We searched on Yelp to see where we could have our late lunch in Ulm since it was our first time…read morehere, and we decided on this place as our #1 choice. We were not disappointed, and we really enjoyed our dining experience at this "Pretzel Tavern" overall. It was such a nice day (I have to mention here we were so ready to be in a warm sunny environment after a seemingly long and dark winter here in Germany), so we opted to sit at an open table in the open-air street dining area (photo). I tell you it was so good to be able to sit in the sun to enjoy our relaxing time and food. My brezel (namesake for this establishment) was very good. It came out of the kitchen very warm and it had pretty good amount of coarse salt crystals. Of course, it had just the right texture of chewiness. Schwäbische bratwürst (a.k.a. naked bratwurst) was a little on a bland side (as is often the case with this type [weißwürsts] of bratwürsts tend to be for the lack of spices and herbs), but the gravy it came with was excellent and saved the whole dish. Also, I would've preferred to had my Nürnberger bratwürst grilled a little longer, but they tasted very good nonetheless. Serving was very generous for the money (you'll be the judge from my photos). All the side dishes: bacon-fried potatoes, sauerkraut with bacon pieces (unique) and traditional potato salad were excellent. Of course, when you mix anything with bacon, you know, it has to be good. Service was prompt. I felt our server was a little abrupt, but she was very efficient. I thought considering Ulm being a part of Schwäbische culinary territory, they did Bavarian sausages pretty well. Their menu items are very extensive. Of course, some folks were simply enjoying bier und brezel in the afternoon. If you are in Ulm, you want to try this place if you like Bavarian or Schwäbische cuisine...only about five minutes walk from the Ulmer Münster. You can pay with credit card if you prefer...inside at the hotel front desk, otherwise you pay cash at your table as usual.

Not only do they serve endless half-liters of the excellent local beer, but the vibe is utterly, unmistakably Bavarian. The biergarten is huge, with dozens upon dozens of picnic-style tables that are expected to be shared with locals and tourists alike. Don't be shy -- everyone's here for the same reason, to enjoy the gorgeous view of Lake Tegernsee and the outstanding menu items. I ordered the schweinhaxe because, well, it's Bavaria. It was huge, tender, and delicious, and served with a decent side of potato salad. My tablemates ordered a pretzel which was clearly freshly baked and had all the classic trimmings. And all of us, of course, drank a few liters of Tegernseer Helle. And the prices are quite reasonable -- my dinner and drinks came to less than 20 euro. Service is quick and efficient, even when the restaurant is busy. Servers speak enough English to get the job done, and are friendly in that efficient way that Germans are known for, all while wearing the lederhosen that the tourists like me expect them to be wearing. A great stop for the absolute classic Bavarian experience.

So many that my friend Achim from Bavaria refers to them as the "Bavarian Embassy!" I have hit many Paulaner restaurants in Germany over the years, but this is one on my favorite spots, nestled in a little square under the trees and surrounding a nice water fountain. I come here on every visit to Stuttgart. I have actually hit this spot twice in the past year. The last time was during the World Cup, when I managed to get a seat next to the fountain with a perfect view of the TV. On the most recent occasion, I sat on the other side of the fountain. This place is usually bustling, and it is difficult to grab a table outside, but the staff always seem to accommodate me. I always order a nice, fresh and cold Hefeweizen beer, and even though I peruse the menu, I get the same thing- Schweinshaxe, or Pork Knuckle, they do it like no one else- it's ALWAYS consistently good, juicy, crispy, perfect. The last time I came with friends, this time it was just me, and I struck up a conversation with a local, such an enjoyable time, and happy to see the locals frequent this place. My mouth waters thinking of the food and I look forward to coming back again next summer!

I don't know what they were, but they were so good. It was chilly so it was the perfect meal. To end the evening, we ordered a dessert we've never had before called "Des Kaisers Liebling" which was fried dough with powdered sugar and some fruit compote. Again, it was good, but maybe wouldn't order again. I gave this place five stars for the service and how mom and pop the vibes felt.
