However, in choosing a place to overnight on my way home from Quadra Island, BC, I found Beacon Inn. It is a lovely, Edwardian style inn built in 2000 with modern finishes. It is the area's only Canada Select 5-Star accommodation. The Victoria BC airport is actually in Sidney, up the peninsula, which is a very pretty small town on the sea. Communication ~ all done via email, perfect and timely Rate ~ fair for my choice of room (third floor, no elevator) @ $166 with all taxes Location ~ just outside the commercial area of Sidney and it is easy to find Service ~ they offer an evening sherry in the lobby along with tea and coffee station, lemon water and snacks in the dining room. There is a binder of menus in the lobby. Room ~ stunning in decor: a high bed, flat screen TV, free Wifi, electric FP, windows that open for a breeze, portable air exchanger and a large bath with spa soaking tub, glass shower and full array of Nourish bath products. (see photo) Food ~ I am certain that their "gourmet" breakfast was just that, but my flight to Seattle left at 9 am and I had to return a rental car. They offer two seatings - 8:00 am and 9:15 am - neither of which I could enjoy given my schedule. I was pleased to take their Grab N Go from the fridge, described as "scrumptious." But it consisted of only a Red Delicious apple, a tiny piece of cheddar cheese, a chocolate candy, a tiny raisin muffin and a juice box. I was disappointed since part of the price of a room includes breakfast and this was less than comparable. The kitchen did not even offer a styro or other take-away cup for coffee. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I would highly recommend this inn if you are staying near the airport or visiting Victoria, just 30 minutes away. There are a few tourist sites within an easy drive of Sidney as well.

It was delicious and beautiful. A lot of love and effort is put into this. Sylvia's scones are phenomenal. If she opened up a bakery I would buy all her scones and loaves. The bathroom is a nice size with a big tub. So why the three stars? There is a radiator in the room but ours didn't work well and would heat up and did not stay hot. We were cold. If you are on the first floor please note that sound travels. you can really hear any movement above you and you can hear conversations very well outside your room which didn't make me feel particularly comfortable since I'm sure even just is talking normally can be heard by others as well. Didn't feel amazing from a privacy perspective. When you book it says there is daily housekeeping. There's no daily housekeeping. We were asked if anything was missing from our room by the breakfast server but nothing else. If you're expecting your trash to be emptied or bed to be made that did not happen our whole stay. Location: not really walkable to the downtown area or most things in Victoria. A couple other small things that I wouldn't even mention if the above two were no issue: The bed was okay although not super comfortable in my opinion. The outlets are really inconvenient and there aren't many. They mention there is tea, hot chocolate, and coffee. There's no hot chocolate and no creamer in your room if you want some later. I do think this place could be good for others but it was not the right fit for us. For a bed and breakfast the room just wasn't super comfortable for us to want to spend time there.

Sylvia is a gracious experienced host with great recommendations for dinner spots. We tried both Pennyfarthing and Pagliacci and were happy with the both choices. Pagliacci had a good live band. And to top it off a small herd of deer have made the neighborhood their home. It all added up to a great stay. We'll book Fairholme again for sure.

David and Paulanne provided every assistance possible. Breakfasts were varied and scrumptious in a dining room looking over the street. Our main dietary needs were no pig or cow and they met this challenge head-on without difficulty. One day we even had homemade chicken sausage. It was so delicate and delicious! On the day that we were planning on going to some local gardens for Saturday night fireworks she kindly and without asking provided a blanket to sit and watch them on. If you stay more than three nights they provides discounts for local attractions. They always made sure that we had directions if needed to go where we wanted to go. And, they also provided suggestions when asked. The accommodations were clean and very beautiful in an older home with appropriate furniture. In the evenings sherry and cookies are available with a community family room to visit in. The home itself is just a short walk to the seawall where a nice walk can be had before or after breakfast. It is centrally located between Beacon Hill Park and downtown Victoria. The only noise that you hear in the morning is that of the regular traffic in your own home if you live in suburbia.

I felt so silly for assuming such a nice hotel would judge. They didn't judge one bit. I have to mention that Megan who was at the front desk at the early morning hours while I was wide awake was my favorite human ever. And since then, whenever I've visited Victoria, it's been impossible NOT to pass this gorgeous hotel by, as it sits on a huge chunk of prime real estate, on Government Street, overlooking the inner harbor and across the street (kitty corner) from the majestic Parliament Building. And the hotel itself is quite majestic, reminiscent of a castle, really. I think it is one of the most famous and most beautiful hotels in all of Canada. The hotel is known for its high tea service on the weekends, and for its posh hospitality and service. Of course, one must expect to pay top dollar for all this, plus this prime location, but to many, it is worth it. I recently returned to this hotel for a wedding and boy, I was impressed. The ceremony was held on the south lawn and it was gorgeous. What a fabulous venue, with a view of the harbor and the Parliament Building, with all the flowers and chairs on the impeccable green grass, surrounded by all the well-kept bushes and trees, with the stunning hotel as our backdrop. After we were all ushered through the gorgeous main floor and by the stunning lobby to a ballroom for cocktails and dinner. The room was large enough to accommodate all the tables for us diners as well as a large dance floor, plus room for the live musicians and the dj too. Yet despite the open and spacious configuration of the space, it felt intimate, thanks to the lighting and lay-out of tables. And the hotel staff were unbelievable. Seriously, if you plan on hosting an important and/or formal event in Victoria, you should definitely consider this venue. There is not one aspect of the event or evening I could find fault with. I thought the washrooms were beautiful. I loved the high end shops on the main floor (bummer that they were closed when I was there. I would have loved to check out some of the kick-ass purses and clutches on display in the windows). I loved the hotel lobby with the stunning organic mesh art installation suspended from the ceiling. I loved the genteel wood-paneled, gentlemen's club-like lounge....I really loved it all.

Didn't like the gin & yuzu cocktail (too strong and lacked flavor) or the leechy cocktail (too sweet and heavily syrupy). It was a pity that I tried two out of five signature cocktails, and wasn't happy with any of them and they were pricey.

We arrived at 6pm only to find a note on the door that check in was from 3:30pm to 5:30pm but they would be back at 8pm. When the reservation was made, check in time was never mentioned and on their website it said "check in is at 1500". The suite itself was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was fine. Nothing special but was very filling. The only complaint I have is the management team hovered while we were eating breakfast. I would have given them four stars if the manager would have been apologetic for making us wait to check in. Would I stay there again? Probably not.
