Attending a Friday night mixer to view what's offered and explore the various pieces. Fred was very inviting and made sure to keep all guests were well accommodated. There was finger food and champagne served throughout the night. Upon entering you notice the great open format setting that is well lite with music and a lively scene of people interacting. You can venture upstairs to discover rooms filled with various works from different artists from all over Africa. This was truly a great experience and one that I will def revisit. In the end I purchased a giraffe figurine. read more

What a great experience! My friend and I found this hidden gem while leaving the Fine Arts Museum to get Gelato. The energy, creativity and ambiance in the Gite Gallery is one of a kind. I truly enjoyed the tour, and even made a purchase to start my art piece collection! I encourage everyone to visit! I truly hate to do this, but I am beyond disappointed with Lloyd Gite. I guess I had him all wrong- I had no idea he could be so unprofessional. He will not be receiving any of my business in the future. Back-Story on how we got here... So there I was, Stacey Wells and I just closed on our new home (July). Stacey decided to take 7 day vacation to Alaska the day after we closed and I stayed back to move us in. I stopped by the Gite Gallery to look a few piece of art. He offered to walk through the home to see what pieces would work where. I invited him into my home and he proceeded to pick out pieces of art for us. I returned to his gallery later that day to see what pieces he had chosen. The art was AMAZING! I left the art gallery and then I decided that it may be in my best interest to wait until Stacey returned before I purchase $10,000 worth of art that she may or may not like. I informed Mr. Gite that I would like to wait until she approved all the pieces before I buy them (P.S. The art is a no return policy) (P.S.S. I have already made the mistake of buying art she hates). This is when a beautiful exchange turn ugly... Mr. Gite decide to send me a unflattering text message. Here is what it said. "Charles you are a real piece of work. We just took all the pieces down. You could have sent her a picture of the art before hand." Now as you could imagine I was shocked that Mr. Gite would have such a visceral response. I DID NOT say I didn't want to buy it. I just merely said let me make sure Stacey likes the art considering its a $10K purchase. I decide not to even respond to such an ignorant response. He then texted me to let me know the emfamous "dogon doors" had arrived to the art gallery. I was shocked he thought I would still want to patron his business after the rude exchange. So once again I didn't respond. That brings us to yesterday and this post. Once again Mr. Gite thinks its a good sales tactic to continuously act in a rude unprofessional way. I guess some how this will get me to buy his products. Sad thing is I LOVE THE ART. P.S. Mr. Gite makes a lovely comment "I don't understand black folks". Now I am not sure what that means. Let examine this a little further. To my understanding Mr. Gite is black and the majority of his customers are black and he is selling "AFRICAN" art yet he doesn't understand black folks. P.S.S. I came to Houston to visit friends, do a little shopping, and to visit a few of my old stomping grounds. I also wanted to buy art for my new home. I specifically wanted to support a black owned gallery so I did a little research and came across Gite Gallery and I am so glad I did. They have so many beautiful pieces from African artists as well as Cuban artists (which apparently are my favorite ). I loved so many pieces but I wound up getting a beautiful piece from Afro-Cuban artist Aliana. The owner and everyone at the gallery were so nice and accommodating. I was offered a glass of wine right away and was allowed to view art and ask questions at my leisure. They also have a First Friday event every month that I will try to visit the next time I come to Houston. read more

The Gite is an amazing gallery space that boasts a wide range of art pieces all from the African Continent and the diaspora. I had the good fortune to attend a reception here and meet the owner, Lloyd Gite. He has exquisite taste and a keen eye for fine art. The prices are very, very reasonable and he has several one of a kind pieces that I tempted me. I particularly enjoyed the world from Cuba which are unique and beautiful. Houston is fortunate to have this gem of a gallery that showcases work that is difficult to access in most comparable metropolitan areas. I'll definitely return when I'm in the market for purchasing art. read more

Great place to buy and view original African art. Mr. Gite is very knowledgable about each piece and treats each one as if it's his own. The gallery is clean and each piece has it's own custom framing and unique spot. I have bought a piece from the gallery and I believe that the pricing was fair for the original art. You'll also find that Mr. Gite has a very prestigious background as a journalist and that he is very well spoken. The few times i've been I continue to learn more and more about African art from Mr. Gite. If you're in Houston this is def a go to attraction. read more

I am still pretty new to Houston and always looking for something cool and unique to do. I walked in here for the shock of my life. The gallery is located in a house in a pretty nice neighborhood. I will say that parking is non existent. Good luck with finding a spot during gallery events. As I walked in, I was in awe as soon as I opened the doors. So much color, so many pieces, so much to take in. I cannot wait until I buy my next house as this will be my go to place for some conversation pieces. Ladies: do not walk in with your totes or large purses. This place is well stocked and maneuvering can be a challenge upstairs. There are four rooms upstairs with furniture, framed art, wood pieces, and a few other items. Each room is filled to the max with any and everything you can imagine. Typically, I would reserve writing a less than desirable review, but it is imperative that business owners respect their customers in lieu of customer's discontent with their service. I visited the Gite Gallery on December 22, 2016, and spoke with the operations manager who advised that Lloyd makes the decisions on the clients' framing choices. I felt this was unusual, but I relinquished my autonomy and given the circumstances gave the experience the benefit of the doubt. However, I identified two frames I was interested in and also requested a linen mat, and I asked for a quote. I was given a quote of $150 per framing, and was told my pieces would be ready in a week or two. I did not receive a call from the gallery after two weeks, so I called and spoke to Lloyd Gite, (owner) and reiterated what I wanted. Again, Lloyd quoted me the original quote I was given $150 per framing, and was advised that linen mat is typically used for original pieces, and as an alternative, Lloyd suggested a suede mat, and I agreed. Finally, on January 12, I was notified my pieces were ready for pick-up. Upon arriving at the gallery to pick up my pieces, the mat was not linen nor suede, but cardboard and I did not like the outcome. Further, the original quote changed from $150 to $175 per framing without a linen or suede mat. Needless to say I was appalled because at no time was I contacted that the pieces would not be framed with either of the 2 mat choices. When I expressed my concern to Lloyd, he stated well linen or suede is going to cost you. After leaving the gallery, I sent an email to the operations manager and stated that I would like for Lloyd to stay in integrity and honor his word on the original agreement and if he would not, to unframe my pieces. The operations manager contacted me and stated she spoke with Lloyd and he stated I could pick up my pieces unframed. I picked up my pieces today, and although Lloyd was present, he did not acknowledge me. It is unfortunate that my business was unimportant, and unvalued. However, Houston is such a great and dynamic city, that I am sure I will find a gallery that is a good fit for me and my business and that is where I will spend my money. read more
