They do awesome helping folks figure out what you need in regards to vests and basic needs to go with that. There usually is a council employee whose main office is located at the southlake office, but most are in Ft Worth ... at least for this area. Though honestly, with reflecting on our time with scouts we've only stuck with it for the last couple of years because they had stuck with it as long as they did. We really should have left at the time my oldest was in kindergarten... or around covid when they were ending their middle school time frame after they got their Bronze and Silver awards. With scout's there's too much difference in experience based on where you happen to live and which troop, service unit or council you land in. We know folks who have amazing experiences, then there's areas like ours where you can tell everyone is overworked for volunteer positions. The council is having staffing issues, because they seem to have one person take on multiple jobs. Numbers in scouts is down now that there are plenty of other options/competition. Some of the ever changing Rules that seems to change depending on whom you talk too, cost of trainings that may or may not transfer with you to a different council so you may have to pay to do them again, rewards vary from council to council. Like we knew a military mom that training had transferred to every other council they had lived in but this one wanted her to do them again. (At her cost.) At one point Boy Scouts offered to let a service unit use their rock climbing wall for free to help recruit, and folks offered to draft liability wavers but this council refused due to liability risks/insurance. (But boys could do it all ages in Boy Scouts and still have insurance, and now girls can go do it thru them instead!) Rewards for cookies are high when compared to other councils; so there seems to be extremes of kids working every weekend to sell 500+ cookies for a stuffed animal & a couple days of camp where the same amount of cookies would get you all of the physical goodies in a council right next door, and they have a different set up for earning camps. There are great staff members we've known over the years. Though they all seem to get burned out and leave. The few I've known longest seem at the point that they've been with it to the point they don't want to change companies for work having been at a non profit for so long. Honestly we're looking forward to hanging up our kids vest with their last year coming up.

I recently came to House of Shine to attend a junk journaling class. The environment was friendly,…read moreinviting and the space was beautiful. Before the class starts, one of the staff will discuss the vision behind House of Shine and ways to get involved. They have a yearly rotating exhibit with interactive activities throughout the space. Amanda the founder of DFW Junk Journaling Club was our instructor. Amanda provided information on junk journaling, showed examples through her own journals, provided supplies and answered any questions we had. The journaling classes are low cost ($10) and they have ample parking available on site. We were encouraged to bring our own supplies for junk journaling which includes receipts, stickers, pictures, cards etc. The class was casual and you could come and go as you pleased. There are meetups throughout the year for those interested in junk journaling discussed on their Instagram page or on linktree. I left the class inspired and look forward to expanding my creativity through journaling. I look forward to attending another journaling class in May.

We attended NTLC for about a year and a half after coming from another daycare where we had a…read morereally difficult experience. When we first started, my son was 3 years old, and we truly loved his teacher. He adjusted well, was happy, and we felt like we had found a good fit for our family. Things started to change when he turned 4 and moved into the Pre-K classroom. During his time in that class, there were 3-4 teacher changes, and the lack of consistency was very difficult for him. We started seeing more behavioral struggles and tried to work with the school to figure out how we could support him together. Unfortunately, we often felt like communication was lacking, and we weren't getting a clear picture of what was happening during his days there. By the time we were made aware of the full extent of the issues, his behaviors had escalated to things like hitting, biting, and trying to leave the school. Even then, we felt the severity of what was happening was not fully communicated. A few months before they decided to unenroll him, we started receiving more details about what had been happening. These were things we felt should have been documented and communicated on the days they occurred, rather than being shared months later. We provided multiple plans and suggestions and truly tried to partner with the school. However, it often felt like our ideas were dismissed with a "we can't do that," or they would try something once or twice and decide it wasn't working. There was no consistent approach, and we never felt like everyone was working toward the same goal. This experience was disappointing because we genuinely wanted to work together to help our son succeed. Unfortunately, I would not recommend NTLC for children who are strong-willed, struggle with transitions, or need additional behavioral support. If your child does not fit the expectations outlined in their handbook, it felt like the staff struggled to determine how to best support them. While there were staff members we appreciated, our overall experience was that the communication and support from administration were not what we needed during a challenging time. We also found that questions and feedback were often met with defensiveness rather than an open conversation focused on finding solutions.

We even recommended them to several of our friends. NLTC made becoming parents so much smoother. We learned so much from the staff and how wonderfully they run their program. We moved out of state and leaving them was the hardest part. A special shout out to all of the girls on the management team (Chloe, Taylan, Akhia, Liz and Karina) and our favorite teachers Miss Ashley, Miss Blayne, Mr. Francisco, Mr. Spencer and Miss Quinn.
