I didn't realise it when I walked into this bar but it is actually park of the Oaks Apartment Hotel that sits on the Glenelg foreshore. Since all of these apartments have suddenly appeared on the Glenelg foreshore over the years it was a little difficult to work out what it a part of the hotel complex and what wasn't. While I've never been a huge fan of the bars that you find in hotels, this one actually wasn't all that bad. They have a nice balcony (though one of the overlooks a carpark and the hotel opposite, which isn't all that great, but another does overlook the beach). The beers were okay and they do have live music. I'd probably come back here if I happen to be around Glenelg again (which is likely to happen sometime). read more

Ahhhh Sunday arvos, the perfect time to catch up on some book work, do some weeding or clean the bathroom! Pffft, whatever, I'll sink some piss instead! Once in a while I find myself down at the Pier with mates on a Sunday arvo for some brewskis on the balcony. I have also found myself there on the odd weekend evening also but haven't really felt the same vibe as I have on a Sunday arvo. It probably has more to do with my mood than anything else, but there you have it! The nights I have been there on the turps it has not been overly crowded, but I gather it does get a bit more packed on Public holidays, so plan ahead if the Pier is in your sights! read more

Today hubby and I wanted to be somewhere coastal so we took ourselves to The Pier at Glenelg for lunch. It's a very welcoming place with gorgeous views. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I went up to the bar to place my order and the server was busy with another customer who wasn't quite sure what she wanted however the server still took the time to acknowledge me and said she'd be with me in a moment. I love that! All businesses should take notice of customers no matter what their trade is. Hubby and I chose a sharing platter so that we could sample a few different things that the Pier had to offer. I started off with a delicious Moscato, hubby sipped on an Apple Cider and we watched Ice Hockey on the big screens while we waited for our platter to come. With sun streaming through the windows, the brilliant ocean in the background and bustling tables around, it really was a glorious way to start a lunch. Our platter looked delicious when it came out but I could tell hubby was already thinking that it wasn't enough. I didn't know what to pick first! I ended up trying one of the Arancini Balls. They are lightly fried risotto balls with semi dried tomato, basil and pecorino with lime aioli. The first thing I noticed was the little kick the lime aioli gave it. Not a punch, just a little kick. Enough to make it stand out without taking away from the taste. It had a soft gooey centre and a crisp crunchy outer. I really enjoyed the Aranchini Balls and was sorry I'd told hubby I'd only have one and he could have the other two. The next thing I went for was the Garlic Bread. If I had to choose one thing to eat for the rest of my life it would probably be bread. It was nice, however I would have liked it toasted a little more. It wasn't overly garlic too which was nice. Sometimes garlic bread is so heavy laden with garlic that you can't taste anything else and it repeats on you for the rest of the day. The fries were good. Crisp and fresh as they should be and presented in the little fry basket as they are seeming to do these days. I left hubby to devour those. The taco was interesting. Soft taco with pulled pork, rocket, red onion, salsa and sour cream. It was really so very tasty! The rocket brought a freshness to the heavy meat taste and the salsa and sour cream had a nice creamy texture which made it a pleasure to eat. I also found this to be deceptively filling. I left the Soft Shell Crab Sliders till last as I'm not really a seafood person and those little crab legs were freaking me out. The photograph doesn't really show what I was looking at from my angle. They were in a brioche bun which I've said before is not my favourite but seems to be the rage for burgers and steak sandwiches these days. The slider had a strong seafood taste which someone who likes seafood would probably really enjoy. I let hubby have the rest of mine but even I, a non seafood eater, could appreciate the flavour that went into it. Of course the first thing hubby said when we were finished is "What's for lunch" but honestly, that would have been a good amount of food for regular people. I would definitely recommend the Pier. The views were spectacular, everything we had was delicious and well presented and the staff were really so very friendly and made us feel welcome and at home. Next time you're walking along the Glenelg foreshore I recommend you drop in for a drink and little bite to eat! read more

Look, I know it was valentine's day and the other side was busy but there is no excuse for this sloppy outfit. Massive big screen TV with the tennis on is pixelated and hangs, wine list that is full of n/a so I order something listed as available, pay for it, bar staff goes missing and comes back with we don't have any. So I order something else but that's also out of stock as she rummages through bottles of red wine to find a Riesling... In the end she says, how about a glass of pinot gries, OK I say..get back to the table and its warm. Food finally arrives, an hour for a hamburger, there is no cutlery - not a knife to be had. I ask the barstaff for knives and some salt, he comeback and gives me three knives. I say and the salt, so he goes searching around for salt and hands me an empty shaker... every salt shaker is empty.. Are they broke, no wine, no salt or just too lazy? Anyway the beef burger is totally chard patty, complete inedible and yet stone cold with congealed orange cheese stuck like glue. Inedible and a horrible , poorly run restaurant that has everything going for it except nobody who works there gives a crap. The only thing id say, is they handled my complaint politely and returned my money without argument. read more

There are two sides to the Pier at Glenelg. One of which is good, and one of which is bad. There is the nightclub side where the crowd gets overly rowdy, and a lot of over-age drinking occurs. Yes, I said over-age. I would conclude that this is the bad side. Then there is the day, hotel and function side of The Pier. This side caters for a completely different environment with a much better (in my opinion) ambience. During the day, The Pier is more than idyllic with large windows overlooking crashing waves, and a balcony situated at the foot of the marina. I have located here for breakfast and it definitely eludes a pristine yet relaxed eating environment. It's quite the opposite from what one should expect when attending to Pier venues after hours. My Godson had his Christening within the main function room of The Pier, which made way for a perfect night. The beachside venue was fantastic, and looked great in pictures, and of course also in real life. There was sufficient space, a personal raised bar, elevated balcony and a rather large dance floor. I would highly recommend the function room without hesitation. Finally, to the hotel rooms themselves. The rooms here give off a beachside apartment-like vibe, which I personally really enjoy. Everything is modern, new and a perfect way to feel completely relaxed. The best thing about the whole hotel room experience however, is going down to the foyer in the morning before starting off your day with a delicious breakfast. Good place to go for a drink.. Can get really busy weekends and crammed. Great to sit outside on a nice day or an evening and look over at the beach and watch the sunset with a few wines/beers. read more

Dinner tonight in the front bar of the pier with a party of 9 people.. Called ahead and pre booked a table which was a good idea as there seemed to be only a small dining section layed out for dinner and we all seemed to be squished into the one area towards the beachfront end.. Everyone at our table had scoopons except for us as we are vego and the scoopon was for platter of meat & seafood.. Ordered two veggie burgers and wow very pleasantly surprised they were actually really really good.. $16.90 and it came with small wire basket of chips on the side.. It was actually better than some of the veggie burgers we have had recently at boutique burger bars!! We got our meal before everyone else and it was delicious!! We would definitely ordered it again.. The overall ambience or vibe of the Pier is not crash hot as well your just in the front bar of a hotel but for where you are and what you get we will be back for more!! Veggie Burger included brioche bun, grilled haloumi, tomato, spanish onion, salad leaf, roasted field mushroom, grilled capsicum, relish & fries!! Amazing if im being fussy it's obviously not trying to be a high end dining establishment so I've deducted half point deducted due to the vibe and overall atmosphere and comfort factor - was squishy and there was no or very little music and lighting/ambience in dining area was more like an RSL club and the other half point was not from our experience as our meals came out in good time but we had finished our meals when the rest of the table got their food.. Massive servings at really reasonable prices, I had salt and pepper squid for 20.90 and my friends has massive schnitzels for 19.90 - I'm talking falling off the already huge plate. Awesome food (best I've had in a while) and awesome service. 11/10! read more
