I had no behavioral issues when I was a child, with the exception of a smart remark. I simply needed structure. The school I was attending at the time for dyslexic children coddled me, and I was not prepared for high school at the end of 8th grade. I should say, this was nearly 40 years ago, and I may have worked with some other employees, but I did meet Amanda Mallory directly. Two or three boarding schools in Carmel and the central coast were recommended to us initially. They were not a great fit, but we were patient and knew it was part of the process of finding a good environment for me. Eventually I decided on an all boys, junior prep school in New Hampshire that offered the structure and encouragement I needed to take the next step in life. The type of school I needed was present at several schools in New England, but not California. My parents were nervous to send me across the country, but once we visited, it was a no brainer. We never would have found the school if it were not for Amanda. I remember a few things vividly from my appointments and interviews with Amanda. The first, which was unintended, was hearing Amanda tell my parents I was a normal, nice kid. That was comforting to hear when you are in the middle of a growth spirt, with braces, acne, a cracking voice, and do not feel like any environment fits. The second thing I remember is that Amanda asked me, while I was by myself in the interview, what I was interested in. She made it clear this was my choice ultimately. I wouldn't return if it wasn't any good. Assemblage (say it with a French accent to impress your friends) is, simply put, an art form where found objects, everyday articles and whatever you got are glued or screwed together to make freestanding sculptures or wall hangings. James' class is very low key and freeform. It's actually more of a guided workshop than a structured class. James brings in huge bins of junk, debris and discarded materials which might consist of doll heads, driftwood, electric appliance parts, photographs, toys, old telephones and what-the-heck-are-these-things. James supplies tools and glues. Many students bring materials from home. Then the students take the materials and put them together to complete their own masterpieces. There's a lot of "networking" that goes on between the students. It's fun to go around to the different work tables to see what the others are doing, and many times we offer suggestions or take advice from each other. I've stolen some of my best ideas from other students. James is very low key and non-judgemental but he has a subtle way of guidance that is always helpful and inspiring. He is a master of tools and adhesives, and he is a great problem solver when it comes to assembling art where a student is unable to figure out how to put something together or needs another eye to see what works best in the way of balance, color, etc. Besides being knowledgeable in the utilitarian side of things, James is an accomplished artist with a very strong vision of his own that is not forced on anyone else. On top of that he's a very likeable man. If you are looking for a very structured class with a teacher who has a definite agenda and a syllabus, I wouldn't recommend this class. If you're looking for a class that is freeform but has a steady mentor who is there if he is needed but is savvy enough to know when to stand back and let your creativity flow, then this is the one for you.

CCSF Fort Mason campus has changed my life... even that is an understatement…read more I first found out there was an art campus at Fort Mason from getting a CCSF flyer in the mail. Months later, I went to their annual holiday sale to see just what kind of art was being made there. The depth and variety is amazing to me given how, all things considered, the building is kind of small. City College only takes up two floors of building B. Painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture... it's all there. I'm one of those people that resorts to drawing symbols of stick figures when asked to draw a human. Now that I've been taking classes here, I can actually draw a person to their likeness. One of the best things about the Fort Mason campus is the incredible diversity it attracts in students. Obviously there is a lot of ethnic diversity, but it's the age diversity that is such a joy. I've literally had classmates ranging from 18 to 94. The range of ages adds so much to the classroom's energy. Everyone is there because they want to be there and they're all at different stages in their life. All this life experience elevates the work and it's inspiring for everyone working there. The teachers are great too. They make it such a pleasant, encouraging, and supportive environment. I was kind of intimidated when I took my first class. I had flashbacks to grade school and was worried I'd be the only one that didn't already know how to draw at least a little bit. My worry was for nothing. If you are thinking about taking a class here, do it!

Exploring the rooms will have you moving up and down among the floors of the house. So if you're here with family or a group, you might want to bring your cell phones to more easily figure out where each person is. In any case, once the food breaks out, sooner or later everyone can be found downstairs.

Unexpectedly, he has participated well in the class since the very first day, thanks to his exceptional teacher, Ms. Margaret, who has been so patient and has a wonderful way of drawing him out of his shell. After just two months at Sentence Center and now starting the new school year, he came home today and told us that writing was very easy for him at school. It was really exciting to hear that and to see how much he has already grown through this program! Every teacher who has taught my child has been exceptional, patient, and truly talented at working with kids. They have helped him learn how to come up with ideas, turn those ideas into writing, and share his work with the class. They make an effort to get to know each kid and their interests. They make the online format fun, including some chatter about personal interests during the zooms. They also reach out to parents and offer positive and constructive feedback about each child's writing. I was initially looking for an in-person camp but I think the zoom format actually works well for a writing camp. Each day has a specific theme and each participant has to read out their essay to the class. I believe my son's writing skills and confidence has grown due to this camp. This is a positive review for an in-person test at their testing center…read more Scheduled my exam through NASM. Called the actual testing center twice to ask about location, lockers, details. Customer service over the phone was prompt, informative and friendly. Arrived 15 minutes early. The parking lot was crowded but I found parking. The location is not convenient. Check-in started at the door when I was asked for my official government photo ID and proof of CPR, both of which I had. People stand at the entrance to the office and can line up into the hallway while doing the preliminary check-in. You immediately put all your belongings in a locker as soon as you enter the room. The lock is provided and has a number tag. It's a small locker but can fit a small bag/backpack. You turn off your mobile phone, and take off your watch. Liquids are placed on a shelf outside the lockers. There's a rack and hangers where you can hang your jacket. A staff person walks you through this entire process, one person at a time. There are two front desks where two people are doing official check-ins. You sit down until they call you to the front desk. The waiting room feels like a DMV or government office where all the seats face the front. After you do the front desk check-in you sit down again and wait until they call you. Then you get admitted into the testing room of cubicles with computers. I agree with one of the reviews that said that the computers seemed outdated. All that mattered was that my test worked without glitches. There was no fountain noise, as others have commented. I think they moved their office and it's no longer near the fountain. The restroom is down the hall and you are allowed a 5 minute break during which your testing clock still counts down, and you have to sign back in before threats of sanctions happen. I ran down the hall to the bathroom to make my 5 minute limit. The testing room was quiet although you can hear the air conditioning turn on and off. It was noticeable but not distracting. Ear plugs are provided. The room was cold. I had read the reviews so I made sure not to wear a hoodie or a shirt with pockets. I was allowed to wear my mask. I noticed that staff would enter and sanitize the cubicle after a test-taker had finished. The staff were friendly and helpful. The process seemed organized. There were no irate test-takers (or staff). I received my results immediately after hitting submit. I passed. I went to the front desk where they returned my government ID and a printout of my test results. It was a good experience.
