This place is bare bones and small. Don't expect a lot for your money. The room barely fits a a queen bed. There is no TV, closet, dresser. There is a private bathroom. The room gets hot, I called down to ask for a fan. They have none. The window was wide open but had to keep the door open for cross breeze. (I am not sleeping with the door open) There is a bar next door which gets loud. There are no black out shades for 20hrs of sure light light. Bring some eye masks. Sound travels really well outside and in your window. You can hear people whisper outside. But cars driving by sound extra loud and will wake you up at night. Staff seems friendly. Check in was very easy just a confirmation and swipe of credit card. This place is pricey in the summer time. Which is understandable; but breakfast is included. Which helps digest the higher cost. Breakfast options: Eggs (any way) Wheat or white toast Meat: bacon, sausage, reindeer sausage. This place is special as it's only open 3 months out of the year with lots of history. This building was formerly a morgue and a brothel. The owner is very friendly. This is a very solid option to stop by and get some sleep (if you are not a light sleeper) and move on the road. read more

Food is very meh... The three stars are for the service and mining memorabilia decorating the lobby. Everyone got something of everything from the menu and each plate came out at a different time and was lukewarm and tasteless. Like even the toast. How??? I got the snow crab cake bene and all I could taste was breadcrumbs. I thought maybe it's because it's in a small town, out of the way, but fishing season was starting so you'd think this place would have had it down by now. Wake up! Winter's over. Oh well. I'd been here last time I was through and it wasn't very memorable so next time I will try someplace new. Would pass up next time. read more

Food was great and interior is charming. It's a little on the pricey side but not bad for the area and for the quality of food. The fettuccine Alfredo with salmon was delicious and filling, perfect after a backpacking trip. The hotel accommodation is also quaint and quiet. Rooms are well lit and clean, with a good amount of space in the room and friendly service. Location and distance outside Wrangell St. Elias National Park makes it a perfect stopping point for long drives to or from the park. read more

Mmm, just what you need after a long drive, whether coming from McCarthy, Anchorage, or beyond. The food here was fantastic as we made a pit stop on our way to McCarthy. Sitting at the corner of the two "main" streets passing through Chitina, the hotel/restaurant is probably in the best location for people passing through the small town to stop in for a bit to eat. Flush with history, you can flip through their photo albums or look at the pictures posted along the walls of the restaurant as you wait for your food. The restaurant is known for their delicious french fries, so we made a point to order food that came with a side of fries. In fact, on the way back through Chitina, we stopped and got a side of fries to eat with our PB&Js! The service here was typical of your small town eatery - warm and friendly, but not excessively accommodating (which is a good thing in my book!). The waitress kept all drinks filled but was not annoying with frequent requests to see how we were doing. No complaints at all about the food or service here - would definitely stop in again! read more

Obviously pricey... because you are in the middle of nowhere... but they really make it work and you don't feel bad for spending your money. The salads accompanying our meals were top-notch. Fresh, abundant, and more than iceberg lettuce with a casual tomato. Nicely done! A lot of sandwiches ordered by our table, not surprising when even those are priced $15-$17 per person, but there were no complaints for what we received, except a few of us who were too full to finish. Not a bad problem. One person got the cod and pasta named after the Wrangell-St Elias range. Not enough good could be said about that plate. Yum!! The service was slow, especially for an empty restaurant, however... we arrived fairly late for dinner (maybe 8:30) and although we had a wait for our food, it all arrived HOT. Nice! Worth the wait. :) I have to mention... as the one person that got fries instead of a salad, those fries were delish... crispy and fresh! Would definitely return. Thanks! read more

3 Star for Alaska, 2 star compared to lower 48. Gilpatricks is your best bet for food in Chitina as the town is quite small. It seems like its the popular spot for local fishermen and tourists alike. I would recommend staying away from their fish dishes as they are expensive and just a simple filet on the plate. Not much in the way of sides or flavor with the seafood. The Yak burger looked quite tasty but unfortunately they were out when I tried to order it. read more

Solid food, reasonably priced. We were quite surprised to find a good size menu with prices similar to what we'd pay at home in Fairbanks. The food was hot and tasty. We had burgers and fries, the hamburger steak meal, and the philly cheese steak. The cheese steak was so-so. Friendly server, charming interior with small bar and hardwood floors. read more

I like Gilpatrick's but when I order Chef's Choice steak dinner and it comes out too tough to eat, that's not good business. $32 for a tough New York steak, no consideration for the fact I only ate 1/4 of it. C'mon people, if you screw up an order, own up and do the right thing. On the other hand the fries were excellent. read more

Yak burger was very tasty, locally grown. Salmon cakes were also very good. Bread pudding was outstanding.
