I've done a lot of Pilates and tried a lot of different places... skip Groupon, Class Pass, and cheap group classes and go to Gold Line Pilates for private sessions. A big part of private lessons is about connection and rapport. The staff is really friendly and extremely competent (especially the owner Melissa), and everyone is genuinely interested in helping you to feel better, stronger, and happier. There are a broad range of teaching styles ranging from traditional to modern, from super beginner to super advanced, from relaxed and restorative to really challenging and goal-oriented. I've learned and benefited from different instructors in different ways. The hour I spend there is a highlight of my week as I'm laughing a lot, dedicating time to myself, and of course, working my butt off. The location is very convenient (right by Whole Foods!); there is easy free surface parking (kind of a big deal in this part of Pasadena!); and there's easy online booking. The best Pilates studio I've ever attended. I've had memberships at Club Pilates and used to receive private Pilates classes at Equinox. Melissa and her studio beat my prior experiences by far. Let me start by saying the classes are limited to 6 people at a time but sometimes there are 2-3 people- Feels as if you're taking private classes. Melissa is very educated in Technique and really targets the core which is why we all take Pilates. She's very encouraging and never makes you feel like you're not getting it-she will correct posses and takes her time explaining positions. This is exactly the kind of place I've been looking for! From the moment I walked in I felt relaxed and comfortable, to the point where I found myself lingering after sessions, just wanting to be in the space. How great is that, a Pilates studio you can't wait to be in! I've done a few Gyrotonic sessions with Erik Heger and am enthralled with both the work and his guidance. I didn't know what Gyrotonic was (friend recommended it) so I was hesitant, but by the end of the first session it felt like my head was floating on my body, a feeling of space in the spine. And Erik is so adept and finding the best way to speak to me, really make sure 'I get it' while doing the exercise, making sure I'm taking ownership of the movement. So it doesn't feel like I'm just taking orders. If you are looking to expand and strengthen, look no further. read more

Melissa is a great instructor who received her Pilates certification training abroad. She's quite experienced with Pilates and always challenges me during our workouts so that my abs always feel like they've gotten their money's worth after each session. I've been going to her for a couple of months now with some injuries and she's always been observant of my form and is conscientious of what she has me doing so I don't further injure or re-injure myself. The cherry on top is that she's also fun person to train with. Her Pilates studio is located on the second floor of a building right close to Whole Foods, which makes for convenient shopping afterwards. I love Gold Line! I take private lessons from Robyn once a week and she is without a doubt one of the best Pilates instructors I've ever had. She's friendly, knowledgeable, and caring. She learns which exercises I like, which ones I avoid (I hate planks), and which ones hurt my body so that she can personalize the experience for my body every time. She pushes me when I'm feeling lazy but always checks in to see how I'm doing and will mix it up if I'm not feeling something in particular. I look forward to private classes with her every week! Gold Line Pilates was my first-ever experience with Pilates. At first, I was just going to try out the studio along with others, but after my first 2-3 classes, I had absolutely no interest in trying out other places. Everything about this spotless studio is terrific, from the location (with parking!) to the equipment to the excellent instructors. Taking Pilates here is one of the best decisions I've made for myself (physically/mentally), and I always look forward to classes each week. Melissa is the best--smart, fun, professional, extremely knowledgeable, thorough, very thoughtful and caring. She always checks in with us before class to see where we are physically so she can adjust her class (or specific client's needs) if necessary. I'm so happy to have found Gold Line Pilates. I had lower back tightness and hip pain that sometimes kept me awake at night. I saw doctors and was told me that I had no injury or diagnosis, it was just "age-related." Discouraged. My physical therapist recommended Pilates so I went to a group class ---not a great experience. I decided to give it another try with Gold Line Pilates. My 77-year-old mother has been going to private Pilates lessons twice a week with the same instructor for several years and from afar, I've always approved of her staying active. When she underwent surgery recently, I returned to Pasadena to help care for her during her recovery. Wow, did I get to see firsthand how much Pilates has benefited her. Still groggy from surgery and loaded with painkillers, she easily got out of bed, handled the stairs and got into and exited the car with ease. We went for a walk just days after the surgery and when she tripped on a curb, she easily caught her balance and righted herself. I have only worked out with Ana, who is great! She listens to any concerns I have and chooses stretches, machines and specific workouts to work out tight or aching muscles. I always look forward to my workouts and ask Ana to to choose the days menu of exercises; she will incorporate any and all of your choice exercises as well. Melissa, the owner, always offers a welcoming hello as I enter making me feel wanted as like I belong. Lot's of smiling faces in the studio any given day which is always uplifting and most likely due to the positive attitudes of all instructors. Lot's of encouragement passed around which lightens the load of the most vigorous and difficult workouts. I have felt and seen a difference in my body and appreciate Ana continuously correcting me allowing me to workout with the best possible benefit. So very happy I found this studio. This place is the best. Melissa is an incredible instructor! As someone who did not know pilates when I first came to her class, she somehow taught a group lesson and found time to give me individual attention too, making sure I learned not just what to do but the proper way to do it. She starts every class by asking how everyone's bodies are feeling in order to make sure she can tailor the class to the group's needs and customize the exercises to make sure no one gets hurt. She is also an incredibly clear instructor--she doesn't presume you know how the machines work unless she knows you and knows your capabilities/experience. And now that I know what I'm doing, I have taken a couple of private lessons (which I HIGHLY recommend) and she is using that time to help me understand where my strength is and what needs to be built up. Honestly I have nothing but great things to say... if you are a beginner, she's great. If you are experienced, she's great. If you are an athlete, great. If you are not, great. When I stated working with Anna at Gold Line Pilates she was quickly able to find the exercises my body needed as well as the exercises I should avoid. I had been in physical therapy for 10 years and I wanted something new. I have significant spinal issues and sciatic/piraformis pain, and I've learned how important it is to keep my body moving. Regular private Pilates keeps my body feeling strong and minimizes my aches and pains. Anna's instruction is attentive and detailed, but still fun. It happily feels like we never do the same thing twice. The team at Gold Line has been very helpful when it comes to accommodating my fluctuating work and travel schedule which allows me to stay as consistent as possible. Wow, she is a total pro and did an extensive "pre-session" to become familiar with my exercise history and what my current fitness routine is. Abbey is a complete professional and an expert (I found out she has taught at international luxury resorts) in the field, although she is so warm and a great listener. She was really patient with me and explained things so thoroughly. I had an amazing workout- I was challenged to push myself in ways my current spin, cardio and lifting don't do. I was so happy with my session with Abbey, I had her work with my two children. She was able to scale things on a level that was understandable for them, and still make it fun and exciting.
