I am a 58 year old woman. I have lifetime medical workers compensation. I was given 6 sessions of massage therapy with Dr. Hakim. I completed the 6 appointments, which consisted of him putting a heating pack on my back and leaving me in a room for about 20 minutes on a decompression table. Sometimes, he would use a massage gun, or do light pressure manual work for 5-10 minutes. At the end of my last visit, I was having extreme difficulty getting up from the table. I was laying face down and had to stiffen my body and pivot perpendicular to the table, then do a slow push up to get myself up and off. Rather than stepping in to give me a hand up. Dr. Hakim stood back watching me go through this process...He then remarks: "IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE DONG SOMETHING NASTY TO THE TABLE". While I thought this was wildly inappropriate, unprofessional and uncalled for, I was in pain and also - didn't really know how to deal with that. He had previously made comments about the color of my yoga pants while he was working on my backside. At the time, it didn't occur to me there might be an issue. I left thinking...well, I'm not coming back here. Not only because of this comment, but also because he seemed to be just "phoning in" his treatments...couldn't remember me from previous treatments....puts you in a room and leaves you with no face cradle so your face is sore when you leave...once, I showed up for an appointment and they sent me away - saying I didn't have one... Fast forward nearly a year later, I am referred back to Dr. Hakim. I was again approved for 6 treatments. Anyone who has been through Workers Compensation understands the bureaucracy. It is diffult to get approval in the first place, and then to switch providers is another hassle. I decided to let his previous comment pass and just receive some treatment...as it is better than none at all. I just left his office. My experience when I arrived for my appointment: Upon arrival I was greeted as "Ann" - which is not my name. When I explained who I was, I was asked if I had an appointment. Which I did. I was then told I did not have authorization for my visit and I could not be seen until that was straightened out. I explained I did indeed have authorization, as Dr. Hakims office had previously called saying they had 6 visits authorized and they'd like to get me booked. I told them I would have to get back to them. Weeks did pass, but ultimately I did book this appointment. Even though they booked this appointment a week prior, once again they seem to not know who I am, and are surprised by my arrival. I'm being told to sit and wait until they call my provider to get authorization. I told the receptionist that I don't understand how this was not worked out prior to my visit. After that I could hear her and Dr. Hakim whispering...and after 30 minutes of sitting there I was told they could see me as they had gained authorization. I'm brought into a room by Dr. Hakim. He proceeds to ask me where my pain is, then tells me to lay face down on the table. He puts a unheated heat pack on my back and leaves the room. 5 min or so later...just as it's beginning to heat up he comes in and pulls it off. He begins to use a massage gun. This gun is so weak, if he pushes too hard it turns off. So, he is giving light pressure mostly and zooming around...really just irritating... He tells me "if you feel any discomfort, let me know". I then lift my head to tell him "when you were working on the left, I felt a spasm on the right and it is hurting me right here" and I point to the area. I then say "can you put some pressure there to relieve it?" He then tells me "You're not having a spasm" to which I respond "Well, okay - I don't know if its a spasm, but it hurts"...the then tells me " JUST RELAX AND LET ME DO MY JOB" in a very defensive tone. Moments later he tells me to stand up. Then he starts telling me we need some consistency and so he needs me to come back in twice a week...I stop him as it seems he is concluding the visit...so I ask " is this visit over??" and then he just lays into me. Saying, "look, if your not happy with my services, I can refer you to another doctor".."I know you're put out because of the authorization issue which is not our fault" and now you're here telling me how to do my job. I asked him HOW is it I'm telling him to do his job. He ASKED me to tell him if he was causing discomfort and when I spoke up he told me to "RELAX, let me do my job". We went back and forth belaboring the point whether or not I was telling him how to do his job...ughhh..concluding with him telling me he doesn't want to see me again and he will refer me to another provider. I told him I can do the on my own. I regret giving him a second chance as it is clear that his practice is in disarray. I didn't get the feeling he cared at all about my pain or helping me..he's just there to get paid. Treatment time=12 min. read more

While on a short vacation in Monterey, I had severe back pain and Gilbert Hakim was gracious enough to take me as a walk-in appointment. His kind manner was greatly appreciated. With a quick and gentle assessment , he fixed me right up and I was able to enjoy the rest of my trip and also drive myself back to Flagstaff AZ ! I went to see Dr. Hakim three years ago. He was recommended to me by his brother who is a friend and former colleague of mine. It was the the first time I'd ever been to a chiropractor. It seemed simple enough. Go in, pay a copay, get your back aligned, neck cracked....etc. While I was seeing Dr. Hakim my wife was in a car accident. Her car was totaled when someone rear ended her. She had whip lash and missed work. Her doctor had her going to physical therapy etc. During one of my sessions with Dr. Hakim I mentioned my wife had been in an accident. He was insistent that my wife needed to see him right away. That he was trained in helping people recover from such injuries as he waived at his wall of diplomas and accreditations. Never having been in a serious car accident and never having dealt with whip lash my wife wanted to try anything and everything she could to give herself the best chance of a full recovery. So she went to see Dr Hakim. For whatever reason, he wouldn't allow her to use our insurance (which covered 20 chiropractic visits a year). He said, we'll just settle up when you get your settlement from the lawsuit. (The guy who hit my wife was negligent and he hit her going very fast so there was a lawsuit involved). This was the first red flag. Next he ordered my wife to get an MRI on her neck. Her GP didn't order this, nor did the physical therapist, but Dr. Hakim insisted upon it. Again, he said, don't pay, put it on the bill that goes toward the lawsuit. My wife and I have never been through something like this. We didn't know who to listen to. Dr. Hakim said he had been through this a number of times, that he goes to court to testify for people, to give expert testimony, etc. so we did what he said. After a few weeks my wife didn't feel the chiropractic visits were helping her so she stopped seeing Dr. Hakim and focused solely on physical therapy which she did three times a week for a few months. Thankfully she made a full recovery. She tried settling up with Dr. Hakim when she stopped seeing him. He wouldn't allow it. He wanted to be paid when the settlement was reached. How often do you offer to pay someone and they won't allow it? My wife and I were perplexed. After two and a half years the lawsuit was finally settled this month. My wife was paid $15,000 in damages. The lawyer took $3700 or so, and there was a $900 fee from Dr. Gilbert Hakim and a $700 fee for an MRI so my wife received less than $10,000 for her life being turned upside down for a six months. Had Dr. Hakim allowed us to run his fees through insurance they would have been totally covered (except for $150 in copays). Again, he wouldn't allow us to do this. I imagine this is because the negotiated rate he gets from an insurance company for an office visit is less than what he knew he'd get from our settlement. Our lawyer contacted the company who did the MRI. They reduced their bill from $2400 to $700 (again something that would have been largely covered had we been advised to go through our insurance rather than the settlement). When our lawyer contacted Dr. Hakim's office he discounted his original bill from $1000 to $900. That's $750 more than she would have paid had this gone through our insurance as it should have. We haven't lost sight of what's important here: My wife is healthy again... We're glad this ordeal is over but needless to say, neither of us will be having our backs adjusted anytime soon! read more

Dr Hakim is by far the best chiropractor I've ever been to. In 2001 I was in an auto accident that really messed me up, should have killed me. Dislocated my pelvis, concussion, severe whiplash. Over a period of 2 years I saw the best doctors at USC, UCLA, Cedars Sinai, Tower Urology, Methodist in Dallas, Presbyterian in Dallas, Medical City, the Mavericks orthopedic and the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. No one could help me. The best they could do was offer me Detrol and Flomax. I was 38 and in bad shape. I went to Dr Hakim. over a few months he was able to work out my whiplash and other issues. today I am mostly pain-free. My whiplash is gone (most docs say you cant fix that) and i walk without a limp most of the time. I see there's a review from "La B" that is very negative. I am not sure why this review is even allowed to be up there bc he is reviewing his wife's experience, not his own, so I want to address that. I complained to Yelp about this review bc it's not fair. What if this guy's wife had a crush on Dr Hakim, so this guy wants to ruin Dr Hakim's career? I say this bc his review doesn't make sense. FIRST he says Dr Hakim would not bill his health insurance which covers 20 chiro visits. The answer is easy. When you go to fill out a claim, you will check the "auto accident" box. Then your health insurance will tell you that you must first file with the medical part of your auto insurance bc then health insurance becomes secondary. SECOND..even if their auto insurance didn't cover health and they waited until all of the treatments were finished, they can still submit the claim to health insurance and get paid and will still only be out the co-payments!! So his claims of being out of $900 are baseless. He would get that back from either auto health insurance or medical health insurance. This guy obviously has a personal vendetta against Dr Hakim. read more

I started seeing Dr Hakim in 2009 for unexplained neck pain and hip soreness. I had never been to a chiropractor so I was not sure what to expect. He came very highly recommended by a mutual friend. After his initial evaluation and due to my age and gender and past medical history, he recommended a series of x-rays to properly assess my heath issues before he started to treat me, and was able to determine what the underlying cause of my aches and pains was. When the results of the x-rays came back, he took his time and explained them to me, step-by-step, pointing out the areas of concern and all of my treatment options, and corrected them. I was very happy! Even though he moved away , I still have phone consultations with him and send him x-rays and other medical test results for him to review. I trust him implicitly. Most recently It was suggested that I might have bone cancer after reviewing current x-rays by my GP. He suggested an MRI and a bone biopsy. I sent my x-rays to Dr. Hakim for a second opinion. Immediately upon reviewing my films, he called me with the good news that it was not a bone malignancy and nothing more than just a bony shadow on the film. Sure enough,after the MRI, the radiologist confirmed Dr. Hakim's diagnosis. Not only did Dr. Hakim NOT charge me, but he saved me the huge expense of an unneeded bone biopsy and painful experience. I've been going to chiropractors my whole adult life since a bad injury and long intense hours at a computer and I've seldom been fortunate enough to have a someone like Doctor Hakim near by to keep me in shape. Dr. Hakim is *effective* yet *gentle*. My experience is that it's easy to find gentle OR effective but difficult to find both in the same doctor. I leave his office each time feeling 20 years younger and pain-free. read more

After the birth of my first child, I had issues with pelvic separation that made it difficult for the first 9 weeks of my son's life. I saw multiple specialists and who's best advice was to take pain medication and wear a girdle. After one adjustment with Gilbert, the issue was completely remedied and never returned. I continued to see Gilbert regularly for years, including through out my second pregnancy and I was thrilled to have a very comfortable pregnancy and successful issue-free delivery. Gilbert personifies the ideal bedside manner. He is open, caring, communicative and has a very precise and gentle touch when adjusting. I used to have back problems! That is, until I started seen Dr. Hakim. I did see him regularly for a few years, after being recommended when I was flattened by pain for a second time in my life and I could barely walk. I had never been to a chiropractor before but had been to Cedars Sinai for terrible back pain in the past and had an MRI, which DR. Gilbert asked to look at. Cedars had prescribed Naproxen and other things, but I didn't care to take drugs for something that I felt was caused by low exercise and a particularly high-stress situation I had endured. Dr. Gilbert seemed to agree. On this second attack of pain I saw him instead of returning to Cedars and his adjustments were terrific, but along with this, he suggested simple exercises and habits to do that appeared to get me to a place where I have little back pain at all anymore. He really has an intuitive sense of how to heal. Highly recommended. read more
