I found her on Yelp, and she came with raving reviews. I went to her website first and fell in love with her work. I called her, we chatted about what I was wanting, and she quickly said let's meet over coffee, so we can discuss more and make sure we both want to work with each other. Perfect. During our meeting, it was all about me. We went through sample photos. We talked more about outfits, and what I had envisioned doing. Went over pricing (she emailed previous to our meeting). She discussed setting up a private Pinterest account, so I could show her ideas of what I wanted. I never felt rushed. I knew she was the photographer I wanted to work with. So, I picked a date. With that, came my first assignment: pick several outfits, and then we meet again to look over them, discuss, and she would provide suggestions. This way, there is no scrambling on the day of the shoot. We met again at the studio, so I could check it out and go over the outfits. She made excellent suggestions and even made suggestions on where to purchase the items in expensively. On to assignment #2. The day of the shoot: I arrived at the studio, the hair/makeup artist started working her magic, there was music playing in the background, and Kara sat and visited. We had a blast getting ready. After hair and makeup were done, the artist left, and the shoot began. Just me, Kara, and the camera. Kara made me feel so comfortable and so beautiful. She made great suggestions for poses, props, and smiles (or not). The time flew by! During the several weeks prior to the shoot, I would text Kara with questions, send her pictures for suggestions/thoughts, and she was always quick to respond. She truly worked for me the whole time. Not just the day of. The unveiling of the photos: my boyfriend and I met her at the studio for the unveiling. We sat with Kara and went through all the photos and had narrow it down. This experience with Lumalia was transformative in ways I can't begin to explain…read more Before attending Blooming Caverns (the camellia-themed women's retreat), I felt very disconnected from my body and craved deeper friendships with more women. I believed that friendships take a very long time to deepen but during the retreat, it didn't take much time to realize that wasn't true. I felt connected to the other women I met there in a way more profound way than I've experienced before, thanks to Lumalia's guidance through somatic movement, guided meditation, and intention setting, letting my body flow and express while being witnessed and mirrored by another beautiful soul. I felt truly seen and like I was seeing the person in front of me in all her beauty: joy, sadness, longing, contentment, anger, curiosity, hope. All emotions were welcome. Lumalia's poetic guidance led me through an array of emotions I was able to express through free movement while being energetically held by the woman in front of me as well as collectively by the group and Lumalia. After the somatic movement part, we had a photoshoot where Lumalia captured us individually as well as interacting with each other with similar prompts to what we'd been doing during the movement practice, which made it INCREDIBLY comfortable to be in front of the camera. I can say this with zero hesitation: I've never been more comfortable in front of a camera than during this retreat. I'm usually shy and awkward and don't know how to pose so I end up making silly faces, but the purpose of these photos isn't to look any specific way but to embody the feelings we were working through, reclaiming our power as women and letting go of the good girl template society has programmed most of us with. The photography part is an amazing complement to the work we did during that evening and one of the aspects that make Lumalia's retreats unique. I left the retreat feeling so supported, so connected, so powerful, so calm, and at peace. The even cooler part for me was that in the days after the retreat, I was able to still tap into some of the feelings we explored during the retreat and bring them back into my body to overcome a specific blockage I was experiencing in my relationship. Very powerful stuff! I'd recommend this experience to any woman living in Oregon who's looking to get back in touch with her body, her power and could use some support in her self-love and self-acceptance journey.
