Incompetent and unprofessional are the two words I'd use to describe my experience with Yisrael Hannah and Golden Key Driving School. Let's start from the beginning. I booked their ten-lesson package, and from day one I knew something was wrong. My first lesson consisted largely of driving around the Dyckman Marina while the instructor was on the phone handling personal conversations. Unfortunately, this became a recurring pattern throughout my lessons. A significant amount of paid lesson time was spent listening to personal phone calls instead of receiving instruction, feedback, or guidance. The overall teaching environment was also unnecessarily unpleasant at times. Instead of maintaining a calm and professional attitude during lessons, the instructor frequently made sarcastic or snide remarks that added stress rather than helping me improve as a driver. Constructive criticism is expected during driving lessons, but there's a clear difference between professional instruction and dismissive commentary. Lateness was another constant issue. In almost every lesson, I had to wait for the instructor to arrive. Most delays were around five to ten minutes, but one incident was especially ridiculous. I waited approximately 30 minutes before being told by the office that the instructor was downtown and would not return for another two hours. I was advised to go home and wait for a phone call. Instead, I returned to the office myself later and found the instructor already there. Had I not taken the initiative, I strongly suspect my lesson simply would not have happened that day. Rather than apologizing for the inconvenience, the office blamed a surprise city inspection and dismissed the issue entirely. This pattern of avoiding accountability continued throughout my experience. After finally completing the ten lessons, it was time for my road test. My appointment was scheduled for 8:45 AM, and I was instructed to arrive at the school at 8:30 AM. That already seemed cutting it close, but I trusted the school's judgment. Instead, I spent around 40 minutes sitting in a car with other students before we were rushed to the testing site late. Because the vehicle was not present before 9:00 AM, the examiners refused to let me and another student take our tests. Again, instead of apologizing, the school blamed the DMV staff and claimed the examiners were under inspection by supervisors. Whether or not that was true is irrelevant -- it was the school's responsibility to get students to the test site on time. When we returned to the office, there was still no accountability. The office staff insisted "it wasn't our fault they had an inspection." The instructor himself gave me a half-hearted wave and walked out without even acknowledging the situation professionally. To their credit, they scheduled another road test for the following week and told me to arrive at 8:00 AM for a 9:00 AM appointment. I arrived early and waited until after 8:10 AM before leaving because no escort had shown up. At that point, I decided I was done dealing with this school entirely. The level of disorganization and lack of professionalism here is honestly shocking. I want to preface by sharing the following: I had zero experience driving before arriving to Golden Key, no knowledge how to adjust the side view mirrors, and how to turn a car on, but I was determined to pass my road test. I purchased the 10 lesson package because I wanted to give myself ample time and practice. Firstly, reserving lessons is tricky. After I got my permit, the only available days were two months ahead. I wasn't in a rush, so I didn't have a problem with this, but it's not convenient for some. Yisreal is patient and explains exactly what to expect during the road test. He will be very encouraging and express only positivity. When asking for his opinion on whether he believes you're ready for the road test, he asks you to feel it out yourself. At some point after the 5th lesson I felt my progress and was feeling more and more ready. I do feel there are some organizational challenges from the secretary's end but it's not extensive or negatively impacted my experience at all. Yisrael and Rosie were very kind and knowledgeable about the road test. I first did the 5 lessons package, but failed my exam the first time. Then I added 2 classes and took the road test again. They were super helpful, and I even made a buddy to take the exam with me again (we both failed the first time, but passed today!). Also depending on where you live, they will pick you up at your apartment/house for the lesson which is a nice perk. I took one star off because like other yelpers have mentioned the management is a little disorganized. I think they need to find a better way to organize and note scheduled lessons. There were many times Yisrael was late and confused with where he should be going (either office or my apartment). I used this school for refresher driving classes, so to start on a positive note, the instructors were great. They were knowledgable, patient and encouraging. Now on to Management: If I could give less than one star, I would. On Saturday, August August 11th, I was scheduled for a highway lesson @ 8 a.m. During my lesson, the skies opened up and there was a rainstorm so bad, I couldn't see 3 yards in front of me so the lesson was cut short. I was given a courtesy lesson of 20 minutes the next day,August 12th. Fine. I had a 20 minute lesson -- not enough time for a highway lesson. Ok. Whatever. I took my lesson and when I left the car I realized I had left my wireless headset (black) in the back seat. I immediately texted my instructor to let her know. She said she would let management know. The following Wednesday morning, August 15th, I again texted my instructor to confirm that she had found them because I hadn't heard back from the school. She replied saying that management knew about it. So I called the school and was told they had them. I said I would go pick them up. Because they close early, I couldn't get there before Saturday. Today, August 18th, I popped into the school and was told that my headset was still in the car and someone would bring them by the school and I should wait. What?? I waited 1/2 an hour. Meanwhile the receptionist is telling me that the instructors are not allowed to remove personal property; that they are to remain in the vehicle until they were claimed. Ok. I'm claiming it. While I waited the receptionist showed me a picture of pink headsets she received from someone who supposedly had found them in the car and asked if they were mine. I said "no." Then she said they were looking in another car. I was only in one car! She proceeded to tell me that customers should not leave personal items in the vehicles as if I left my headset there on purpose. Eventually, my instructor arrived and while I was explaining what was going on, a call came in from the owner, who proceeded to tell me that they will only hold personal items 4-5 days which is directly opposite of what the receptionist told me. Even with his fly off the cuff rules, I was within that 4-5 day "rule". By the way, the school does not have their "rules" posted anywhere. I never got my headset. Their management is sloppy and disrespectful to their clients. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY OPERATION THAT IS SO DISRESPECTFUL TO THEIR CLIENTS. DO NOT USE THIS SCHOOL. read more

They have 5 stars for a reason. After doing some research, I decided to go to Golden Key and take driving lessons. Being that I was a beginner I decided to go with the package that included 10 45 minute classes, 5 hour course & the road test. The cars they use are amazing. They don't have any flashy cones on top that shows the neighborhood that you're a "student driver". The cars are also fairly new & in tip top shape. All of the instructors are great. They make you feel comfortable and they prep you for what's on the road test. The main instructor Isreal gives you tips that are easy to remember. I actually heard his voice in my head while I was taking my road test haha. I saw a review saying that they talk more than they instruct which is not true. Yes, they do make conversation with students but it's all apart of the learning process. I actually appreciated conversing with instructors because now I feel comfortable maneuvering a car and holding a conversation. It's great practice! I took 10 classes and passed my road test on the first try. The instructors (Yisrael and Stephanie) are very patient and teach you everything you need to know for the exam. The owner (Yisrael) is very very experienced and explains every aspect that they judge during the test (left and right turn, stop signs, 3-way turn and parallel parking). I was very nervous on the day of the exam, but Rosie was very encouraging, she also drove us around the block where exam took place and gave us useful tips. Very unreliable. You have to wait outside their location (shuttered) for the teacher to pick you up, and when they are late or blow you off (both things happened to my kid) you're stuck out there. I was so nervous that I almost talked myself out of taking the classes. I ended up choosing the 8 lesson package, but I was ready for the test after five. The last three I used for practice. I was so nervous at the beginning of my first lesson that I walked to the passenger side door instead of the driver's seat. His immediate response to me was "I already know how to drive. This driving school will steal your money, and then insinuate that one is crazy for inquiring their practice methods. This school is a wife and husband operation therefore everything is questionable at best in terms of their business practices. Especially when it concerns them owing refunds to their customers. I would never recommend my worse enemy to to this school. People do your homework when choosing a driving school because many of these small driving schools are deplorable, teach only the bare mimimum regarding driving such as: 3 point turn, or parallel turn and very little driving skills for one to become proficient. There is much more to driving than the aforementioned, and a few measly lessons isn't enough for one to become really proficient regarding driving. Now, if one is fortunate to have access to a vehicle by a family member or friend which they can practice regularly than these loan shark schools. Then, sign up for a few lessons and take the driving exam because one must be extremely proficient when driving, bear in mind that vehicle is a weapon, peoples lives and your life is at risk when stepping into a vehicle bear that in mind, SAFETY is the Goal for everyone when driving. Fortunately, I learned more regarding driving on Youtube, and I attended numerous driving schools, about five to be exact, and all of them were sh#t. Also, I doubt if any of these small driving school instructors are certified, which should be the case which many of them don't possess which I came to learn. Furthermore, people do your homework as you would regarding anything you intend to learn regarding your life. Moreover, just as the aforementioned so call driving instructors request your permit you request their (certification card its a small white card with their stats) if they're unable to produce the aforementioned card run. So far, I've invested over ($2, 000) dollars on driving lessons, and still I haven't learned from these schools all the methods of driving. I taught myself the instruments inside the car, and learned what's under the hood of the car myself and had to pay someone to teach me, also the various tires which is necessary. THEY STOLE MY MONEY! Shady business practices. I purchased a package December 2019, then when 2020 rolled around my ENTIRE immediate family in Long Island fell sick sending my parents to the hospital. Spent weeks caring for them anyway that I could since I wasn't infected. My father died from Covid 19, so did my uncle, so I was sent in a MAJOR depression throughout last year into this year of 2021. I am trying my absolute hardest to be positive and get my life back on track since last year was the absolute worst. Israel is the best instructor in NYC! I have gone to many driving schools and never was I treated as good as in this school. He made me feel relaxed. I only took one class with them and the next day I had to take the road test and guess what? I passed it. Another thing I liked was the fact that Israel wanted to make sure I got the parallel parking and 3-point turn right, so he made me practice those at least 6 times!! On the day of the road test, Rosy was the one who drove me to the test site and gave me valuable tips on how to relax and what to do when the nerves roll in. She taught me that no matter what the outcome was, the test was not a life altering point in my life and if I failed it, it was not the end of the world. Its been a long time since i've gotten back behind the wheel; The last driver's school i've went to put a scare tactic on me so badly that not only i've failed my road test i've failed myself. At first, when i looked at all the positive reviews i thought it was one of those 'Too good to be true' Schools but i was wrong...this school is a one of a kind and that's a good thing! Rosie was the person behind the scenes, making the schedules and also telling you what to expect when it comes to the road test when she drives you to it; Sometimes I think she's superwoman cause she's multitasking so much it was awesome. Israel is one of those instructors that I've never seen before and that's speaking in volumes...he's calm, Kind, and is eager just as you to push for your license. He encourages you to do the best you can, he lets you know what you need to work on and to take it a step further he will use the power of repetition...meaning he will make you do a same thing until you feel comfortable in doing it whether its parallel parking, 3-point turns, or turns. And speaking of parallel parking; ladies and gentlemen if you are like me and you were afraid of those types of parking. Israel and Rosie have got you covered...not only by their teaching its SO EASY by the time of your road test you will be doing it with your eyes closed and then some. I have nothing but great things to say about Golden Key Driving School. I felt compelled to write a review. The staff is very nice to everyone and the driving instruction is awesome. The pricing is pretty good too compared to other schools. This school is not looking to take all your money and not teach you anything. The staff ACTUALLY wants you to succeed and takes pride in you doing so. This school is great for those who are timid, fearful, complete beginners and those who have had a previous bad experience with other driving schools (like myself). The instructors know exactly what you need to do to pass the driving exam. They will even show you tips and tricks to make your driving great. They will not rush or push you if you are not ready to take the driving exam. They are very patient with you until you get it. They run their driving school in the back of a barber shop, so don't be intimidated or freaked out when you pay them a visit. The establishment and staff is very small, but the service and end result definitely makes up for it. They are looking to expand, which is an awesome idea. First I'll explain my case, I've been driving for over a decade but I lost my driving privilege once my license expired (no vehicle, never renew). Make sure to mention if something is bothering you, and ask questions many questions so you are on the same page with him -He could be too chill at times, but he just really wants you to feel confident. You must try to learn what approach is best for you. -The 5 hour class was useless and started later than scheduled. I have a very busy life so that was not cool with me. Pros The driving instruction by Ysrael is really good. He is patient, shows you all that will you will need for the test and lets you fine tune the lesson as per your confidence level. For instance - you can tell him if you'd rather practice parallel parking instead of driving and that's exactly what he will let you do. Both the administrative assistant Rosy and Ysrael are friendly and approachable. Cons Very poor sense of time management. Each class I had to wait a minimum of 15 min for the instructor to show up. Before this driving school, I had never stepped foot into the driver's seat. I bought 10 lessons, and towards the 8th lesson I already felt confident on the road. I passed my driving test on the first try. Yisrael is a fantastic instructor. He stays calm throughout the whole drive and likes to crack jokes to reduce your stress. I just got my driving license and would highly recommend Golden Key Driving School. Yisrael is extremely patient and very good at figuring out the areas that you may need improvement.
