I stopped in for a trim and left with a much shorter absolute mess on my head. I'm not sure how it happened and I was told that the girl who cut my hair has worked there for 4 years. Yikes. I asked for a refund and they offered to have me come in and get it fixed. That seems like a really uncomfortable experience so I preferred a refund and would go elsewhere to get my hair fixed. I had 3 different email chains with various salon workers until Jean Tretheway got a hold of me. She proceeded to scream at me over the phone about how it was rude to get a refund because someone spent time on my hair already. (um...WHAT?!?) she also told me that my hair would grow back and then she screamed that I was not a good fit for the salon when I had frequented for years to have Hannah color my hair (Hannah was the best and did not do this haircut). Avoid Shear Design at all costs. A word of advise to the owner, Jean - the managing director of the salon - should probably be put through SEVERAL customer service trainings. While on a mini-vacation recently to celebrate my one year wedding anniversary, I decided some pampering was in order. After researching a few spas in the Stroudsburg area, I came across Shear Design & it turned out to be my lucky day! I booked a one hour Swedish massage & one hour Botanical facial for the next morning. After checking in upstairs, Candace, who would be doing both services, led me downstairs to the locker room. After changing into robe & slippers, I was led to the waiting area to sip water & fill out some quick info for the facial service. And then... pure BLISS:-) Both massage & facial were phenomenal but the facial, hands down, was the BEST facial I've ever experienced! During past facials, after applying the mask, the person would set a timer for approximately 10-15 minutes, and then they would disappear from the room. Not Candace! She stayed with & did an amazing scalp & neck massage throughout. Like I said... pure BLISS!! And she also used the Lavender aromatherapy, as I requested for massage, throughout both processes. Just writing about the experience takes me back to that heavenly day... I definitely will be making another appointment next time I'm in the area! ~ Quick note - the massage room is kept nice & dim, comfy heated massage table & soothing music throughout. First waxing salon I've been to in the poconos and it was so nice. Making an appointment was very easy, I made it on the day of. The receptionist on the phone was nice. They were also nice when I entered the salon. It's very clean. They have plexiglass with the receptionists to ensure safety for us both. The lady who waxed my eyebrows was very friendly and the atmosphere was so relaxing. She did a good job on my eyebrows and kept its nice thick shape. My wife and I spent a few days of alone time away from the kids recently and decided to imbibe in the relaxation of massage. I did a little research into the massage options in the Pocono area and found the prices at the spa in the hotel we were staying to be a bit high. I found Sheer Design by their reviews from their location at the nearby Stroudsmoor Inn and saw that their prices were quite reasonable. The Stroudsmoor Inn location is closed on Tuesdays so I was directed to their location in downtown Stroudsburg on 6th Street. They can be a little hard to find for those unfamiliar but after going around the block once or twice we found them across the street from a parking garage (which seemed notably short on spaces) and a local radio studio. The only option for parking seems to be on the street, where spaces are metered. I forgot to bring change but the meters are inexpensive (some being 25 cents for about 40-50 minutes but they vary widely) and the ladies at the spa were willing to part with a few quarters to help out (bonus points). The spa is located in an old church (I asked how old and was just told "very" :P). Upstairs is the hair styling and downstairs is the massage and spa area. We were greeted by our massage therapists and, once we filled out a small questionnaire, were quickly whisked to our private massage rooms. They were well sized for their use and gave the therapists plenty of room to work. Other places I have been were so small the therapists had to move the table to get around you. Soothing music plays in the background and the tables are heated to your desires (another bonus I'd not had elsewhere). Aroma therapy seems to be included with most therapies with selections including Lavender, Jasmine, Lemon Grass, and......sage I think was the last one. My therapist was Katie and due to my recent hip and back discomfort I asked for a deep tissue massage. If you are new to massage I recommend a shiatsu or relaxation massage cause you will get beat up if you go deep tissue. :) But I needed it and my therapist concentrated well on areas that needed it, even finding areas that were sore that I didn't know I had. Don't be afraid to provide feedback to your therapist if they are going to soft or hard. Following therapy clients are allowed to relax in a small waiting room (I had a 55 minute vs my wife's 90 minute session) with complimentary spring water (a must after a massage to flush toxins), herbal teas, and graham crackers. Other services include facials, mani/pedis, and the usual spa fare. Did I mention that Tuesdays are 15% off days on therapies over 1 hour in length. Super bonus. All told I walked away with a 55 minute deep tissue massage, 90 minute relaxation massage, 20 minute manicure, and tip for about $240. Not bad! I am torn about giving them 4 vs 5 stars. I'd give 4 1/2 if I could. Only minor negatives are the lack of dedicated off street parking, can be a bit hard to find, seemingly lack of handicapped access (unless they have a way in the back - I didn't see an elevator or ramp) and for some the creaking noise of the old church floors could be invasive to relaxation - but I didn't have a problem with it. My wife said she could hear nearby construction -- but I did not. If you think it may affect your session, see them at their Stroudsmoor Inn location. Overall I recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to return. Great price on a good, relaxing, professional massage. read more

I have never had a wax of any sort before and my friend Meaghan who is a loyal customer suggested I go and give it a try. Katie was my Aesthetician and she was amazing. She was so nice and really understanding and comforting. If you are a first timer like me, request Katie. The salon itself was very hip and cool with throw pillows and couches and some retail items. They have multiple floors and it takes up the entire building it seems. They do everything from nails, to hair, to spa days and more. I will deff be returning when I am in the area. As far as the price, it was more than I expected after a standard 20% tip however the service was worth it. read more

Simply Unbelievable. I called this salon with a ridiculous question: could they please, please, please check their records and find the name of the (now discontinued) sebastian lipstick I bought there around 2003. It was/is the most perfect red. I had purchased it many times over the years (not there but in ny where I live) but now was down to my last tube and the name on the bottom of the tube had disappeared. I couldn't remember where I had purchased it in the city but I remembered my first tube was purchased at Shear Design. After searching their old records, the receptionist at Shear Design was able to give me the name and product number. How is that for customer service??!!! And she did it unhurriedly and with a smile in her voice. She could have easily blew me off at the outset by saying they don't keep the details but instead she took the time to help me out. How unbelievable is that! I will certainly be giving them my business because in addition to such great customer attention they do a mean massage, fantastic hair and a pretty relaxing mani/pedi. read more

I went in for a Brazilian wax today. and added on a brow wax,my appt was with Julie. she did an amazing job. before I made the appt I asked the receptionist if it was a "completely bare" Brazilian. she said yes, which meant to me all hair gone...all...every region. after I realized Julie was moving up to the brows. I just let her continue. figuring at shears maybe it isn't their practice to wax perineal area or between buttocks. meaning shears brazilian IS NOT full, completely bare or whatever means all gone to you. everywhere else was smooth besides those places and eyebrows came out beautifully. I will go back and give it a second chance but make sure I point out clearly what I'm expecting....HAIR ALL GONE DOWN THERE!! I've had many many brazilians. by far one of the best at shears. one other thing that also suprised me is shears being a fab place to walk into and sorta upscale. is they also don't use hard wax, which helps things go a lot faster. less time ripping out hair and possible layer of skin the better. read more

I came across Shear Design Salon by happenstance. And I was so glad that I did! I was looking for a good salon in the Pocono area to get a uv gel manicure. At Shear Design Salon, Julie did my biosculpture gel manicure and it looked great! Now I'm hooked! I go back every two weeks to get my biosculpture manicure done. Recently, I needed to have my hair done formally for a marine ball and Nicole did a beautiful job on my hair; so when I went back of course I asked her to color my hair and find a shade that would stand out but look natural and she did a wonderful job! Stephanie was always on top of my appointments/trials and was always available whenever I had a question or concern. Dana at Shear Design is fantastic. I went to Shear Design to have my hair styled for a wedding and Dana styled my hair exactly as I wanted it. She took the time to look at my hair before washing it and ask me questions about how I wanted it to look. I showed her a picture of a style I liked, and she recreated it. I wanted it down with smooth, loose curls, and she used a 2 inch curling iron to create the perfect look. Shear Design's prices are also extremely reasonable. read more

I'm always happy when I go to Shear Design. The staff is super friendly and very helpful with scheduling. My go to color and hair person is Cassandra but I've never had a bad experience with any of the staff. Cassandra is the best, my hair always looks great after I leave the salon. She does a excellent work on my highlights and knows how to do color so well. She makes my hair look the best that it can. The spa is great too! It's always very relaxing and I've done a bunch of services there from massage, facials and mani/pedis. I love going with my friend there when we need to destress. And I've taken my mom for a special mother/daughter day a bunch of times and we always leave happy. I also like that they give back to the community by fundraising for organizations like the local domestic violence and sexual assault center, Women's Resources. Thanks Shear Design! read more

I had booked this salon for my bridal party's hair and makeup this past November. The planning experience went really well and made me feel good about the whole process and everything going smoothly on the day of... but boy was I mistaken. We arrived on time and ready to go and things seemed to be going smoothly. I had a total of 8 girls, including myself, for hair and makeup with an out time of noon. At 1130 one of the makeup/hair artists packed up and LEFT leaving only two other artists there working. Meanwhile I still had TWO bridesmaids (one was my mom) to still get makeup done and TWO others needed their hair done. Another hour went by and I still had a bridesmaid yet to get her makeup done and the two artists that remained were both working on hair. So we had to arrange for transportation to come pick up those of us who were done and bring us back to my house to get ready for the ceremony that started at two pm. By the time I got back to my house at 1245, the videographer and photographers we're both waiting for me and I was rushed to get ready. By the time the rest of my bridesmaids and my mother got home from the salon, it was nearly 1:15 and they still had to get changed before going over to the church for the ceremony at 2:00. I was not able to get any pictures with my bridesmaids at my home with my photographer (who I had paid extra for to come early to my house before the ceremony) and my videographer had very limited footage. Needless to say I was beyond upset and stressed during this time and we were late to the ceremony. And to top it all off, I later found out that one of the artists was being very disrespectful and questioning my maid of honor why she was freaking out and panicking (because they were over an hour beyond the promised "out" time). I couldn't believe it! Overall terrible experience and I do NOT recommend this company if you are looking for bridal hair/makeup! read more

I went to shear designs for a hot stone massage and overall it went pretty well. It was really relaxing, and my particular attendant did a really good job around my head and feet. The building was a little old and small, which made the waiting on resting areas a little cramped and weird. They do have showers, which I found helpful, but that space was also a little small and cramped. The prices on the top end of the average scale, which was 90 bucks for an hour. I might come back again, but first i'm going to look around to see if there are any other spas with larger more comfortable waiting areas. read more

Went here on January 26th to get a basic wash, cut, and style. Walked out pretty happy with it. I washed it on the 28th. As soon as it dried (air dried) it was obvious that my bangs were burnt. They were dry, curly, and VERY coarse totally different from the rest of my hair. I called them on Monday the 30th (since they are closed on Sunday) The receptionist was amazing and understanding and scheduled me with the same stylist (Cheryl) to have it fixed. A few hours later I got a voice mail from Cheryl telling me that it was impossible that she burnt my hair, because it could only be burnt by "straightening your hair 2-3 times a day every day for a month" ! I was obviously seeing red. Here I am with burnt hair, and a stylist that was saying that there is no way she caused it, when the ONLY thing I did was WASH IT. Went in with perfectly healthy hair, came out with burnt hair. So I called them again. The receptionist scheduled me with another stylist (Cassandra). I went in there and she fixed it, but not before blaming my well water for the damage. I've had well water for 2 years, and when I sat down in Cheryl's chair the first time I had perfectly healthy hair she even said I had "no split ends at all" So NOW all of a sudden I have damage?! I don't think so. Thing is that when I noticed the damage, I wasn't that upset. It was only a little spot, and I knew it would be an easy fix. What made me upset is the fact that nobody wanted to fix it. Or take responsibility. The only person that even admitted that it might possibly be Cheryl's mistake was the RECEPTIONIST!!! I don't like being called a liar. Or stupid. Or misinformed. I don't like being made to feel bad because someone else made a mistake and I wanted someone to fix it. I went in there with healthy hair. I expected to leave there the same. While Cassandra did a great job fixing it, and even gave me some free product to get it healthier (since she couldn't cut out all of the damage) I am not sure that I will be going back. I just feel like I was treated poorly. Especially for the cost of a haircut there. If I end up going back at my next schedule appointment and my experience changes I will change my review here. read more

I waited to write a review until I had been a happy customer for months. Sometimes salons tend to give you a fantastic treatment your first time in, and then over time you become less important so the treatment changes...This is NOT the case at Shear Design. I have enjoyed every experience I have had with them. Repeatedly. Erin Lawley is my girl for color. I LOVE her. She does a fantastic job covering my tough grays. She is familiar with my hair, and the way the dye needs to be laid to ensure that I get the best coverage possible. The other staff is just about always busy. They are bustling to and fro, but never make you feel unnoticed. They go out of their way to offer refreshments, magazines, to adjust your seat, etc...Anything to help make your time more pleasant and enjoyable. When they rinse my dye, they always give a lovely massage. There was only one time where I had a terrible shampoo job there, however I will note that I no longer see that intern working there. This salon values exceptional workmanship. Each of their staff members are highly trained in their fields, and you can tell that they work a lot with the younger staff to ensure that they are gaining those same skills. It's really nice not having to travel to Manhattan anymore, and knowing that I get the same quality at Shear Design is priceless. read more
