A new pilates and barre studio has found it's home in the Stone Oak area! This is actually the second of three planned locations for the SA area, and the studio space is clean and organized with tons of equipment available from resistance bands and weights to various mats, balls, bands, and blocks. Pull them up on the MindBody app to check their schedule to see what you'd like to check out - note that they do have on site baby sitting available. I checked out a couple of classes and instructors over my 2 week visit to TX- BODY is a dance fitness class with Jordin Dudas, and as with anything new, once you've struggled through that first class, the others are easier. It does help to have a dance background, as the class jumps right into teaching and practicing choreographed routines without much explanation for the individual moves. Though their website recommends sneakers, bare feet seem to be your best option unless you're wearing dance specific shoes. BARRE with Carolina Betancourt was the first class of this style I've taken in years, and now I remember why: the tiny pilates-esque moves are subtle but so tiring. If I could make myself go regularly, it'd probably be pretty effective but I prefer cardio. I really appreciate how the instructor went around to help with form and also provided modifications. All the classes were a good workout, and the instructors really seemed to know their stuff. Classes were quite small- never over 6 people, though whether that's due to the studio being newly opened, the location itself, or the boutique style of the studio, I couldn't tell you, but the individualized attention is appreciated and prevents injury. TIP: They occasionally offer free classes (on Fridays or when instructors are in training), so check the schedule regularly. Drop in rates are half off ($20 to $10) til August, with a first-month promo for $70 unlimited.

Mind, Body, & Mean Girls…read more I left this studio feeling as though I had been "mean-girled" out of returning, and that is not how anyone should be made to feel in a fitness environment. I have been practicing Pilates since 2019. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I do know my body and its capabilities and limitations after having played competitive tennis for over 30 years. I've accumulated several injuries over the years, so I sometimes need reasonable adjustments or alternative movements. Instead of approaching those needs with professionalism, curiosity, or compassion, the owner made me feel as though other patrons or instructors had been taking issue with my modifications, and "reporting" them. Why anyone else was so concerned about my workout is beyond me. In a Pilates class, shouldn't participants be focused on their own bodies and their own practice? Pilates is supposed to foster a positive mind-body connection. Imagine trying to concentrate on your breathing and movement after learning that people are scrutinizing you, discussing you behind your back, and complaining about the accommodations you need. The entire environment stopped feeling supportive and became uncomfortable, judgmental, and exclusionary. The studio also enforced seemingly arbitrary "rules" about not performing planks on the reformer, supposedly because of safety concerns. Yet its TRX straps were not adjustable, which created a much more concerning situation: if a student's feet are not properly secured, the movement may place the student at risk of falling or injuring the lower back. I can't help wondering whether that contributed to those classes no longer being offered. The inconsistency between policing an individual modification and overlooking equipment-related concerns was striking. A good instructor knows how to offer safe alternatives without embarrassing or alienating a client. A good studio creates an environment where people with different bodies, abilities, and injury histories can exercise without feeling watched, judged, or pushed out. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. I came to work out and care for my body, not to relive high school social dynamics in a Pilates studio.

Luckily for me I've found a studio that truly pushes me and makes me want to hit up the studio. More importantly... I'm not being forced with a taser behind my back and on 100mg of Vicodin in order to be coerced. This studio is very personable and isn't some Mega Gym you'd find on the movie Dodgeball. You can find one cycling room inside here with about 35 bikes. If you don't have the standard cycling shoes, no need to fear, as plenty of their bikes have shoe straps. No uptight or snooty staff here! Everyone is super nice and are more than willing to help you. If it's your first or thirtieth time don't hesitate to ask them to adjust your bike. They're also super nice and if you show up a few minutes late they'll guide you to your bike with a flashlight since the lights are turned off. The classes are high intensity but the results are in the sweat. You will feel motivated and pushed in your class and the music is truly upbeat. Cycling is probably one of my favorite cardio exercises and I'm happy to say I've drank the JoyRide kool-aid juice.

Both wonderful but I ultimately decided on Pilates Reformer classes for my fitness goals. The reformer classes are a full body workout. Movements are slow and controlled but boy do you work every muscle in your body. Plus, the resistance on the machine ensures you're working it all and then some. I feel more toned and definitely stronger since I started with them. Plus, these classes really increase your flexibility. Absolutely loving it! These classes are also great for people with joint issues because it's low impact. And again, I have to give some love to the instructors. Working out is hard. Getting motivated to work out is harder. But when you come in bright and early in the morning to friendly instructors and a friendly classmates, it makes you want to keep on coming in. The instructors here are helpful, give great guidance and genuinely want you to succeed. Couldn't ask for a better workout community. Check it out if you haven't.
