It can get very busy at weekends so if you're eating you may want to book ahead to avoid a wait but having said that a drink at the bar pre-dinner isn't a bad thing. The food is always good and the portion sizes are generous, I definitely know I've been fed when I walk out. Never been letdown by the service, always friendly and efficient. The restaurant itself is pretty big with plenty of seats so big groups are easily accommodated. There is a seperate bar area in the middle if you're not eating, but you can always get something from the bar snack menu if you get peckish. No doubt I'll be back again soon.

The restaurant is clean, modern and certainly has life in it, but not in the traditional Italian sense. The kitchen is on full display and the hussle and bustle of the chefs cooking and waitresses delivering food adds to the ambiance. Shame there is no stone oven to cook the pizzas, rather some stainless steel equivalent. Then menu has a reasonable selection of starters, main's, pizzas etc. Wine list is small and simple with nothing that is really stunning. Its cheap plonk marked up in my view. Bottle of Lanson Champagne was approx £30. Chardonnay was approx £15-£18. So I went for the calamari for starters and lasagne for main. So the calamari was not great, very scrappy pieces deep fried. The lasagne again was nothing to write home about. Wife had a chicken, cream pasta dish which she loved.

The place was filthy, litter all over the floors, paper, bits of food, the table was sticky, and the room cold and drafty (due I suspect to over powered air-conditioning). They didn't have the beers they advertised in their menu. I ordered Salmon with broccoli, the salmon was okay if small, and the broccoli looked like three tiny pieces of limp grass. My wife ordered the same but without sauce and when I said I'd have her sauce, I though the waiter was going to have heart attack!! The place came across like a worn out service stop on the M4. Also, we got some sweet potato fries and they were the crispiest, best seasoned sweet potato fries I've ever tasted. The only note I can make against the experience is that the burger, whilst not overcooked in the bun with the relishes etc, the meat was cooked through and would have been perfect had it been a little pinker in the middle. An interesting feature is the large blackboard on the wall indicating via colored dots what is at the peak of its taste and freshness (meat/fish/fowl) according to the season. There is a lot to see here, including pet-owners bringing their dogs to this pup-friendly pub (note: there is a container of dog biscuits at the ready). It seems like this pub also has an international following, as at one point I heard a group of tourists speaking English (but not quite) at a neighboring table. I later found out that they were visiting from Canada. Surprisingly for a pub, the wine list is comprehensive, even rivaling that of some restaurants. As happy hour was quickly morphing into the dinner hour, we decided to take a look at the menu. I appreciated that the offerings were accessible and local/seasonal in nature as it is often tricky navigating a menu in an unfamiliar country. After some deliberation, I decided on the dover sole (excellent and very moist with the bone still in) and my Aunt had the roast with seasonal vegetables. This was a leisurely meal, with none of the rushed feeling or hovering that often evidences itself in dining establishments. I wish that I could magically transport The Taverners to a corner near me so that it could become a new favorite watering hole, especially as the cold winter months approach. For now, I will just have to content myself with filing it away as a quality eating and drinking option for the next time I am in England.
