The wooden bridge over into the garden was cool though and I feel like it will look 90% better in the spring.

It has also attracted some rough people in recent times, resulting in a shooting. That's not the park's fault though. It has felt mostly safe to me and Parks & Rec does a great job keeping it clean and well-maintained.

As for the kids play area, it is a lot smaller than it appeared to be on the advertisement. There is a spiderweb like play gym, and a spin-o-wheel. Theres another area with a higher climbing gym and 1 slide. This area has swings but not many, and only 1 or 2 for small toddlers. Another area is almost entirely rock climbing (for little kids). There is a large soccer field next to the playground, a basketball and tennis court, and a skateboard area that was all older adults (who were using adult language and seemed to be imbibing in marijuana products). I won't be bringing my child back to this park. It is out of the way for my family, although I can see this is a nice thing to have if you happen to live in the neighborhood.

There was a group of young men at their cars drinking beer and smoking pot openly in front of the park. They weren't hassling anyone, but not what I'd want my kids to be smelling. There were some other questionable adults at the park. Some doges were present both on and off leash. The playground equipment was in decent shape with no obvious safety issues. We were the only ones playing on the playground which felt strange because it was such a beautiful day.

The park is designed to be very family friendly, it's a beautiful urban plaza. Gateway Discovery Park is a 3.2-acre park for the community to play, celebrate, meet, and discover! There's a large plaza, lawn, porch, skate dot, accessible play area, outdoor fitness equipment, and a picnic area. It's a great place to meet your neighbors, hold your community event, or to enjoy a picnic! The park will have year-round programming and staff on site, there's even a Portland Loo! Tip: There's not a lot of shade, so be ready for sun, if it's sunny!

Being at this park, it gave me the free will and desire to walk here from the Northeast Portland Airbnb that I was staying at; the walk itself was 23 minutes, and it was a lovely walk seeing all of the beautiful houses with their lack of lawns for front yard greenspace. Once I got to the park, I didn't realize how huge it was. I indeed got a lot of steps in around the path of gravel, bark, and sometimes concrete. I liked that they had a designated dog park area and also an area for children to play. Since I was solo on my trip, I stuck solely to the trail. I enjoyed myself around the trail; not a nature trail per se, but it was surrounded by very tall trees and crisp, clean, non-humid air. I came in the early morning, so the park wasn't crowded, but I appreciated the shade, allowing myself not to become too overheated or overly sweaty. I completed 5 laps around the path before taking public transit into Downtown Portland. During my mindfulness walk, I saw squirrels, listened to the sweet sounds of birds, and enjoyed the sights of well-maintained houses. People on the path gave off subtle friendliness, not in an overly southern way. Being immersed in my surname park, I knew I was at the right place at the right time because I felt at peace, experiencing tranquility, and very safe. Thinking about this park, I can't wait to return.

It's not a large park per se, but it more than does the job for people looking for a little air and a place to get some of that beautiful Pacific NW air. On good weather days, this is a really ideal spot to relax and go about life in the most leisurely way. I've seen all sorts of activities here: folks taking small walks with dogs, kids indulging in the playground, people hitting balls in the baseball field, older people practicing tai chi, folks laying out on the big lawn, and folks meditating in the perfectly dry Oregon sun. It's a versatile spot, perfect for neighborhood folks who want to get out of the house without having to hike it up. As noted earlier, good weather for me is key. Oregon is already gloomy and wet for most of the year, but when the skies are blue, the weather is cooperating, and there wasn't too much rain from the night before, then Wilshire Park is an easy destination for folks who live in this part of PDX.
