I had done keratin's a few times at my go-to Manhattan salon, so I was very familiar with the process. Keratin was a great option for my busy schedule.
I was seated and within minutes, things were odd, not like all the other keratin's. My eyes were watering uncontrollably... same for the stylist. She was snorting like a bear as her nose & eyes dripped profusely. As she made it halfway thru my head, the burn started. Mild at first, then as she finished, I was really burning. The stylist grabbed the flat iron to start the next step and I said "No, you must rinse this out now!" Madeline, the owner, stepped in and also said "Rinse her now."
The rinse was a relief, because the burn stopped, but my scalp was so so tender. As the stylist blow dried and styled my hair, everything hurt.
As I checked out with her husband, he looked at me and said "Whoa, your scalp is so red!"
That nite I couldn't even lay my head on my pillow. I slept upright in a chair. My scalp was raw. For the next few days I slathered my scalp with anything I thought might be healing. Nothing worked and I continued to sleep in a chair each nite. Then I found an old bottle of tea tree oil in my cabinet and tried it. Instant relief. It healed everything up in about 2 days. Today, maybe 9 yrs later, my scalp itches every day. Every single day. If I go to a salon now, I have to make special arrangements with the salon, because I can no longer sit under a dryer.
At the time, I called and discussed my concerns with Madeline. She was quick to blame everything on me. She said the gobs of hair falling out and itchy scalp were the result of me using relaxers and dye for years. True, I used relaxers for abt 25 years, but I was relaxer free for 2 yrs at the time of this visit. My hair never fell out over those 25yrs of relaxers and my scalp never itched violently. Also, when I started dyeing, again no hair falling out and no itching. I was so disgusted with her response. I just walked away and never looked back.
I'm writing today, all these years later, because friends insisted. Since I never sued as I should have, they insisted that an honest yelp review was in order. So, if you go there for a chemical treatment make sure you're with a stylist who has done that service for years. I clearly got the trainee that day.
