Kids are under so much pressure these days compared to when I was in school. Granted that was a…read morelong time ago but it is true. My daughter is in the sixth grade and pretty much a straight A student, except for math. She began slipping behind this past semester and was getting a C in math. This stressed her out far more than me however I convinced her and myself that we could tackle this together. That was until I learned the hard way that this common core BS it literally the most confusing math I have ever encountered. We gave it a week of me trying to teach myself and then her. And then another week of me getting absolutely frustrated. And then by the end of the second week I threw in the towel and started searching for tutors. Initially I was set on getting her a private tutor like I had done for my son 8 years prior. To my surprise and horror? Private tutors were running upward of $140 for an hour of in home tutoring. Ok. They make more than I do. I then decided that was insane and I switched gears settling on Sylvan at West Portal. The start up was pain free, she had her assessment and then headed full steam ahead with the small group math tutoring 2 days per week. There was only 2 months of school left, she had a C- in math going into it and finished the semester with a solid B. The best part of all was the confidence boost she got along with that B. The staff at Sylvan were friendly, easy to communicate with and never tried to push packages on us that we didn't need. Her assessment was so helpful in that it picked up area's where she needed help that she didn't know she even needed help in. The prices were very competitive and although I was hoping to get her the 1:1 tutoring I was limited by the cost and reassured that she would likely do just as well with the small groups. They were correct. There was not a single tutor that Lily did not click with. They were all patient and kind providing updates along the way with her progress. It was all around a great experience and she will definitely return for the math homework group in the Fall. I would recommend Sylvan to anyone who's child is falling behind in a subject and needs a boost. The money spent was well worth it and my girl went into the summer feeling great about herself and her grades.

Toxic Leadership and Systemic Mismanagement - No structured onboarding, training, or role-specific…read moreguidance was provided, despite the complexity of the product and the specialized K-12 market. Leadership placed responsibility on employees for gaps that stemmed directly from the CEO's failure to provide training, support, or direction. CEO demonstrated disengagement and unprofessional behavior, including openly stating in a group meeting that he had "been checked out for the past few months." Frequent lapses in professionalism during internal meetings, including leaders appearing distracted, unprepared, or eating on camera. Meetings were routinely late, canceled without notice, or scheduled last-minute, including pipeline reviews with 30-45 minutes' notice. Lack of predictable scheduling made it impossible to prepare effectively for key responsibilities. Expectations for late-evening "check-ins" (7-8 PM) demonstrated disregard for boundaries and work-life balance. Requests for support were delayed, inconsistent, or ignored altogether, making it difficult to meet expectations that were never clearly defined. Systemic leadership issues created an environment with limited structure, inconsistent communication, and no accountability. Success was made nearly impossible due to the absence of training, clear expectations, and reliable managerial support, yet employees were still blamed for outcomes beyond their control. Advice to Management Begin by taking ownership of the leadership responsibilities that come with your title. Employees cannot succeed without training, structure, or guidance, and deflecting blame onto staff for gaps you created is both unprofessional and unsustainable. If you expect performance, start by providing the tools, knowledge, and support necessary for employees to do their jobs. Create a real onboarding process. Establish consistent expectations. Schedule meetings in advance. Show up prepared. Demonstrate the professionalism you expect from others. Most importantly, reevaluate the culture of disengagement at the top. When the CEO openly acknowledges being "checked out," the entire organization feels that neglect. Accountability begins with leadership, and until that changes, no employee--no matter how talented--will be set up for success.

Carla was incredibly professional and responsive from the very start. She answered all my questions and provided detailed information right away, making the entire setup process smooth and stress-free. The tutoring sessions are held via Zoom, and Carla (or sometimes one of her team members) works one-on-one with your student, accommodating your child's schedule. What really stood out to me is how much care they put into understanding what your child needs. The approach is highly personalized, with a clear goal of setting students up for long-term success. It's also very clear that Carla is passionate about what she does--and based on both my experience and the many other glowing reviews, she's also truly excellent at it. My only regret is not finding this service sooner. Bottom line, highly recommended.

Once he started elementary school, his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Chavez mentioned that he needed additional support. At that time, they did not know what the issues were. My thoughts were that he was too young for the grade but having a twin sister and she was advanced, I could not hold him back one year. My son struggled in school until I met Shannon Mulligan, owner of Marin Tutors. From the very beginning that I asked for help, Shannon took the time to provide the support that my son needed always paring him with excellent tutors that were compatible with my son's personality and their teaching techniques were always easy for my son to understand those math equations. Marin Tutors were common to see them at home, once or twice a week, every time that I came from work. From elementary school, up to his Senior year. Aidan recently graduated from San Rafael High School, Class 21, and he was accepted at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. In August, my husband Bradd, Aidan, and I drove to Las Vegas to settle him at the dorms of UNLV. It took us a few days to help him settle in his new stage in life, College. While we were helping to settle Aidan in his dorm, he expressed his excitement about his new college life, and he shared with us: "I can't believe that I am here right now, it is pretty exciting"... That really touched me, because automatically I went back in time, to those moments where he was filled with frustration for not being able to understand his math problems, all those moments that he felt "something was wrong with him" and being rescued by all those hours of tutoring with Marin Tutors. The truth is, that he is where he is right now, at UNLV thanks to Marin Tutors. He could not do it, or I could not help him (the math of nowadays is not my strength) without the help and support of Shannon Mulligan and all her excellent tutors that spent time with my son, one on one. To Shannon Mulligan, Marin Tutors, and all those college students that joined Marin Tutors thru the school years of my son, thank you for all your time, dedication, passion, patience, and knowledge. Thank you for all you contributed to helping my son Aidan. We would always be so grateful about it, and you would always be a part of my son. I guarantee you that!... Marin Tutors and Shannon Mulligan are simply the best! -Mirsonia
