza, but don't pass up a fave restaurant for this place as you may be disappointed.

Gigi, your pizza is amazing, but please dear god get some airconditioning! I love going here for piping hot and oh so tasty pizza on a cold winter's night, but come summer, Gigi gets stifling. Ok you're getting woodfired pizza, which is crisp and delicious with an array of toppings to please even the pickiest (or traditionalist) of pizza lovers. I get that woodfired ovens pump out the heat, but in summer you're going to leave your lovely dinner as a complete sweat spot. So you definitely need to go to Gigi's - just choose a cool night!

Lucio's is about the same distance walk from Hyde Park, just in the other direction, tucked in a quiet residential area. They don't take reservations so we made sure we were there right at 6 when they opened. Friendly servers stacked some tables up and we enjoyed the outdoor-cafe ambiance watching people in a stroll or arriving at ours and the other little restaurants in the square. The pizza was just what we've come to expect from certified Neopolitano pizzerias. The crust is key: thin, chewy and delicious. They have a wide variety of toppings. We loved the Calzone but just as toppings on the pizza, the Fontina, the arugula-prosciutto one and the white-sauce broccoli. We ordered the 1 meter pizza (which is NOT a diameter like we were thinking - more like 4 pizzas in a row) but it wasn't enough so we ordered another 1/2 meter. The rocket-pear salad was also very good. We finished the equivalent of 6 pizzas between 8 adults and 3 kids. One of us was gluten free so they brought a mozzarella/prosciutto plate. The location was nice. The kids could run around the square while we sat and chatted. It filled up quickly - if you have a big group get there early.

Pretty interesting combos like the Rumble in the Jungle with pumpkin and green peas, the Popeye Power with hummus, and the Happy Daize with vegan ricotta. They have salads as well but I was too distracted by having more than one vegan option! Food: 4 stars Definitely an experience. Hummus on a pizza, check. Vegan ricotta, check. Deliciousness galore, check check. I had the Popeye Power and subbed the vegan ricotta for the mozzarella. I've never had hummus on a pizza before and was a welcome change. Loved the brininess of the olives w/ the acid of the lemon wedge. The ricotta rounded it out and melded w/ the creaminess of the hummus. Repeatability: 5.0 stars Great for both vegans and meat eaters. However, I don't think it's possible to request for half vegan/half meat pies. It was near closing time when we dropped by and I didn't see any vegan pies out so had to order a whole one. Disclaimer: it takes about 15-20 mins. The pie is b/w a standard U.S. med and large. This place was the only pizza joint in the area that actually stayed open as they stated online. Major plus as we went to three others. It was meant to be. They let us eat at the counter while they cleaned; they even continued to take slice orders. The folks were super nice and the cashier lady (I should have gotten her name) was incredibly helpful.

You can take as much pizza and pasta as you want during the time. Most of the pizzas were very good! They were all unique, but some were a bit salty - and beware of the strong blue cheese! The pastas weren't really that great...pretty basic. For $25, it's worth it for the unique experience, but I probably wouldn't go back. It'd be nice if the dessert pizza was included, rather than a separate fee just for some Nutella on bread.

Situated in Brisbane St, the little laneway connecting Oxford St to Harmony Park in Surry Hills, this joint replaces a little Japanese restaurant that had been there for 16 years. As everyone that passed the 6th grade knows, Einstein's Formula for Deliciousness states: Innovative concept + brilliant service + delicious food + amazing value + All You Can Eat = ten truckloads of WIN. Here's how it works: you pay either $20 (unlimited pizza & pasta) or $29 (unlimited pizza or pasta + sides) and sit around a communal table while an affable waiter (we had Jonny) cracks jokes and brings around slices of 'za and steaming spoonfuls of pasta - all different, all delicious - until you've maxed out the elastic on your fat pants and you roll out the door and aim yourself down the hill at your car. Brilliant. I'm coming back, and I'm bringing freaking everyone.
