I don't doubt…read morethat people have had positive experiences with them, but I felt unsupported and unsafe in their care when it mattered most. If I had seen a story like mine I would have chosen a different provider, and I hope to give others an opportunity to make a fully informed decision. The week leading up to my labor was when things began to take a turn. I reached out to Julie when I noticed a green discharge a day concerned that it might be amniotic fluid. She dismissed my concern after reviewing a photo. 4 days later I went into spontaneous labor. Julie forgot to take my temperature when she arrived. One hour after my daughter was born, she used traction to help deliver the placenta and I subsequently had a postpartum hemorrhage and lost 2 liters of blood. I then transferred to the hospital. Once there, I got confirmation that my membranes had been ruptured for close to 5 days as I had a high fever and elevated white blood cell count. I want to say that I am grateful for Julie's persistence when my uterus was failing to contract and I was bleeding. She diligently performed fundal massage and made sure I received the medication I needed. I believe these were life saving interventions. However, there were other actions that left me feeling unsafe and unsupported at the same time. - Julie asked Kara to set up an IV after I had lost the blood, and Kara was extremely hesitant to do so. Then she attempted to, blew out the vein in my hand and didn't try again. - Julie and Kara squabbled with each other about how to move forward when the placenta still hadn't been delivered. - Julie was not proactive in calling an ambulance or recommending we do so after I lost a large volume of blood. Instead, she asked me if I wanted her to call an ambulance as I was losing consciousness and was hardly in a position to make that decision. - Julie dragged her feet coming to my home once active labor started, not taking me seriously as a first time mom. Finally, when I brought up my concerns to Julie about my experience, she was very dismissive and defensive. She blamed her absenteeism during my labor on the fact that she had 11 births to attend that month, and told me I was lucky to have had a fast first labor but that most people don't. And she essentially admitted to being like OBGYNs that only show up for the birth because she has so many births to attend. Julie and Kara presented themselves as proactive, but when issues arose that was not my experience. And in addition, they do lip service to being unlike OBs and being present, yet really expect to swoop in at the 11th hour to catch your baby. In many instances they abdicated their responsibility and I strongly believe that sheer luck kept things from ending tragically for myself and my daughter.

I switched from my normal OBGYN to Kara and Julie when I was 15 weeks pregnant. I attended one of their open house events to get to know them more and understand their philosophy. I had such a different experience from the OBGYN office the moment I stepped in their doorway. Crowded, busy, waiting room? NOPE. Rude receptionist who has no idea who you are, NOPE. Cheese Alert Warning: Midwife Women's Wellness makes me feel at home. Their office is setup to feel homey with numerous couches, play toys for little ones, and no snarky receptionist. I met with Julie the majority of my prenatal checkups and she's my favorite little firecracker. She's honest, forthcoming, and sassy. I did see Kara a few times just in case she was the midwife on call during my delivery and she was! Kara is sweet, gentle, and encouraging. Many people use midwives to have a "natural" birth, but that was never my plan. I knew I would probably end up using an epidural, but I wanted the person delivering my precious girl to actually know my name and have a relationship with me. Yes, I delivered in a hospital. Yes, I used an epidural. But having Kara there through the whole process was amazing. Even at the hospital the day after my baby was born, a nurse commented on how impressed she was that Kara came and checked on me and spent over an hour with us. OBGYNs never do that. After meeting initially with Cheryl, we both were certain that we wanted not only a home birth, but her to be the midwife who helped prepare us and ultimately help us bring our son into the world. Thought there are a million reasons we'd recommend her, ill name a few big ones here: 1. Resourceful: Cheryl knows what she's talking about. She is a constant learner and goes above and beyond what is required for her CPM. Our questions were met with well thought out answers and we felt much more confident as we made our decisions on things like cord clamping, vaccinations, etc. 2. Compassionate: Cheryl cares deeply for her clients. She was a great support, and helped us process emotionally as we prepared for our birth...I hadn't anticipated that on top of our typical prenatal care. 3. Assertive: She is direct in the best way. Enough said. 4. She helps you through the waiting: i was 18 past my baby's "due date" and it was very hard. I was met with a lot of discouragement and opposition from others and Cheryl was a contact source of encouragement as we stuck to our plan to wait. 5. Cheryl was encouraging at every step along the way and she was so knowledgeable about pregnancy, labor and delivery and my newborn. Darcie ripped us off big time only giving back less than $400 out of the $1500 we had given as a down-payment!! For two appointments!! If you are considering Darcie I would highly recommend looking at all your options first. Darcie seemed great at first, but I soon realized I was being treated like a patient not a person. Darcie made me feel like I wasn't important and she didn't have time to address concerns that came up. She basically just bossed me around telling me what to do and never asking how I felt about things. She botched the labwork at the first appointment and still took all the money even though I had to get the labwork re-done somewhere else. Darcie had one of her friends (not part of the birthteam) sitting in at my appointment which made me feel very uncomfortable. She never once even examined my belly with her hands. I didn't feel safe with Darcie. When I called to talk about the things that were bothering me, Darcie made me feel like an annoyance and a burden!! Darcie might be a great choice if you want to feel like you're at a Drs. office with a bossy teen nurse running the show. I needed more connection than that. I needed to feel safe and that my individual needs were being addressed. Darcie always seemed rushed and too busy for questions. I'm glad I didn't stay with her but I wish she hadn't taken so much money for nothing!!! Getting ripped off like that in the middle of my pregnancy and then having to go pay someone else to actually get decent care was a very negative experience. No pregnant woman should ever be treated the way she treated me! When I found a good midwife she said that she had heard similar stories from other women that had left Darcie's care!! I hope Darcie stops taking on so many patients so she can actually treat people with respect and dignity. I could have gone to an OB and been treated better.

Where do I start? Can I give 6 stars?…read more This was our first pregnancy. Even scarier, we got pregnant in Georgia and decided to move to KC during the pandemic. AND to top it off, we don't have health insurance. We knew that we didn't want to risk going to a hospital during the pandemic and let's face it - hospitals suck. I don't care! They SUCK! A friend of a friend of my partner recommended Darcie and Dreaming Tree because she had her third child delivered by Darcie and employed us to venture down that road. We first met Darcie via Zoom before we moved and learned what the process was and how we do the deal. Darcie was clear and concise and no bullshit - which is was we want. We don't need theatrics, or stereotypes or woo-woo Instagram here's my baby hospital picture; we're creating a human and we want it delivered safely and realistically. Darcie has had 13+ years delivering babies and the team she works with might as well be called the Avengers. Flash forward to us living in KC... We meet Darcie and the team, we even go to a birthing class, we get the woo-woo pics of the sonogram and Darcie sends us to an external facility for a special ultrasound. Everything was looking good, now we just need to push the baby out. We were a couple weeks late and we learned that it's common with first time moms to be 42 weeks. As my partner finally went into labor, Darcie came to our house (by this time she was already a member of the family) and check our contractions and told me how I can help and get the house ready for our new addition. This was a long labor - 27 hours - and Darcie was here the entire time, making coffee, boiling water, timing contractions, ushering us to exercise to increase blood flow, getting some snacks in us to keep our energy right etc (seriously i her she was doing other stuff I had no knowledge of) Darcie told me in the very beginning that if we wanted to "catch" our baby as it is born that we could. And the plan was for me to catch it as a powerful meaningful experience. When the time actually came and the pushing was at the tail end, I asked Darcie to receive the baby. I'll never forget Darcie delivering our daughter and I'll always be grateful for her attention and care. That goes for her entire team as well! TL:DR Our first baby - we don't like hospitals and don't have health insurance. Generously affordable.

The facility is beautiful with large windows overlooking the woods out back, clean, serene, and located right next to my obgyn's office. The nurses & the midwife on call the night of the birth of my first son were all the sweetest. They not only offered quality care for me and my baby, but also my poor husband who was helping me manage labor pain and my sister who came to support. We gave birth to our healthy son and were offered quality care! Unfortunately, that's when the good experience ended. Our postpartum/newborn nurse who came to visit our home was as rude as ever. The lady who performed the circumcision a few days after his birth did a horrible job (too little of his foreskin was removed), and now my son may need to get a second circumcision to fix her mistake. Not to mention, it took the admin office nearly 4 weeks to get my sons medical records sent to his pediatrician (something that could have been completed with a simple email or fax). Still, my natural birthing experience was soo good that I opted to give birth to my second here! I went into the office and registered with the front desk right after my 8-week prenatal check-up! I even went in once a month (after each of my obgyn appointments) just to make sure they had everything they needed from me (signed paperwork, offered my insurance info, and even changed my insurance provider for them to ensure I could get coverage for all their services), only to find out at week 35 of pregnancy that I wasn't registered. Apparently, they are now TOO full to accept me! Upon conversing with their office manager, the best they can do for me now is to tell me THE DAY I GO INTO LABOR whether they have space for me or not. Now at 36 weeks pregnant, I am being rushed to register at a hospital. Never again.

One thing I didn't like too much was the high turnover rate with the nurses because I like seeing the same people and relationship building with my medical providers. Thankfully we didn't have any issues with insurance and billing. The downside was in scheduling appointments. I remember always scheduling my next appointment before leaving the one I just finished. There were a few times I'd go in to my next appt and would be told that my appt couldn't be found, so I'd wait in the lounge until a midwife could fit me in. I love Cathy and the work she does, but she also wasn't the most pleasant person while I was giving birth. I also wish that I had had a little more support after my daughter was born. It was my first child and I wasn't even exactly sure how to breastfeed or anything. If I have another child I'd probably opt for a home birth midwife, but I'm also happy this birthing center was an option that was available to me.

I think he ran from his office to the hospital ; - ) There are times when the doctors are called out to the adjacent hospital ( Overland Park Regional) and the other providers have to fill in - when that happens scheduling does a great job of alerting you so that you can reschedule or see another provider. I'm a runner and have been experiencing pain in my left leg and glute since early April. It got to the point where it was too difficult to run. What probably impressed me the most was his extensive work with athletes, including the KU basketball team. He helped me understand how my body alignment was causing sciatic issues. He also communicated a deep understanding of my bone and muscle structure. My treatment consisted of targeted massage, plus lots of stretching. After my first treatment, I made a business trip to Boston and went out for a walk each morning. I tried to run and found the pain had dramatically lessened. The second day, I ran longer than the first. On my next appointment, I told Brian he was a miracle worker. I couldn't believe how quickly his work would get me back to feeling normal. He shared a variety of warm-up exercises to ensure I'm ready to run without pain. I hope he can deliver equal results for you.
