I came across this pizzeria via google. Newtown is a hip area just around 20 mins from the CBD via the train. I went there initially to see what the buzz was about. The lines were just way too long. So I gave up but was curious enough to come back the next day. I stood in the line for 30 mins and finally got seated. Let me just say, it's well worth the trip and wait to eat at Gigi's! It's unique in that every item is vegan. You simply cannot go wrong with any pizza or calazone. They have specials which are pretty good as well. I've eaten in great pizza places all over the world. This definitely is right up there in terms of fantastic pizza, great atmosphere and just a fabulous location! read more

I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. It's that good. I'd recommend going right at 6 when they open, if possible, as they don't take reservations and the line to get in gets long (but it's worth the wait if you don't make it at 6). All of the pizzas are vegan and will blow your mind. I came here with my omni boyfriend and he said it's the best pizza he's ever had. They have a solid wine list, a good selection of beers, and the ambiance is great. The restaurant gets busy and sometimes it can be a tight fit between tables, but it's fun, delicious, and incredible. The lighting is a bit dark which makes it hard to take good food photos but very flattering on the face ;) I'd 10/10 recommend this place for a date. This was our third restaurant for the Sydney Pizza Festival, having previously gone to La Disfida in Haberfield and Ventuno in Millers Point. This would be third on my list, I wasn't impressed with their pizza at all. It is only one notch above from our local pizza shops. In fact, I would rather choose Secret Slice or even Crust over Gigi. Service wasn't too good either, there was a long wait before we got served. I understand it was a busy night but it seems they are always busy anyway so they should know how to cope up with the crowds. My experience at Gigi is never consistent. The first time was 'meh'. The second was 'hells yeah!' And the third, somewhere in between. I always get the same salad on the specials board of baby spinach, goat cheese, pine nuts and balsamic dressing. At times it can be good, but on others it is mind-blowing, earth-shattering good. I just wish it were the latter every single time. For pizza I have tried Margherita, Caprese, Napoli, Diavola and San Daniele, all pizzas varying each time I go back. I have also had the Canneloni on two separate occasions, and unfortunately like everything else, it was 'just ok' on the first but amazingly good on the second. The one thing that never changes and always manages to keep me smiling when I leave is the Chocolate Tart. Yes, please! The waiters, like the food, can also be inconsistent. I have had the same waiter several times and one week he may be overly happy but downright cold the next. What gives? If I were rating Gigi's on food quality alone, I'd be giving a perfect score, but unfortunately when you add quality of service to the mix I'm struggling to justify even a 2 out 5. I've been here multiple times in groups both small and large, and on each and every occasion there's been some type of problem with the staff. Aside from getting the order wrong more than once (as nothing gets written down) - the attitude and arrogance of the wait staff genuinely makes you feel like more of a nuisance than a paying customer. My personal favourite was when the manager (not knowing we could hear what he was saying) instructed the waitress serving us "tell them to go and get f*cked" when asking if we could make two equal payments*. Honourable mention goes out to the time I was snickered at for bumbling my way through the pronunciation of some items on their very Italian menu. 2 stars for consistency - consistently amazing food; and a consistently bottom of the barrel experience. *Disclaimer - I know splitting bills is time consuming, tedious, potentially more expensive, and even stated as a no-go on their website; but we were the second last table to pay for the night - spent $250 - and were asking for 2 equal payments, with a $5 tip for on each payment to cover any fees. I couldn't understand why this would have been a problem; and no explanation was offered except "It's policy". read more

Staff was rude and arrogant like nowhere in town. Will never go back. We arrived at Gigi, which was less then half-full and asked for a table for 4. The first staff member told us only the manager could allocate tables. We waited... and waited. After asking 2 other staff members, who told us the same thing, the manager finally came. He told us to wait by the bar, which was strange since restaurant was still less than half-full, and no tables were reserved. But we waited, when finally another waiter asked us to follow him, which we did. The waiter then took us... to the other side of the bar! We then told him we didn't want to stay at the bar, and we wanted to sit at a table while waiting for our two other friends. He said the table would be provided soon. Meanwhile, the restaurant was still half of its capacity or less, so plenty of tables available. And we waited. Standing. After not having been assigned to any tables we decided to look for somewhere else to eat. I approached the waiter and asked him to cancel our request, said we didn't need a table anymore, and also told him they needed to improve their service, since the restaurant had many tables available and we were being dragged from one corner to another, asked to wait, while half of all tables were still available and unreserved. To our surprise the obnoxious waiter raised his nose and arrogantly said: "That is how we work, if your friends are not here yet, we won't give you a table. Out method is fair, what your asking for is unfair." At this exact time, our friends arrived... and we left! Never to come back. I was honestly shocked by the level of arrogance and rudeness of that staff. And so Gigi lost 4 customers for good, and the restaurant was still mostly empty by the time we left. I wonder why.... We went to Gigi on a Tuesday night, fairly early I thought, but within an hour the place was packed with just one free table. I'd heard about Gigi, it has a great reputation in Newtown, but I was blown away by how busy it was mid week. Is the reputation deserved? Well, going by yesterday, hell yeah! We had three different pizzas; margherita, a spicy salami with olives and capsicum, and a cheese and mushroom. The bases were a little more doughy than I usual like, but they were cooked to perfection in a wood-fired pizza oven. The toppings were also amazing, especially the cheese and mushroom - something I'd never usually order, but glad we did this time around. We finished the meal with gelato. They make it on-site, so the range is limited but what they have is fresh, creamy, and incredibly good. The only downside was the service, which was a little patchy with one very attentive waiter and a second who seemed to be in a world of her own last night. The food and overall ambiance more than made up for it though, and we'll be back. read more

Was sort of left with a "meh" feeling about this place, perhaps because I'd heard it hyped so badly. I am something of a pizza connoisseur and had heard of this place spoken of very highly. As I live just up the street from it in Newtown, I thought I'd give it a shot for date night. We ordered some olive-based appetizer which was okay. The pizza names I can't recall - one had some artichokes, ham and olives, and the other had some mushrooms and garlic. They were both tasty, but not mind blowing. In addition - I do love a thin-crust pizza, but this was so thin that the toppings kind of soaked through and made the bottom soggy - not so easy to eat and not so appetizing. But overall the pizza still tasted good. Homemade desserts won me over and the boyfriend wound up trying the Ricotta cheesecake which he loved but I found a little bland, while I went for the chocolate tart with the vanilla ice-cream - very very yummy. But overall - meh. I don't know if I'd go back. I've had better pizza's in the city by far. read more

I've been to a lot of pizza joints in Sydney with many of them painting themselves as authentic Italian style pizza and none of them hold a candle to Gigi's. My friend and I ordered the Calamari Fritti and the 4 Formaggi and both dishes were great. The 4 Formaggi was the best four cheese pizza I've had in years. It is my current go to standard to rate pizza joints on. I think overall what I took away after eating the first slice was just how amazing the dough was. It's definitely not treated just as a food delivery system and is a quality gourmet item on its own. Service was friendly and not overbearing, food came out quick and delicious, quite a loud restaurant but that may be from the masses of people having mouthgasms. The pizza is yummy but can get soggy quickly (mostly an issue for take away). Staff were friendly and efficient and I was impressed at how quickly take away was ready on a Saturday night. I think it took me 10 minutes to get a pizza. Annoying that they have a $30 credit minimum. This place is so unique. The staff member leading me through the menu is clearly part owner or some other vested interest. He recognized my lack of love for beer non... Let's say 'local'. So he gravitated towards my clearly 'picky' side and my desire to be local and true to the origin... And he delivered. The pizza was epic... TRUE to the region and as he explained the mozz is local to Italy and is brought in twice a week! So... This is NOT a new local joint trying to be 'italian'. It IS italian. And it is hip... Unfortunately I have to say that I was disappointed. This place was billed by online reviews as some of the best pizza available in Sydney, and although my pizza ended up being quite nice (very good crust and sauce, basically perfect), I quickly realised what was wrong. The restaurant has recently gone vegan, meaning that any pizzas bought there not only have no meat, but also no cheese. We used to love going to this wood fired pizza place but after moving a suburb away we hadn't been here for awhile so were looking forward to it. Arrived to learn it is no longer BYO and is now vegan. Okay, still willing to stay but the doof doof music with thumping sub woofer was oppressively and unpleasantly loud. The staff loved it, singing and bopping along but I did not feel like shouting over my dinner. They wouldn't turn it down, we were made to feel unwelcome so we left and spent our money elsewhere. As a vegan, I was very excited to eat at an all vegan pizzeria. It was quite close to the Newtown train station, which made it very accessible to Sydney's cheap, clean public transit. I came on a Saturday night, and there was a line out the door (there is no room to wait inside). There were enthusiastic patrons that seemed to have endless praise for the place, so I was excited. Because we had to wait for a bit, and there was no way to get a drink while waiting, I got some sparkling water from the place next door. When we sat down, it was clear how loud the atmosphere was. I have never understood the point of loud background music when conversation itself is loud enough. I had not finished my sparkling water, so I had it on the table. Without a word, one of the waiters walked by and took it away. I noticed, and they gave it back, but said that I needed to keep it out of sight because it was branded, or from another place. This seemed really unreasonable, because we were full paying customers which were getting drinks and only got something else because we had to wait. It was also a simple, non-alcoholic beverage. We got a pizza and a calzone, which we thought was a pizza based on the menu. While the flavor was OK, the pizza was so soggy, and a bit thick. Maybe this was just not my style of pizza, but if you want crisp, thin pizza this is not your place! Dessert was quite good, and vegan dessert is rare. I had a little cannoli for $4.5 that was a good value, and the vanilla custard was very rich.
