I had every reason to not stop in Kirles Jewelers. I'd always been kind of curious about Kirles, but I'd never really had the chance to stop in. Since I was in this strip center for a couple other businesses, I opted to wheel by Kirles. Then, I started to wheel away. Then, Shirley came to the door and asked if I wanted to come in. I hesitated, but she assured me she didn't care how I was dressed. For those of you who've heard my story about wheeling through Saks Fifth Avenue prepared to spend quite a bit only to be completely ignored because of how I was dressed, you'll know that this really piqued my interest. So, I went in. Now then, have you ever gone to a business and instantly thought to yourself "I really like this place?" That's what happened here. I really liked this place. First off, Shirley is a delight. She's warm and welcoming. She's helpful without being high pressure. I'm not sure I had any intent to buy anything to do, though I very nearly did so (amazing candles). I was drawn to the fact that there are a number of photos around the store related to racing and a corner exhibit related to the Vukovich family. Of course, I asked. Kirles is in its third generation in the same family - the current owner's father is passionate about the Indy 500 and some of the photos are his and others are simply photos he acquired. It's an amazing touch with great photos. I met that current owner. She enthusiastically introduced herself and told the story of her father. I shared my own 500 story - when I was eight, I wasn't expected to live long and got a "wish" - not so much in the contemporary meaning as that organization didn't exist yet, but in the same concept. My wish involved meeting Mario Andretti - and I did. I still consider it a life highlight (though I always wonder if I should feel guilty because I actually survived). Anyway, Kirles offers jewelry, watches, candles, jewelry repair, custom jewelry design, Waterford crystal, appraisals, watch repair, and a variety of other items. It's a really cool, really welcoming, and pretty awesome store that has been in its current location for 45 years and has existed since 1951. And yes, it's locally owned and there's still only one location (which I actually find kind of refreshing). Kirles is wonderfully accessible (though I'll admit I was being super careful in my wheelchair). They even have an accessibility statement on their website. What can I say? I instantly fell in love with the place. The people were so friendly and helpful. The atmosphere feels like a place where you can "belong." Amidst the finer nature of the jewelry and such, there's a tremendous heart both in the types of items and in those delightful photos. While I didn't buy anything this time, I'd be stunned if I don't return to get a candle and maybe even more. While I'm not much for jewelry, this was just such a cool place that I saw several things where I thought "Hm. Maybe." So yeah, I can't say enough about getting that sense of welcome even on a day when I was super tired and looking rather ratty. Bravo, Kirles. I'll be back.

It's smaller than I expected, but they do have an excellent selection of estate pieces, in addition to more modern items. I'm not sure how they're usually set up as they were doing a trunk show, but they kindly got out the estate jewelry that had been put away and let me look at all of it. If you're looking for something in particular, ask - owner Brian had a couple of pieces on his desk and brought them out too. Pricing is reasonable with a few real bargains. If you ask they'll show you the display in the back office where there is an astonishing two vitrines full of amazing pieces the owner loved too much to sell. Very much worth a stop.

I don't shop for jewelry often, but the stores I've been to, usually have an army of sales people…read morewho want you to buy something (pushy) or nobody to help you at all. But I had a completely different and enjoyable experience while stopping by early on a Saturday morning. I received my wedding ring 38 years ago and even more pounds ago. So, even my fingers have gained girth over the years. So much so that the last time I took my ring off was 2004. Even without an appointment, I walked in and was greeted. I told him I needed to have my wedding ring re-sized and would need to have it cut off since there was no way I could slide it up and over the knuckle without causing grievous pain to me. The shop owner pulled out a handy tool and with my help, he slid his cutting tool under my ring without any problem and cut through the bottom of the band. Note that he asked if there was any engraving he needed to be aware of BEFORE cutting. This guy is a professional jeweler and in just a few minutes, my ring was off. He patiently explained that because my ring had been in place for so long, I had a flat part of my finger that would eventually flesh out without the ring on it. And the area near it was fleshy right now until it eventually moved down into the flatter area. He let me know this would take two or three months to even out. If he would have taken the measurement for how much to enlarge my ring today, it would be too small if measured on the flat spot and too big on the fleshy part and would be likely to fall off. So, even though I would have liked to have had the finished ring today, it wasn't in my best interest if I wanted the jeweler to size my ring correctly. So, he charged me for the cutting today and told me to come back when the finger was more normal shaped in a couple months so that he could get a proper sizing. Unfortunately, he couldn't give me an estimate without knowing how much gold it would take to put the ring back together at the proper size. Although it will be weird not having my ring on for a couple months, I appreciate the honesty and pride in workmanship the owner had. While he dealt with my ring removal, he encouraged my wife to browse the cases and answered some of her questions while he worked. He mentioned that they get really busy around all the holidays, so wait times can be somewhat longer, so shop when it isn't a holiday season if you want faster service/turnaround time.
