I have been to many CF boxes and this is by far my favorite one. Jason (owner) fosters a family…read moretype environment while kicking your ass. His coaches are very professional, hard working, knowledgable, and are machines. Celeste is one of the coaches there and first off, she is in a constant beast mode. This chic puts the dudes to shame! The other coaches are great too (Curtis, Jesse, Alex, I'm sure I am missing a few). The athletes that crush WOD's at CFL are motivating, friendly, and welcoming. Every time I am in San Antonio, I visit every day I can. They also have a smoothie bar, you can purchase supplements, and apparel there too. So you're probably thinking why I only gave it four out of five stars. Well, when I attend a CF box, I expect filacio and to be doing lines of blow off of strippers asses. Unfortunately, this does not happen at CFL, but I have been told my requests will be accommodated. I would even accept doing blow off of hot chic CF athletes, but call me crazy!

I've been away from San Antonio for several months now however this will be my first review of…read moreCrossFit Lackland. I visited and spent time in 7 different boxes across San Antonio. Being a garage gym guy I needed to see how I would fare in the daily competitive environment that boxes offer (you just can't get that working out alone or with one friend most of the time). While I have nothing negative to say about any of the gyms I dropped into, I do have much to rave about when it comes to CFL. Facility and equipment: Pretty straightforward here. They have all the equipment you need for a CrossFit gym. They have it and they have a lot of it. You won't be sharing bars or looking for space on a wall, blah, blah.. The facility itself is quite large and this is important when it comes to safety with large groups and the intense nature of CF workouts. Let me add that I've witnessed regular cleaning and maintenance of this facility and equipment. Oh, and there are 4 restroom/showers, a kids room, a separate kitchen area, and an entirely separate room where I would hide when I just wanted to do my own thing and avoid the hard work (thank you Jason). Parking is plentiful. Programming: Never had a bad thing to say about the programming. I am a Physical Therapist (selfless plug) and although I do not adhere to smart practices all the time, I can confidently say that programming here is competent enough that risk from overuse, or consecutive days of doing the same thing, just wasn't present. There was always a dynamic warm up that was relevant to the metcon and just enough strength and skill work to keep you maintained (if you want to be better then you def have to do more but most gyms will tell you that anyway). There is a ton more that I can add however I'm halfway through writing a novel now and I have a few more items to touch on. Coaches: Loved 'em all. Responsible and approachable. I'd say I made some of my best friends at this gym (not biased at all). If you've been part of a box before, you know there is always turnover in this area but I would argue that this is a good thing. New opinions and new flavors help growth. Owners: Jason is a motivator. You'll hate him, you'll love him, whatever. He won't let you quit without a push. He will help you find a new you. He didn't help me because I avoided him most of the time (I'm lazy, and arrogant). In all seriousness, I can't even begin to describe how grateful I am to have met Jason and his family, so I won't. You'd have to drop in and formulate your own opinions. I look forward to training or pcs'ing to San Antonio again for many reasons. These guys are one of those reasons. Hope you lasted through this review, trust me it could have been longer...

When it comes to gyms this is a very unusual gym. I will get to that later in this review. If you…read moreare looking for a quiet place to get your sweat on this it. Even during its peak hours it is not very crowded. That is a good thing as the locker rooms are a bit small but not to the point where if the person next to you bends over you think hey I didn't even buy you dinner. The gym is located on a distant part of Lackland many know as Security Hill. It is away from the main part of the base where you would find the commissary, AAFES, and the other main gym on base. The gym offers everything you need to get in a full workout and if you want to run outside there is a paved fitness trail you can tackle. Classes are offfered Monday through Friday such as cycling step, kickboxing, and circuit training. There is a racquetball court and a few outside covered basketball courts to keep you out the Texas sun. Here is the unusual part. The racquetball court and the cardio room are all in separate buildings located near each other. If you are doing your own circuit training and want to do a sprint after doing some thrusters or weighted squats you have to leave the building where the weights are and go to the cardio building. It's a short walk but the fact you have to go outside is unusual. Oh and here is something else. There is no bathroom in the cardio room. If the urge strikes you head to the main building and use the only bathrooms there. At least the walkway is covered in case of rain. Parking is plentiful. Not a bad place but it does take some getting use to.

Far gym but good variety…read more It's definitely different since not everything is in the same building. One building is being used for all the treadmill and cardio machines. There's also a building just for Yoga/calisthenics where classes are held Monday through Friday. Lastly, the main building for weightlifting. This gym is unique because they have shaded outdoor basketball courts, a sand pit volleyball court (not shaded), and a trail to go running on outside.

The sessions were difficult since I hadn't worked out in a few years, but reinforced my thoughts that I needed to get back to the gym and I signed up for a year's worth of their small group training. I love the small class size and while the classes are tough, my body feels better, is definitely toning up and I sleep better too. I love the individual attention the small group classes allow and how they focus on different muscle groups each day. Every trainer I've worked with leading the classes has been excellent....encouraging and pushing me to increase my strength but modifying exercises when needed to avoid injury. I'm no athlete, yet Kenny manages to work with my limited capabilities to get me stronger and more flexible. After little more than 8 weeks (despite me ignoring diet or aerobic exercise discipline), I managed to lose over 4% body fat working out three times a week with Kenny! I also lost over 2 inches on my hips-- and I'm 57! Now I am encouraged to keep going, to lose the weight I've gained since menopause, and to keep getting stronger and get my full range of motion back. With Kenny's training and expertise I get to benefit from diet recommendations (gum had carbs, who knew?) and yes, even aerobic exercise. I'm going to try jump roping with one that has a counter in the handle. I'm looking forward to being leaner and fitter in 2019.
