I was ALL THE RAVE about this birthing center. My birthing experience with them in 2020 with my first child was magical! The facility is beautiful with large windows overlooking the woods out back, clean, serene, and located right next to my obgyn's office. The nurses & the midwife on call the night of the birth of my first son were all the sweetest. They not only offered quality care for me and my baby, but also my poor husband who was helping me manage labor pain and my sister who came to support. We gave birth to our healthy son and were offered quality care! Unfortunately, that's when the good experience ended. Our postpartum/newborn nurse who came to visit our home was as rude as ever. The lady who performed the circumcision a few days after his birth did a horrible job (too little of his foreskin was removed), and now my son may need to get a second circumcision to fix her mistake. Not to mention, it took the admin office nearly 4 weeks to get my sons medical records sent to his pediatrician (something that could have been completed with a simple email or fax). Still, my natural birthing experience was soo good that I opted to give birth to my second here! I went into the office and registered with the front desk right after my 8-week prenatal check-up! I even went in once a month (after each of my obgyn appointments) just to make sure they had everything they needed from me (signed paperwork, offered my insurance info, and even changed my insurance provider for them to ensure I could get coverage for all their services), only to find out at week 35 of pregnancy that I wasn't registered. Apparently, they are now TOO full to accept me! Upon conversing with their office manager, the best they can do for me now is to tell me THE DAY I GO INTO LABOR whether they have space for me or not. Now at 36 weeks pregnant, I am being rushed to register at a hospital. Never again. read more

I had a relatively good experience here with my prenatal appointments and the birthing classes. The facility was always very clean when I visited. One thing I didn't like too much was the high turnover rate with the nurses because I like seeing the same people and relationship building with my medical providers. Thankfully we didn't have any issues with insurance and billing. The downside was in scheduling appointments. I remember always scheduling my next appointment before leaving the one I just finished. There were a few times I'd go in to my next appt and would be told that my appt couldn't be found, so I'd wait in the lounge until a midwife could fit me in. I love Cathy and the work she does, but she also wasn't the most pleasant person while I was giving birth. I also wish that I had had a little more support after my daughter was born. It was my first child and I wasn't even exactly sure how to breastfeed or anything. If I have another child I'd probably opt for a home birth midwife, but I'm also happy this birthing center was an option that was available to me. read more

I am so thankful I found New Birth Company! The quality of care is top notch. I always felt like my concerns were being taken serious and I never left feeling uneasy. If I could give 0 stars I would.. it has taken me some time to say anything. First off, Patty was rude to my s/o and I and made everything in the billing department a massive pain when it absolutely did not have to be. Nothing against any of the midwives there, all really sweet ladies...but I would still have my child today if I were treated properly. They supposedly assume I had a late term of gestational diabetes, but didn't give me a proper diagnosis.. but if I would've gone to a normal hospital they would've seen any issues going on.. Let me be quite clear: the medical (pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum) care was amazing. Cathy (the midwife that delivered both of my girls) was everything I needed during both births. However I cannot recommend New Birth to anyone due to the horrible clerical/financial aspect of partnering with them for their services. After the birth of my second child, I was told to call back after 6 weeks to discuss my financial profile. When I did so, the person I was told to get in contact with told me that my situation was complicated (which it is) and to give her two weeks before following up with her. As this was not an outrageous request, I was glad to do so. After her requested amount of time, I called for an update...and couldn't get in touch with her. Office staff assured me that they left her messages that I called and to call again the following day if I didn't receive a phone call from her. Thus far, I've called over 10 times (per the suggestion of New Birth office staff), sent multiple emails, and attempted every form of reaching out to their financial office that I can. This has gone one for 2.5 months. I'm receiving statements from providers, expecting money to be paid, and New Birth refuses to reach out to help me answer my questions regarding errant charges from their office. After 2.5 months, I finally was set up for a phone appointment to discuss the financial aspect of my services...hopefully to get both clarity and closure so I can move past PAYING for the birth and on to the parenting part of it. The phone appointment was today. The call never came. The lack of professionalism of this company is astounding, their inability to return a phone call or email is unmatched, and as a woman who has tried again and again to do right by the company...I can no longer recommend them as an option for non-hospital births for expectant mommas in Kansas City. I am firmly pro-midwifery and the midwifery model of birth. Unfortunately, I am now convinced that it is no longer an option within Kansas City due to my experience with New Birth Company. read more

We just had our first baby here and we cannot speak highly enough of our experience. Prenatal care was thoughtful and thorough yet not overwhelming or time consuming. The nurses, midwives, and our doula is what I really want to give my highest praises to. Each of them played such a crucial part in empowering me to have a natural and successful birth; giving me control over decisions and teaching me how my body knows what to do and how to connect with my body in the most unbelievable way. We arrived when I wasn't quite ready to be admitted but thankfully, we met our doula, Nadah, there at 11pm which was an enormous help. Nadah has a close relationship with the midwives at New Birth and she is the doula they suggested we hire. Upon finding out that we weren't quite ready to be admitted for active labor, we were able to stay and got to spend time working with Nadah in a very relaxed and serene environment she has created in her massage room at the center. This helped my early labor phase progress quickly into active labor. Natasha was our midwife and her patience, genuine care, and skills is what enabled me to endure and succeed in natural birth after several hours of pushing. Natasha is so kind and gentle, professional and wise and was so attentive to my verbal and non verbal cues throughout my labor. She was just absolutely incredible and I would hands down want her at our next birth. And our nurses, Kennedy and Kristen, were there for it all and were very personable and attentive to my and our baby's needs throughout our stay and answered any questions we had before going home. Then even after being home, the postpartum nurse, Holly, came to visit and she is wonderful and even helped me work on getting my breast milk supply to come in. It was so helpful to have her visit us after taking home our first newborn baby. And I'll finish by adding that I scheduled a postpartum massage with Nadah rather than prenatal massage and I can't suggest that enough. Since she was also our doula, she knew exactly what my body went through and we also ended by having a follow up conversation to process the birth and celebrate together the miracle of life. My husband and newborn boy were allowed to join us and Nadah was very flexible and we could pause my massage if I needed to nurse. All of that is to say, I truly can't recommend New Birth and Nadah enough!! read more

I knew well before I found out I was pregnant that I did not want a typical hospital birth and sought out a birth center. I was so excited to find one in Kansas (not exactly known for being super progressive)! New Birth was fantastic from they day I found out I was pregnant! They have a philosophy that there should be no strangers at your birth so you will work with all of the midwives and nurses during your pregnancy, which I loved! All of your prenatal visits are done with the birth center as well as your postpartum visits and baby's first couple visits (they do all the tests and screenings a hospital does but from the comfort of your own home!). Birthing at New Birth is the step between a hospital birth and a home birth- so your labor process is more hands off than a hospital, but not as "on your own" as a home birth. They do not have high level pain meds- this is a place for natural birth! They do have somethings to take the edge off early on or if you're struggling but they do not kill the pain like a spinal tap. I 100% recommend getting a doula, I didn't think I would need one at first but the more questions I asked about the process I realized it's really quite necessary! There are lovely clean and comfortable birthing suites to choose from that have big deep tubs to labor in, private toilet, a kitchenette and a large comfortable queen size bed. The windows have privacy screens but it was really nice to look out and see nature while laboring! They have a smoothie bar where they'll make you something to keep you energized while your laboring as well! I'm so so happy with my experience here and will be back for my women's wellness visits and all of my future pregnancies and births! read more

We really loved our birth experience at New Birth Company! They were very up front about what services they do or do not provide. They are available at all hours of the day to answer questions over the phone, and encouraged me to come in after hours when I had concerns, even when it meant a staff member had to drive back in from home. I felt like they were the right mix of firm and gentle during the birth: I was as comfortable as one can be during a natural labor! :) I don't believe that the center is officially a "Christian" business, but I found that they were very supportive of our faith. After our son was born, I started singing the doxology to calm his crying, and all three of my midwives joined in! It was a beautiful moment. I will respond to David M.'s concerns. I believe NBC is still in the early stages of the business and have some fine-tuning to do on the office side of things. I understand it would be pretty offensive to have someone forget you, although I am quite surprised that his wife had the same midwife at each visit. We saw a different person each time so that when the big day arrived, I would be with a familiar face. I'm not sure what he was expecting in terms of prenatal visits; these are pretty standard practice, and should be fairly uneventful if everything is going well. We were very happy with our experience! When I chat with other moms, they tell me they wish they could have been in such an environment. Many women at traditional hospitals describe being pressured into procedures that they later found were unnecessary. read more

Unfortunately I am not basing this review off of prenatal and birth experience here because I was not given that option. Without being seen one time or talking with my doctors they refused me care because I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 11. I'm now 36 and have not had a seizure in 25 years and my epileptologist is in full support of my decision to have a midwife attended natural birth. I asked for referrals to other midwives that would work with me for a home birth and I was told very rudely that she knows of no midwife that would ever take someone with epilepsy. I don't think the attitude and unwillingness to help a mom who wants a natural birth is conducive to their philosophy and I can only imagine that regulation and doing this at a center has altered their behavior and care to resemble more of a hospital than a natural and caring environment. In addition she was wrong, it took me all of 3 hours to hear back from multiple area midwives with outstanding reviews that told me they are absolutely willing to work with me and give me either the birth experience I want or guide me in the right direction. This is the response I expected. To nurture moms that want an out of hospital experience and give them the support they need. These midwifes also deliver twins which I thought was amazing. If this or its sister location turn you away for a reason you do not truly think will effect your birth please seek out more supportive midwives in your area and don't give up! read more

My experience with New Birth Company started off great. Outside of a few appointments that they asked me to reschedule, I was please with my experience and prenatal appointments...initially. My experience worsened when I was about 15 hours into labor. Long story short, I was transferred to a hospital that WAS NOT the initial hospital New Birth said I'd be transferred to if needed. During the orientation, prior to me deciding to choose New Birth, they told me and my husband that the affiliated hospital was Overland Park Regional. That was the first issue. The second issue occurred when I inquired about my refund. Since I did not deliver at the birth center, I was entitled to a refund check. They continuously gave me the run around AND after receiving a large bill from the hospital and calling my insurance, I found out that New Birth had not reported all of my prenatal appointments to my insurance which is the reason why I had not met my deductible prior to my baby's delivery date. Had they reported my appointments in a timely manner, I would have met my deductible and had to pay close to nothing for my hospital experience. NEW BIRTH GAVE ME THE RUN AROUND ABOUT MY REFUND UNTIL I SENT THEM A NICE LITTLE EMAIL THAT SPARKED FIRE UNDER THEIR BUTTS... I received my refund the next day! DO YOUR RESEARCH AND READ THE REVIEWS ABOUT THIS COMPANY. If I could give 0 stars I would. Unless you want to risk the safety of your baby & yourself, DO NOT have your birth here. Everything they try to tell you is wrong about giving birth at the hospital is actually what they do here. (Example- your birth being rushed, forced csection) I had the worst first birth experience because I chose to completely trust the staff here. The staff here have no idea what they are doing. & are also very rude, on many accounts. During my birth "experience" they told me it was time to start pushing when I was not ready to push at all. The baby wasn't even low enough to start pushing & I wasn't fully dilated or effaced. But since this was my first baby I had no idea when I was suppose to push & trusted they knew what they were doing. After them breaking the water & two and a half hours of hard pushing the midwife had another plan! ⁉ She (Cathy) told me "next time you push I'm going to try to make more room". She literally put her hands inside me & tried ripping me open. Multiple times. Still no sign of baby at all. I had to be transferred to the hospital by ambulance. At the hospital they tried to let me dilate fully for many hours. But the risks kept going up. They told me my cervix was way too swollen to be able to have a vaginal birth (& if I tried I might bleed out) & told me it was from the early pushing & being ripped open. I HAD TO HAVE A CSECTION BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DID TO ME AT THE NEW BIRTH COMPANY. I was crying so hard, this was everything I didn't want. I never want what happened to me to happen to any other women. If you are considering giving birth here DON'T. They try to make everything seem like rainbows & sunshine but it's not. & they have no idea what they are doing. If you know anyone considering giving birth here please warn them. After all this, they still tried to tell me they think they gave me excellent care. HAHA WHAT A JOKE & SLAP IN THE FACE. You do not want to put your trust in the New Birth Company like I did. read more

I wish I could give ZERO stars. This place ruined my experience! I wanted a "water birth" and paid for their inflated priced water birth class which turned out to be just a video (total rip-off). My husband and I were from Manhattan KS, and had to commute 2 hours for appointments, etc. (this was the only birthing center near us). The day my water broke my Midwife did not allow me to labor in their Center. I was forced to LEAVE in despite of having contractions AND a ruptured membrane. When I called and told my Midwife my contractions were getting closer and stronger, she told me to get a hotel room and wait -- she claimed she did not believe I was really in the final stages of labor. An hour later, I was in FULL active labor, my daughters head was literally crowning! By the time my husband got me to the center, I was already to pushing . My daughter was delivered 15 minutes later. No water birth. No 'AMAZING' experience. There was absolutely NO reason for me to miss out on my water birth experience. I literally had my "laboring experience" in the Mall (yes they told me to go to the mall and walk around) and asked us to get a Hotel room the; a room we spent $100 on and didn't spend more than 1 hour in the room. To make matters worse, they served me a "full microwaved-type breakfast" around Midnight (30 mins after giving birth). I was too exhausted, and too weak to eat anything. The next morning (when it was actually breakfast time) I was very hungry and asked for breakfast. The lady (can't remember) told me that only "one meal is served and If you want to eat again, you need to ask your husband to go and bring you food from the outside." I was wondering if they had issues with "colored folk" or something because I couldn't wrap my mind around this kinds of treatment. Nothing was 'incredible' about my Birthday aside from seeing my healthy beautiful baby who is now an active five-year-old. This was my third pregnancy and this Midwife should have known that women who have had multiple births can have very quick labor progression. And in my case, I did. It was heartbreaking. I felt that I would have had a much better experience in a Hospital. I'd NEVER recommend this place ! Five years later, I'm STILL very Angry and regret not consulting with an Attorney after such horrific experience. read more

I had two of my babies at New Birth Company. Kelly and Cathy delivered my first together (because I was laboring very quickly) and Justine delivered my second via a water birth. Both of my babies were over a week late. I was very healthy throughout my pregnancy and they were diligent in checking on both me and my babies--particularly when I was late term. I am convinced that had I been working with a traditional hospital, I would have been induced earlier on when my babies were not ready to be born. Because I was able to wait it out, my babies came with no intervention and were relatively easy births. This is what I wanted--to follow the cues of my body and my babies to have them when they were ready (given we were both healthy, of course). I always had my questions answered--and I had a lot of them at times! The classes were great. Sure, sometimes it involved lots of reading from powerpoints, but compared to classes in the community--the information on care for pregnant moms, after-care, and breastfeeding just isn't taught in the same fashion at many places. They also empower you to be in control of your own birth process and encourage you to have support ready and available--be it a friend, parent, or partner. No--this place is not for you if you want a more hands on approach and with more traditional medical features. They do only what is necessary and not any more--taking "do no harm" very seriously. For example, you will not get multiple ultrasounds if they know your baby is growing and there aren't reasons for concern. They know that multiple ultrasounds *may* pose a risk to babies. Therefore, they don't do it unless they NEED to do so. If you're looking for a safe and nurturing environment to have a baby with minimal intervention--I think this is the best place in the KC area. I also continue to go here for well women's care and it tops any other OB-GYN appointment I've had. The midwives always listen and trust you as an expert of your own body. I am also not a religious person and did not find the mission work that 2 of the midwives (Cathy and Whitney) do on their own time to be troublesome. I did not have any experience where religious beliefs were pushed on me and we only knew about these practices through asking them questions about their start in midwifery. The cons I wish to add are that I could have been more prepared by the facility for going home following the birth. We were discharged 6 hours after the first birth and while my body was ready to do so--I think I was still emotionally in shock from a very fast labor and all of the changes! With my second birth, we were able to stay for 10 hours and this was much better for us--though we were also better prepared mentally. Due to space issues, it may not be possible to allow families to stay much past the average 6-8 hours. If that's the case, I think more preparation in the birth classes about what to expect would be helpful. Still--to be honest, I'm not sure I would have been able to sleep away from home much anyway--so it may have been a blessing in disguise. :) read more

I wish I could give this place less than one star,I will also include my contact info if you have any questions. I want anyone to avoid what we encountered. Newbirth Company sells you this crap package of peace and waterfalls and we are here for your natural births. This is a lie, their business model if "keep it cheap and bare bones healthcare" -We called our midwife and explain that water has broken and contractions are regular, she tells us to stay home and wait, if we had done this our daughter would have been born on the floor. (We arrived 15 minutes before the midwife did, she clearly had more important things to do with her evening, than do what she gets paid for. -We arrive and ask for a wheelchair (contractions were so bad, we couldn't walk) the nurse Marissa tells us that "we don't have wheelchairs, our mothers are healthy enough to walk in". -Their A/C was broken and they lied and said they "turned it down" when they knew well enough that it was out, later I spoke with their administrator and she said "Oh, well I see they made the call to have it repaired at 530 (we arrived at 3o'clock) try giving labor while pouring sweat. I had to instruct them to bring a fan in while my significant other's BP shot through the roof. -While helping significant other try to focus on contractions Whitney helps her rock her hips, from side to side, the abnormal part? The fact she is pushing her pelvic into the laboring woman's backside, while swaying. Significant other asked me later if this was normal, from my research, Whitney was being inappropriate. -Whitney was our midwife and everything you need to know about this "nurse" is in her profile, she went on mission trips and enjoyed working in 3rd world countries, that's great. But sadly, she doesn't understand the necessity of separating your work from your church, everytime we went in, she apparently forgot that she was in Overland Park and not in the Sudan. Strong overtones of trying to convert us and saying "God is your strength" after the delivery, taking away from demonstration of strength my, extremely strong lady just performed. She lacks confidence, she is condescending and clearly doesn't belong in the medical field. -THEY DO NOT HAVE A PROTOCOL FOR EMERGENCIES!!! I spoke with Jessica the administrator and asked why when Whitney and Marissa were bug-eyed while my significant other was excessively bleeding and they both even voiced "You are bleeding more than I am comfortable with" no transport was called. I then asked if they had transfusion bags/equipment at their location, she replied "No" I asked if "hoping for the best" was their protocol and she grew agitated and uncomfortable and raised her voice and starting attacking me. -Whitney and Marissa did not wash their hands ONCE, while exiting or entering the room, Whitney also used her bare hands to handle my partner's breast. (Jessica once again,when asked if this was appropriate health care, grew agitated) -Whitney and Marissa told us that we only had four hours after the birth until we needed to go home, this is a lie, Jessica a different nurse came in and said, "No, you can start here all night or at least 6-8 hours". (It became apparent that the people who informed us of this, had other plans for their nights and wanted us gone) Whitney literally handed us paperwork 5 minutes after our baby was born. The only good part of this experience was looking at our healthy newborn, I would not have taken time to write this, if all that had transpired was a broken A/C unit, I want people to see this establishment for what it actually is. I could have lost a loved one and it haunts me everyday, I shouldn't feel like we cheated death and I do. Life is precious, don't roll the dice with a company trying to cut cost in all of the wrong places, doesn't have protocols to hold them responsible. As I told their administrator "You can turn an ambulance around, you can't bring someone,I love, back to life." GO TO A REAL HOSPITAL! I can't begin to express how happy I am that I chose to have my baby at the New Birth Company. I had initially wanted to deliver in a hospital for the "just in case" emergency situations that could arise, but I wasn't convinced that I would be able to get the birth that I had envisioned at a hospital. I have many friends that wanted to do the least invasive, all natural approach but chose to deliver in hospitals and definitely did not get what they wanted due to hospital time limits, monitoring, other interventions, etc. I scheduled a tour at NBC and asked a ton of questions about their protocol in emergencies, etc. They do have procedures in place for mom and/or baby should either need more medical assistance than offered at NBC. Once I decided to be cared for at NBC I really fell in love with this place. Each person that I met embraced me in a way that I have never felt in any other medical care facility. It feels more like a home than anything else. I ended up having a very long labor and my contractions stalled out multiple times. I was exhausted and know that had I been in a hospital setting I would have been pressured to get an epidural or have other interventions to speed things along. In the end I had the most perfect birth of my son and I owe a great deal of my experience to my midwife, Justine Flory, and the incredible staff at NBC. Thank you for the perfect birthday! read more

I was really incredibly disappointed by our experience at New Birth Company. The facility is beautiful and modern, and the staff members do their best to be friendly, but they should not be in business. Sounds harsh, but it's true. A birth center is supposed to be the peaceful balance point between the freedom of a home birth and the safety and security of a hospital birth, but New Birth Company is neither. They have all the same compulsory procedures of a hospital, but without any of the medical expertise or consistency or security or options of a hospital. The office lost paperwork regularly; they even lost my wife's entire medical history twice. Worse, the midwife forgot who my wife was and introduced herself at every single prenatal visit. Speaking of which, the prenatal visits were worse than useless: other than hearing the heartbeat, the midwife made no attempt to discuss anything of importance with us. Any questions had to be raised by us, and the answers we got were vague at best and contradictory at worst. We were hoping for an experience with fewer pharmaceutical interventions....but sadly, this was not to be. My wife was prescribed completely unnecessary antibiotics during pregnancy -- antibiotics that the owner later told us she didn't need at all. They kept insisting on tests and then changing their minds afterward and saying that the tests weren't needed. The nursing staff was hit or miss; a few of the nurses could draw blood quickly and easily, but one of them consistently left my wife's arms covered with bruises. Worse, she insisted it was my wife's fault that she couldn't find a vein. The most ridiculous thing of all was the waterbirth class. We stated from the very beginning that we wanted to try to do a waterbirth, and this was acknowledged at every prenatal visit. It was only a month before my wife's due date when they notified us that we would have to take a class; it was "just their policy" and there was no way that we could possibly be prepared without their class (even though they had never mentioned it before). Then, after we signed up, they changed the date twice; the second time we were notified on the day of. After paying our entry fee and driving down, we sat for two and a half hours while the midwife read word-for-word from one of the worst PowerPoint slides I have ever seen in my life. It was just the same half-dozen facts that could be found on any website about waterbirth, but repeated over and over again in a different order. There was absolutely nothing in the class that could not have been explained in a single paragraph on a sheet of paper. My wife went into labor a week before her due date. Labor was progressing fairly well....except for when we went in. My wife felt incredibly uncomfortable with the midwife, and her labor stalled. The fact that the midwife insisted on doing constant checks (which weren't medically indicated and are actually a significant risk) wasn't helping matters. A pattern emerged: whenever we left the birth center, labor progressed; whenever we were around the birth center staff, labor stalled. The midwife did absolutely nothing to help other than badgering my wife to drink castor oil. We finally gave in after five or six hours; the castor oil made my wife throw up, but it did nothing whatsoever for her labor. Because my wife's water had broken the day before, NBC kicked us out that evening and we went to Shawnee Mission. The hospital birth was fantastic: even though it was a more formal environment, the staff was immediately helpful and friendly and respectful. The nursing staff there made us feel more at ease in five minutes than we had ever felt at New Birth Company. They kept us informed, respected our privacy, honored our wishes, and supported us as we had an amazing birth despite the rocky start at NBC. If I could give NBC zero stars, I would. It's definitely not worth it. read more

I love this place so much. It's way better than any obgyn office I've ever been to. I've liked every midwife I meet here and definitely want to use them when my husband and I are ready for babies! It's very clean inside, easy to find, and the atmosphere is actually very relaxing and friendly. Midwives are so much more personable and reasonable, at least in my experience, and are much more willing to be supportive of more natural solutions while not sacrificing any safety measures. I didn't deliver at the New Birth Company, but I attended their free breastfeeding classes, a couple's relationship class and I regularly go to the mom's groups. One of the star employees who keeps these programs running is Daniella. She is passionate about helping mom's with literally any issue, and she also does free car seat installs/checks. I first met Daniella at the breastfeeding class, and she offered to install my (future) son's carseat. The process involved filling out a short form and the install itself took about 5 minutes...free of charge! 8 weeks after this, my mom was driving my car with my son, Arthur, and had a collision, which totaled the vehicle. Luckily Arthur and my mom were both OK! There are so many things wrong with this place. I, like so many people, was lured in by the idea of a natural water birth and the nice rooms. If you want a water birth, have a home birth where you can get a big enough tub set up. The tubs are too small for most people to give birth in. Luckily, everything about the birth went well for me and I did enjoy the skin to skin time we had when she was born. They send you on your way after about 6 hours with far too few resources to deal with this new baby by yourself. However, the new birth company has no control over their office. They billed me for the birth and services instead of my insurance and it took months and many, many hours of calling then and my insurance befor the matter was settled. It was so stressful for me behind a new mom and dealing with everything else, to also have to be calling every day for fear that this would wrongly be sent to corrections and ruin my credit. They acted like it was my fault even though I gave them my insurance cards well in advance of the birth. They were very cold and didn't work with me at all. They are greedy. I recently called to try to get a copy of the supplements list I had received while I was pregnant for a friend who is now pregnant. The first thing they asked was if she was going to come there. I explained that she lived in a different state, but they said no because they care more about their money than whether when have healthy and safe pregnancies. read more

I had a great experience here. All of the medical providers here are knowledgable and professional, and I always felt that I was in expert hands. They give you the tools to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery: the rest is up to you. We had some billing issues (due to our insurance and not the center) but they never forced us to pay before going to an appointment. I'm so glad we went here. I have no doubt that there would have been unnecessary interventions suggested if we had gone to a hospital. This place is woman-centered and does their best to empower the mother during the whole process. Our baby is happy and healthy, and even though we still owe a large balance and will be struggling for the next few months, every penny was worth it. Natural birth is hard work, make no mistake about that. But, if that's what you are set on doing, I highly recommend new birth company. Also, I read an earlier review about Whitney pushing her own religious views during a delivery. I can only speak on my experience, but Whitney was the midwife on duty for me, and I didn't experience that. I respect everyone's religion. I happen to not be a religious person myself, and I never felt that anything like that was being pushed on me. Nothing of the sort was ever said. Whitney was supportive, and at times had to kick me in the butt (so to speak), but she did what she needed to do. My labor was tough and I lost a lot of blood, but we always felt safe and in good hands. Whitney and the two nurses on duty (Laura and Kristen I think were their names) were awesome. read more

(Overland Park location) I wouldn't recommend this place for first time moms. If you know how everything should go then go with them. I was a first time mom and got hoodwinked. They're all talk but no action. Pre-delivery they butter you up with all this 'we're better than doctors' propaganda. During actual delivery, however, anything goes. My delivery midwife (Christina Michael) was extremely incompetent. She had me laying flat on my back (a delivery position their own classes denounce). She was just silently sitting there, not coaching me, looking very bored while waiting to 'catch' tmy baby. I tore while giving birth and she didn't know how to stitch the tears (a basic medical procedure every midwife should know). So we had to wait 4 hours until the next midwife arrived, during which time of course I caught an infection since tears should be immediately stitched after delivery. The second midwife Eva did a horrible job with the stitching and told me, quite casually, I'd always have "a little piece sticking out"; all the while using me as a guinni pig to teach Christina how to stitch a tear. So I basically looked like I had two clitoris', one at the top and another at the bottom. My clitoris had also torn and they didn't bother stitching it together, lying it would heal on it's own. It didn't. I was still bleeding profusely, in lots of pain, and could barely walk when I was discharged because my post delivery 12 hours were up. The two midwives didn't give me any instructions on how to care for myself at home. Thankfully, midwife Kelly (the best they have) randomly walked into my delivery room. She saw me sitting, which I should not have been doing, and gave me care instructions. I went to the doctor's a week later since the pain was only getting worse and they were appalled and upset at the stitching done by the midwives. They were so caring and concerned (a female doctor, two male doctors and a female nurse), unlike the midwives who were distant and dismissive. And yes, it took that many doctors because my situation was really bad. It was quite the opposite experience since the birthing company preaches doctors, especially males, are cold and uncaring. Lies. When I explained my situation to the New Birth Company director to ask if they would cover further medical procedures I needed, her loving tone changed and she became very cold and 'professional' in her emails, obviously fearing a lawsuit. But I was more concerned about healing quickly to take better care of my beautiful daughter. It took me 3 months to heal and to be able to carry my daughter without feeling pain in my vagina. It took another 3 months for all my strength to come back. In conclusion, I emphatically do not recommend NewBirth Company at Overland Park. read more

I had the worst experience imaginable with them. They gave me the bare minimum care, did not attend properly to my medical concerns and needs. I fell severely ill with preeclampsia that went on for weeks (my baby and I literally could have died) without any attending midwife noticing because they never bothered to look at me physically, all they did was sit across a room and ask a few meaningless questions and then I was sent home again, extremely ill with uncontrolled nausea and depression. With what I believe was malicious intent, I was put through a painful series of vaginal and needle experiments. When it came time to test for diabetes, a typical test, they could not find a vein after multiple attempts, at which time Cathy came in and began stabbing my hand repeatedly with a huge needle to drain a drop of blood, meanwhile they had a blood sugar monitor with all the necessary supplies up in a cabinet and lied about having it. This is just a handful of examples... I would never recommend anyone go here, I'm happy that many moms have had a beautiful experience but I certainly would never refer anyone here. I hope it has changed since 2012. As you can tell I'm still enraged about my experience there and even more upsetting is finding more and more women who had an equally horrid experience. I feel so sorry that anyone else suffered after me. read more

Could not have asked for a better birth experience The Midwives at the New Birth Company are extremely competent, warm, experienced, caring, and invested. The office itself is inviting and removed from the hospital feel that is a turn off for me. The staff in total are all friendly, although the admin staff side is not always the most competent. Terrible experience dealing with the billing and front desk staff. This practice requires you to pay out of pocket your deductible prior to giving birth- something that they don't open explain to you, but rather demand payment when you show up for an appointment and tell you that you won't be seen unless you "pay your balance". I have no issues paying a legitimate balance, however not once could the incompetent front desk staff articulate why I had a balance (I have excellent insurance so suddenly having such a large balance was a surprise to me). I paid my balance and upon my own inspection of a detailed receipt I discovered my insurance wasn't being billed for visits. Upon review of this with the very rude individual that handles the billing, I decided to change my care to a different practice and was thus owed a refund of what I had paid to this practice. Currently I'm waiting for my refund, which I have been assured is "in the mail" multiple times but has yet to actually manifest. When I call to try to seek resolution to my missing check situation, I'm told "ummm maybe just keep waiting, I'm sure it will come in the mail soon". So far my check was "mailed" 11 days ago and hasn't made it the 4 miles to my home from the clinic. I strongly urge you to stay away from this business as they attempt to hide their incompetence in a facade of "natural, loving, holistic care". These people are rude and not qualified to be running a business. Update: I was contacted by one of the owners regarding my original one star review and through our subsequent conversation my concerns regarding my missing refund was addressed and new check was provided to me same-day. The owner was polite and professional; she assured me that issues with staff members would be addressed and further training on addressing billing practices would be provided to staff members. We loved our experience here. I have friends who delivered here as well who loved it. The classes were informative, the space is beautiful and the staff super helpful. I felt safe and empowered. I felt that way because they have delivered healthy babies all over the world without our western conveniences and I knew I'd be in good hands. The midwives rocked. My husband was such a pillar of strength, calm and rational and open too. The billing was fine, the front desk staff friendly, the whole thing was great. We were aware of the emergency protocol and we felt very informed of everything going on. If we are so blessed to get pregnant again we will go back. It was the best day of our lives and we would totally encourage people to go there. read more

This place harassed me for payment months before the agreed upon date. This was right after the Grandma I was a caregiver passed away. I had to unexpectedly find a new place to live. When I finally did go into labor they told me there is nothing they could do and wanted me to try to nap with contractions 2 to 3 mins apart then drive to a different state if they don't stop in an hour. 30 mins later I realized I was in transition and called them to let them know I was going to closest hospital so they could send records. They did nothing did not even have my file up to date. I had my baby 10 mins after arriving at the hospital. They showed up a couple days later to give me additional appointments with their office. A month later I'm still waiting for over $5000 I prepaid them to have my baby. They were not there for me when I needed them most. All they want is your money. You're better off going anywhere else. read more

I am disgusted at how I was treated by NBC. I learned that the army planned to move my family to the area when I would 34 weeks along, so I began to talk to the clinic when I was 14 weeks pregnant. I was told my arriving so late would not be an issue, and they agreed to work with me. When I was 22 weeks along I called the clinic to update my information with them, and received a phone call back the next day from the receptionist telling me the midwife advised I did not gain anymore weight. ( I had gained 30 by then.) I thought this was odd because the midwife had not seen me nor my medical chart; I hadn't even spoken with her myself, so the advice seemed ill-informed for my individual situation. When I made a special trip from TN just to see the clinic the month before our move I was again told everything was in order. But a few days after my first appointment at 35 weeks I received a phone call and was told that I had gained "too much weight" (I had gained 50 lbs), and that I "probably had gestational diabetes" (even though my glucose tolerance test came back normal), and "someone my size might have difficulty birthing naturally" (I am not obese by any definition). Throughout my pregnancy all of my tests had come back compealty normal, and I was having a very easy and uneventful pregnancy. I am a recovering anorexic so the fat shaming was especially distressing, and sent me into a few days of relapse into obsessive compulsive behavior concerning my weight. And being turned away, over the phone, at 36 weeks pregnant after just moving halfway across the country was even more distressing. As I wept and pleaded to the woman I spoke with, I was given what sounded like a standard mechanical response, as if she was reading from a rejection letter and not speaking to a real person, with fears and feelings. I was referred to a male doctor, whom I met with once, but he made me uncomfortable because I also have a history of sexual abuse...something that they would have known and respected had anyone there ever taken the chance to get to know me instead of just looking at me like a collection of numbers. I decided to contact a homebirth midwife who agreed to see me despite the late notice, and when she received my medical records from NBC it read that I "went against medical advice and refused to work with the doctor" they referred me to. (I also had to make several calls just to have my records sent, because everyone I spoke with "forgot" about it.) I am still unsure how NBC received that information from the doctor, but I assume my confidentially was not respected; after they sent me away and referred me to someone else they had no right to know what I did after that. I went on to have a successful and very rewarding birth experience with my homebirth midwife, but I am still reeling from how I was treated by the clinic. Instead of being empowered and respected regarding my pregnancy and birth wishes I was insulted and neglected. I regret the day I ever contacted them. I can only hope that I am the only woman who has been so horribly disrespected by them, but sadly, I doubt it. It was a very vulnerable time for me, as for any woman, and they were very careless with me. read more

I was very disappointed by new birth company. They have a good philosophy but it's a shame it's not put into practice. Every appointment was impersonal and the midwife would stare at her laptop 50% of the time. I only had a repeat midwife 2 times I believe so i never saw a familiar face. They claim they do this so you don't have a stranger at your birth. Well, the midwife at my birth I met one time a week before delivering. And a week after delivering I saw her in the lobby and waved at her and she ignored me. I was never asked about my birth plan and when I brought it up they seemed annoyed and asked me what I wanted. I explained my wishes only to be laughed at. Literally. I left my last prenatal appointment in tears. During labor I had excessive forced cervical checks against my wishes. The notes that were taken during my birth state I was "visibly shaking" during the checks yet they continued to do them, even with my waters already broken which GREATLY increases chances of infection. I felt the staff was annoyed with my slow progress despite me feeling pretty good in my labor groove. They did nothing to protect my perineum and I tore badly. 30 min after birth I was told "pee or I'm putting in a catheter" , that bluntly and without any compassion. They could not address the tear and had to call in another nurse from a hospital and took me from my baby 40 minutes after delivery to be stitched up. My husband was left with the baby and I was alone for stitching. All midwives attending insisted I have a shot of pain meds which I tried to refuse but they kept insisting and I had no one to advocate for me in a vulnerable position. I was then given a shot that made me so drugged I could not walk well and was drugged for the next hour or so with my baby. This was devastating after going through a drug free labor to enjoy those "golden hours" that were not respected. If you do choose NBC hire a doula as you will need someone to advocate for you. Do not expect that bc they are a birth center that you will receive gentle, evidence based care. I would not recommend NBC and am planning a home birth with my next. read more
