Note: We had a budget, gave him the cost of all our appliances, cabinets granite, etc. in ADVANCE of him even starting. After we were told that he would be on/work on the job site every day and we would be the "main" project it turned out for not. He was hardly ever on the job site, things were built torn apart and rebuilt many, many times. We even told him to NOT pull out a header for our master closet (hey it's a closet!) to save $$ and his supposed foreman did it anyway! (his foreman is no longer an employee either) I took photos throughout to document the many issues. When we told him we would not pay for things being redone and redone, he pulled his workers off the job! After negotiation (we needed it finished and no other contractor really wanted to jump in after so much work had been done because they would have to assume any liability) we finally got out "final" even though things were not finished and some of the sub had done shoddy work (painters). We just were fed up and cut the tie. Over the year project, the carpenters would come and go. It seemed he could not "keep" an employee. We even paid him in advance one time to "help" him out a little. In addition, he has a horrible reputation with many sub contractors in our area that I have spoken with personally. (plumbing, glass company, etc) To add insult to injury, he put an illegal lien on our house (the work was not completed yet). We had no problem as we hired an attorney, had photos and documentation but it cost us $$ and time. We will never use him again or give him a referral.

What began as a simple project just kept growing. We have a 1928 Spanish bungalow that required some major plumbing work. Daniel updated the main, plumbed a bathroom, replaced corroded drains in the second bathroom that were causing major issues (of which we were not aware of and saved us from a HUGE problem in the near future). Some electrical rewiring was updated in the basement. YAY! Within 1 week, the main and most of the plumbing is brand new with quality materials. Our basement is gorgeous! Miguel and Daniel constructed a new ceiling with all the plumbing hidden providing more height (raised the pipes), recessed lighting, additional light switches (modern with a remote), excellent carpentry, crown molding, created a finished storage closet which includes shelves for easy access, a new door jam and door with updated lighting within and added some special touches for ease, convenience and a curved ceiling to match the charm of rest of the house. Hector joined the team to do a detailed paint job. A lovely vinyl floor was placed to finish off the project. There were so many other things done by a professional, remarkable and talented team. Highly recommend Galvan's for professional and expert work. We shall be contracted Miguel for future projects to be certain. Our job was to remove existing linoleum and replace with tile including a tile baseboard in the kitchen. He was very thorough and removed several layers of linoleum, replaced soft boards, and replaced hardi backer board throughout. He took no shortcuts in the job. Grout lines are spot on, he went under all the appliances, and installed matching schluter finish. He moved and replaced all of the appliances and touched up the paint and matched as needed. We had a large redwood deck in back of our house in Scotts Valley…read more After 25 years of baking in the southern exposure, the wood was starting to break down. When a board broke on the deck a couple of months ago, we decided it was time to replace the deck, rather than spend money patching it. We knew it would have to be replaced eventually, so even though it was a large expense, we decided to go ahead with it. We thought we should go with a synthetic material like Trex or TimberTech that could withstand the intense afternoon sun. We decided to get two bids: One from Luke and his partner Jason McKay of J-Craft Builders in Aptos, whom we knew from a small job Jason did for us five years ago; and one from a Scotts Valley contractor who we know locally and who did some major carpentry work in our front yard last year. Luke and Jason's bid was 20% lower than the other bid, a difference of $6,500. We visited decks built by each contractor. Jason personally showed us a deck he and Luke had recently built in Watsonville. We thought their work was somewhat better than the other contractor's. The reason for the much lower price from Luke and Jason is that they recommended a previous generation of TimberTech, while the other bidder recommended the newest, much more expensive version. Luke explained that the new TimberTech is slippery, so he prefers the older version. Slippery is a big concern for me, since I have elderly parents and my wife and I plan to grow old in this house. Of course, Luke and Jason would have made more money by using more expensive material. The other contractor said he liked the new TimberTech because it is guaranteed not to fade. He suggested we use a brown TimberTech that looks like real wood. Jason said the older TimberTech will fade. He advised using gray, because he said when the brown TimberTech fades, it turns pink, but when the gray fades, it just turns lighter gray. Luke and Jason built us a beautiful deck, with impressive attention to detail. It is bigger than our previous deck and we are getting much more use out of it. He and his crews built us a fortress of a replacement home. It is as sturdy and well built as can be. * Stuart had a house designer and an engineer lined up for us. He worked well with his subcontractors to produce a superb result. He also helped us get some amenities installed beyond his original contract: a retaining wall, a large front walkway of pavers, and a paved driveway. * We paid Stuart in several parts, as the insurance company paid us. We lost our long time family home during the August 2020 CZU fire that destroyed 910 other homes…read more We hired Kriege Construction to build our new 1,500sf, 2 bed/2bath home. Given that the country was in the midst of the Covid epidemic with labor and materials costs in short supply and prices increasing, Kriege provided an estimate for the project. We had some design changes along the way and Kriege provided change orders for us to sign. Change orders included the change in +/- change in cost, as expected. Kriege uses software applications to keep track of project estimates, progress billing, payments and change orders, which we found very helpful for our records. Kriege had a good crew of carpenters as well as a good contact list of experienced subcontractors. We were extremely happy with Kriege, his crew and subcontractors and recommend them highly. I've read some of the other reviews here and can offer my viewpoint on them. I'm retired out of big project, Silicon Valley commercial construction and have heard stories from other CZU fire victim homeowners who have struggled with their rebuilds. And my primary takeaway is that this was the first time homeowners had to get involved with their insurance company, planning/building department, general and subcontractors and really lack the knowledge about the whole process and when things go wrong, they blame the contractor. We found Stuart Kriege an honest and caring person, always looking to steer us in the right direction. It's easy to blame someone else when you don't know what you're doing.
