I called in here while…read morewith a friend who was working in Whitefield, with this being one of the few places to eat I could find which I knew would offer a gluten free choice for myself, having had some awful experiences at Pizza Express in the past, I came in not expecting anything too spectacular but I was pleasantly surprised with this branch, and I'd even go as far to say this branch sets the example which Pizza Express stores need to follow. One of my biggest problems with Pizza Express is the gluten free pizza base, I've ordered it on numerous occasions now and been disappointed with the quality, as it does come in frozen but I did quite enjoy my pizza from here. The service from the staff was okay, it was a little slow in getting my food however one person who impressed me the most was the chef - He was working on his own and even spoke to me as he was cooking, making sure he got his food right, he was telling me how long it would be, when he was putting food in and even shown my my pizza before he put it in as he wanted to make sure he had put the right amount of toppings on, having asked for less spinach and no olives, he also put extra cheese on which was nice, spread across the whole pizza and also made the egg quite well, it was a runny egg which was great on my Florentina. For my starter, I ordered the gluten free dough balls, which are normally my favourite part of Pizza Express, and for my main I of course ordered the Florentina Pizza, there was certain parts I didn't enjoy, perhaps where was a little bit more cooked than the rest or where the Milano cheese had gone, but overall my pizza was okay. This place also accepts Tastecards so you can get 2-4-1 on your food between Sunday and Thursday, however I was able to use a free main meal today which was given to me by Pizza Express to re-store my faith in the brand after a bad experience at a different store, which I must stress was not a payment to write a review, this was actually the second time I had the coupon having had an awful experience at the branch close to the Midland Hotel in Manchester, who just told me to "use it next time", so there is an on-going quality issue with Pizza Express especially with the Manchester branches (my home town), which I'm used too, which is therefore why I feel this branch sets a huge example for the rest in terms of quality and service, with the friendly, sociable chef also doing a fine job. I feel this place deserves a four star rating because it is one of the better places to eat in Wakefield and probably my favourite Pizza Express branch, improving waiting items and perhaps making the pizza closer to perfect and offering a better choice of gluten free sides than either coleslaw or salad would be a good idea in the future to consolidate the four star rating, at the moment I feel this branch is towards the lower end of the 4 star ladder.

Now some things, you think "it's too good to be true", but in this case, the food was excellent! We went during the week at lunch time, and it was fairly quiet so we had the pick of seats. Although the wine was included in our deal, we decided to order Fanta to drink. Now they didn't have Fanta, so the waiter decided to concoction his own version.Fair play to him for trying to please the customer, and what came to our table was fizzy water with orange flavouring. It was ok! For starters we had the "Spicy king prawns with garlic butter and white wine sauce served with bread" and "Crispy salt and pepper calamari served with garlic lemon and herb mayonnaise", which were both very nice starters, but as you would expect, portions were on the smaller side, but still very enjoyable. For main course we both had the fillet steak (medium rare), with the "Roasted new potatoes with rosemary and sea salt". The steak was really well cooked and the roasted potatoes were abit bland, and couldn't taste the rosemary, but the steak was more than enough the attention grabber. The service was good, and the waiter ensured we had a good experience, but without being too in your face so to speak. Elysium is well worth a visit if you fancy something more up class and you want to pay for it, but then again, there are always vouchers to be used!!

The calamari starter, although rather a small portion, was crisp and fresh. The pizzas were authentic thin, crispy and stone baked with quality toppings and the calzone was generous and suitably 'squidgy'. All but one of the staff were friendly and approachable and the manager was a delight. Elysium loses one star for just one waitress in particular. Just the one but it goes to show how one person giving a poor impression can so seriously affect the dining experience. She huffed, she snarled, she plonked things down on the table and walked off without a word, she quibbled at us as if we were an irritation getting in the way of her life. We were merely 3 mates out for a quick pizza, quite what offended her I cannot say but we were not welcome. Having worked in this industry for so long I can genuinely say it was the worst service I've had. I've seen mistakes, I've seen distraction and I've seen cackhanded incompetence that happens to us all from time to time.....and these are nothing if handled with a smile and some genuine warmth. Having finished our meal and asked for two bills (more huffs and quibbling) our change was slammed on the table and this little treasure stomped away. Not even a goodnight or please come again. Nope. A quite literal I am done with you now get out. I decided to tell the manager- the food was delicious and all but this one person was bringing the place down. He was surprised and genuinely apologetic, his response is the reason I would go again. His waitress is the reason I wouldn't have, had I not talked to him. She may well be 'studying the law' and normally fine but she will lose you customers and that will lose you money....she needs re-training in basic manners and she needs it now. Two of our party were having a Groupon deal and although the food really really was very good we felt throughout that we were singled out as 'Groupies' and that took the shine off. The glasses of wine we had paid for in the deal were half of a 125ml glass, so that felt like false advertising. The 2 for 1 for the main was fantastic but the overall atmosphere was quite a lot 'Oh, you have a voucher.' Groupon is the perfect way to impress new clientele. Yes you lose a little from giving a deal but it's a chance to tempt in someone who may otherwise not come along, surely it makes more business sense to sweep them off their feet? This was the 2nd Groupon I'd had last week and if you read my review for Brasserie Forty 4 you can see how it should be done- I don't use Groupon because I'm 'cheap' I use it to try new places. Brasserie Forty 4 spun me around, showed me all the sights and won my repeat business not just for the immediate future but the long term too. I will eat there, I will take my friends there and I will recommend it to everyone. I will recommend the pizza at Elysium but the experience was just not comparable. In conclusion then, if you are a pizza fan and want delicious/crispy/authentic fare then Elysium is very well worth a visit, if you are using a Groupon deal I couldn't in good heart recommend it.

It was late, I still hadn't been for a shop and I was starving. Having already perused the Just Eat menu I was aware that I only needed to spend the grand sum of £6 for free delivery, so I brought up the menu and coerced my housemate into getting involved. We both chose a burger, for me the standard with cheese, my friend the stringy meat burger with cheese. I know, the stringy meat burger really doesn't sound appealing, but I was assured that it was lovely. There are some creative options, such as Thai style - with smoked tofu and chilli sauce - so more than just the average burger is available. They each came in at just under four quid, and for that we got an entire portion of home made chips (which, strictly speaking were more like wedges) so there is no need to order in an extra portion as we did! And of course these wedges/chips deserve a special mention as they were delicious! Now, to the meat of it. The burger itself was middling - way better than your average fast food establishment. A lovely soft seeded bun, more akin to a lovely sandwich roll than anything else, which was really nice. It came packed with fresh salad and in spite of travelling from Hyde Park it was still rather warm. The meat itself was seasoned nicely and the burger was more of a flat large patty than a juicy BBQ style burger. Whilst it was really enjoyable, it wasn't quite excellent - I wish it had been a touch juicier and the small amount of cheese I had wasn't melted, which was a shame! However, there are three reasons to give four stars. Although the burger wasn't everything I've been dreaming of, the chips were delicious. I also ordered a Toblerone milkshake (I forget what it's officially called) and it was amazing. So tasty and creamy and perfectly blended, so there were no annoying chunky bits to distract from the shake. It tasted like liquid chocolate, but somehow sweet, light and beautifully frothy. Delicious! On top of that their delivery dude was the nicest, most friendly delivery guy I've encountered. Rather than shove everything my way and shoom off he greeted me with a huge smile, asked how I was and said he hoped we enjoyed the meal! I know it might be overkill, as it took all of 30 seconds, but really that kind of happy service was unexpected and most welcome. Props to him, it's lovely to have someone so friendly give you your food! So, all in all, I'm a fan. And at a minimum of £6 to spend in order to get delivery, it's pretty much a win win situation. Since I don't often go to Hyde Park I'm not sure I'll ever have the chance to eat in, but order in I shall. If for nothing else but the delicious milkshakes...

This might be a problem if the food didn't match the surroundings, but thankfully it does. For starters, I had a 'small' portion (it was still huge) of flawless spaghetti bolognese, followed by a gorgeous chicken breast in mozzarella and parma ham, and topped it off with a fairly indulgent warm chocolate fudge cake. Each course was top-notch, as was the service (most of the waiters are Italian, and most of the waitresses are mighty fine), and my party ended a fine evening by each ordering a ridiculously large cocktail, which are like Bibi's in a nutshell: huge, tasty and glitzy. Of course, on the price spectrum, Bibi's is towards the expensive end, but, for the food, service and twentieth century Italian-American experience you are given, it's more than worth it.
