BUYER BEWARE of the post-visit (and absolutely insane) money grab. Dropped $350 in just two visits... left with a proposal care plan for 3 months that would cost me $3,500. I've nothing major going on - just some middle back pain that I need to do some exercises for to beef up my posture. I've a high-deductible insurance plan that allows for 4 Chiropractic visits a year, but evidently these don't count. Now, to be fair, I knew I'd have to get an X-ray the first visit, which may cost me more. And the Doctor Bixel seemed friendly enough, good "bedside" manner, etc. But if you've ever gone to a "normal" chiropractic visit you know that you usually pay one fee, and they proceed to do the regular adjustments which take a total of about 6 minutes: 1. Lay on your stomach - a couple mid back cracks 2. Lay on your side - they rotate your hips/shoulders (maybe you feel a pop, maybe not) 3. Lay on your back - they'll tug each leg/foot (maybe you'll feel a hip pop, maybe not) 4. Adjust your neck - (always a payoff for me) and you're out. Now imagine all of this happening (all the while he's just chatting with you telling you what to do next) except when you went out 6 minutes later to ring up you find that the exam is one thing and EVERY "extremity adjusted" aside from that (so basically, every step) is an additional $35 or so. So, unless you have the most BOUGIE insurance plans, or just money to burn, you've got a surprise waiting for you at checkout. SO mine looked more like this: 0. Exam - $87.75 1. Lay on your stomach (thoracic) - $30.62 a. While you were there he did your lower back too - $32.42 2. Lay on your side (Lumbosacral) - $37.25 3. Lay on your back (extra spinal) - $21.29 4. Adjust your neck (cervical) - $36.94 I've included a photo of my receipt. I thought something was weird with the cost reported to me on my first visit, but as I said, I chalked it up to the x-ray. The lady told me that my next visit (for a regular adjustment) would cost me around $50 or so. Only this time when I went in (they have you wait in these little sitting/dressing rooms that are connected to the exam room) They pulled my number from the door, but before opening it, had a chat about all the things they could charge me for. I don't think the Doc & the Admin assistant realized that they were talking loud enough about me that I could hear them. Really bad form, and I tried to tell myself that maybe I just heard wrong and I should just wait to see what happens at checkout. But then they took me to meet with with the admin assistant where I was presented with a "care plan" that would cost me $3500 for 3 months of physical therapy/rehab to get my posture improved. I still tried to be optimistic (as I said, everyone is very friendly as I'm a walking wallet, evidently) and just told myself that the crazy up-sell is just part of the deal. Then I got to checkout and was asked to pay $246. (I paid $100 the first visit, which is maybe why I wasn't too scared this second one) I could not believe it. I wasn't planning on disputing it or making a MAN KAREN type of scene. After all, fool me TWICE, right? But I was actually super sad as I feel I was TOTALLY TRICKED and taken advantage of. I paid it all (I don't want to owe them anything) so that we're square and politely told the friendly girl that no follow ups are needed as I won't be coming back. I learned my lesson. read more

Referred by the VA, I saw Dr. Bixel and found him to be friendly. The sessions were quick and to the point but I honestly didn't seem to get much benefit from them. Some of my questions were never answered and the chiropractic side felt like a waste of time for me but I'd never knock the practice for ppl getting true results. I did have an amazing experience on the PT side. Physical therapist were thorough, knowledgeable, professional and very helpful!! Only had one 30 min massage, and I only had one in my life prior, but it was great If the VA would let me, I'd use the PT side as often as possible. read more

I've worked in places like this before for years and understand that there will always be mistakes and flawed business plans but this place is on a whole other level. The PT's are awesome, there is no denying that. The female chiropractor has a weird vibe to her and not a great bedside manner. I was treated so differently from the first initial appt to the time I told them I can only come in 1-2x a week. They try and reel you in and ask questions like " why are you really here?" for hopes of people to probably break down and tell them a sob story just so they can sign you up for 4x a week expecting you to drop everything in your life to go there and give them your money. I know the tricks, I've worked in exact places like this, not going to work on me. My appts also got messed up multiple times. I was told that my massage therapist was out that day WHEN I GOT THERE ( this happened twice). I would confirm my appts myself by calling them the day before or the morning of. Isn't the front desk suppose to do that?! I requested twice not to have a male therapist, and of course, they put me with the male therapist. Look, mistakes happen, but this place isn't genuine. They want to get you in the door and take your money so they can " meet their goals" and get that paid holiday vacation during Christmas time ( as I was told by the chiropractor) . I gave more than 1 star because the PT's there are great and I enjoyed my time with them, they helped a lot. Chiropractic and the administrative side of this place needs some serious work. read more

Best way to discribe this is a money pit. They take you down the rabbit hole with more and more charges. Initial visit they do full exam after that they present the program for you which comes to around $3,700.00. I declined & did just chiro which helped me. Also they charge for every extremity another $35.00, we are talking even if they rub your wrist or pull a finger. However, they continue to present programs to you for more money. I did see Sally They call her Dr. Sally I don't think the Dr. belongs in front of her name(westside) location. Worst mistake medically I have ever made. She comes across knowing her stuff, but when she had no answer for your questions she totally avoids seeing you or even calling you back to discuss. I now know just within my circle that she has had the same response to 4 of my acquaintances..All staff cover for each other and put clients secondary. It is a constant opening of your wallet and pushing you to do yet another program with them...Red-light, compression chamber, shockwave theraphy!!!! Unbelievble, If you want advice and you do because you are reading this DON'T GO find another respectabled place. read more

Inconsistent is the word I would use to describe this place. They're helpful as long as you're making appointments. I moved and wanted to get my records sent to me. After two months of calls, emails and no results, I finally gave up. Gardner chiropractic is better anyway. read more

I started going to see Dr Tony (Del Angel) at Gonstead several months ago. I was dealing with lingering tailbone pain that seemed to flair up when I did back squats or lower back heavy CrossFit workouts (see my review of Black Box Fitness for the best xfit box I've ever been to). I chose Dr Tony on the recommendation of a fellow CrossFitter, who mentioned that Dr Tony used to work as a strength-and-conditioning coach and has an MA in exercise physiology. Since the trainers at Black Box are very educated and knowledgeable, I was interested to see if their thoughts on my issue converged with Dr Tony's, and thankfully they did (I already trusted them but didn't know Dr Tony yet). I'm happy to report that my tailbone issue -- and the dreaded "butt wink" and lack of glute-firing that was causing it -- is under control, and I continue to see Dr Tony for adjustments. More generally, I feel like movement, feeling, and muscle control has been restored to my glutes and hips that I didn't even realize I was missing, and I definitely don't want to lose it. Four details that people might care about or find interesting: 1. My insurance is Presbyterian, and Gonstead's office communicates with them competently. I think that half of the battle with healthcare is finding medical offices that know how to work with insurance companies, even difficult ones like Pres. 2. Gonstead represents a unique approach to chiropractic that adjusts via hands-only manipulations, like back cracking (not sure if that's what they call it), rather than using instruments that do things like apply direct pressure to individual vertebrae. 3. This particular office is conspicuously religious. Christian music plays in the waiting room, there are bibles in the rooms outside of the treatment room, and there are crosses and bible quotes in the treatment room. I'm an atheist, and this type of stuff doesn't bother me, but I think that it deserves mention because it might make some people uncomfortable (or more comfortable, I suppose). 4. Less conspicuously, this office is anti-vaccine. The rooms outside of the treatment room have TV screens that show brief messages from Gonstead. One of them mentioned an ingredient used in vaccines and listed a couple of bad things that it is linked to, and another said that you shouldn't feel pressured by your doctor to get vaccinated. I'm very pro-vaccine, and once again this doesn't bother me, but I know that it's a polarizing issue. read more

I actually have been going to the location in Rio Rancho to see Dr. Tony. I came in after moving houses with extreme back pain that was caused when I was little. At this point in time I have had back pain all my life. I'm used to it. But not this bad. A friend of mine told me about Gonstead Physical and said I should try it... at this point in time I was living off Tylenol, heat packs and salt baths so I was willing to try anything. After seeing dr. Tony and getting my first check up (X-rays) I was set on a plan of physical therapy and adjustments. Part of me thought "no way is this going to fix it, once I start getting adjustments I'll be in more pain later if I stop" I finished my adjustment and physical therapy plan, and I have never felt this good! Anytime I had extra pain I was able to talk with them and figure something out. Money was another issue for me, I was scared with how much this would cost. They worked with me on a payment plan at a price I was able to handle. I would recommend going to see Gonstead Physical Medicine for any issues you may have! They have literally changed my life and I'm so thankful I took that step and went in! read more
