Great people and good service with the best meat in town. I love it all but their chicken salad is the best ever.

Very clean. I call ahead so that my large order of burger is freezer wrapped and ready in individual one pound packages. As I don't purchase quantities of other meat, I then select whatever appeals to me at the time of purchase. There is definitely a difference in quality and taste rather than the grocery. read more

The meat was frozen and old. Did not eat the food had to put in trash. The fresh meat was great that was not frozen.

I'd been hearing about this out of the way spot for a while, and it's not far from where I work, so finally decided look in and see what they have. Small grocery with few surprises (try their own "secret recipe" meat rub!!) but the MEAT is king here!! I'm no expert, but anyone can tell you're getting better, fresher cuts in a place like this than your standard supermarket. Mr. M&P approved thick cut sirloin steaks, NY strip, a real carnivore's delight!! They'll answer all your questions, cut it just the way you like it, and even (if you so choose) offer you more obscure choices like rabbit (poor bunny), tails (!), maws, etc... They take special orders for parties, sell big $50 boxes of assorted meats (no substitutions) and even sell potato and macaroni salads and deli-sliced cheeses and meats for party platters. This place does not deserve three stars. Ignore the troll review that's dragging down the score. If there's a better option for fresh meat and poultry in Springfield I'd like to see it. The products from the butcher counter are so much better than the grocery store. I buy all my fresh meat here. They also have deli products and lots of interesting smoked items, bacon, and fresh made sausages. There aren't enough places like Gill's in the world. Five stars. read more

I've been a customer of Gill's since I moved to Springfield back in 1999. Part of it's nostalgia -- I grew up in the Bronx in the '60s and Gill's is very much reminiscent of the old neighborhood butcher shop on East 137th, minus the sawdust on the floor. The fact that this family-owned and operated business remains when so many others locally have failed is a testimony to their success and commitment to quality. Gill's is my "go-to" place for holidays, on occasions when the family gathers here, or whenever I want to impress my friends. I buy the mixed boxes for the grilling season. Nice variety for grilling and smoking at a very decent price. We order our Thanksgiving turkey every November 1 and pick it up the Tuesday before. A fresh Bowman-Landes or Cook's trumps a frozen supermarket Butterball every time. Threw a dinner party for a few close friends 3 years ago, and to this very day, on those rare occasions when I see them, I'll hear "Remember that time you made those sirloin beef tips...?" They're still talking about 'em! Also, try finding sirloin beef tips at Krogers or Wal-Mart. My wife swears by their pepper bacon. Last Christmas, we feasted upon a mighty fine beef tenderloin from Gill's, and the next time I'm across town, I'm hitting him up for a nice brisket. There are times when only meat from Gill's will do. We used to live a few blocks away from Gill's, but we moved a few years ago, so we don't visit near as frequently. But whenever we do, it's as though we'd never left the old neighborhood. No matter how busy they are, I'm still greeted cordially by the owner and staff each time. By far, the best and freshest meat in town, and attentive staff, ability to accommodate special orders and reasonable prices for the high quality of the merchandise. I am from Urbana, OH was visiting that area. I saw this meat shop, stopped went in to see what they had to offer. Various meats displayed in glass cases. Looked good. Was waiting in a small line and then I saw what made me leave without purchasing. A young man handling a customer's order with his non gloved hands. Chicken then steak. Sad to see that since I was taught proper handling of chicken to not cross-contaminate. Keep raw meat, poultry, fish, and their juices away from other foods. Not here this day. read more

I'm an unrepentant carnivore and a meat snob to boot. I was really disappointed with the meat offerings in Springfield until I found Gil's. Nothing fancy here but the staff is wonderful and will trim cuts to your liking. He has prime beef and his cube steaks, steaks are fork tender and have lots of flavor. But it his brisket that my family adores- tender, juicy . I buy my ground chuck in 2lb packs- freshly ground and no prepackaing here- although he does have a freezer case. Two drawbacks- no veal and no beef backribs, but with meat this good- not complaining. Try Gil's. read more
