My Dr. is pretty good, but if you have any issues where support people are involved, good luck. I saw my Dr. on February 25, 2026 and he said he was giving me a referral for a sleep study. That was FEBRUARY 25, 2026. Today is APRIL 14, 2026 and that referral HAS NEVER BEEN SENT. Even though last week when I called for the third time about this issue I was told by a lady there that she had called a facility and sent the referral last Wednesday. I called the facility today and they didn't know who I was. If you have parents or older relatives watch over them and verify what Gonzaba is doing. Wait time is horrible! Appointments are scheduled but you're still waiting to be seen 1-2 hours after appointment time. Some of the staff are very friendly but there are some who are rude and also are heard having unprofessional personal conversations at the work place. ​I took my uncle to have blood drawn at the Culebra lab Gonzaba medical on Wednesday, 11.26.2025 at 10:50am. He walked in with his usual happy and friendly greeting and was totally ignored. Three Hispanic ladies in there were completely rude and ignored him. One lady was complaining loudly how busy it is and she will get to everyone. I could hear her in waiting room. My uncle came out with no smile just shaking his head at how uncomfortable it was in that lab room. Urgent Care... Grandson in Law went in for back pain. Granddaughter stated they requested an x-ray but doctor refused it. Stated he didn't need one. He has been complaining about back pain around his lower back bone area. If they have great private insurance, why can't they receive a simple xray to rule out early arthritis? This is not the first time of having issues with them. Doctor refused my xray, but thank God I pushed for one. Found out I had walking pneumonia. If it wasn't for me asking for one, I would have ended up in the hospital. read more

I tried a few times to schedule an appointment with no help from Gonzaba. I went on Medicare and Medicare chose Gonzaba as my medical provider. They chose an available doctor that was accepting new patients. I called to set up an appointment today and she is no longer accepting new patient. This doctor is on my Humana card as my PCP. I have read some of the horrible reviews on Gonzaba. I will share my frustrations with Humana and Medicare to cease recommending Gonzaba for medical practice. I have shared my story to KSAT 12. my mother is patient at this location it has the worst service. my mother (llamas) shows for her appointments and there always canceling them to put some one else in her spot. they messed up her padiatrist appt on fri 25. cancelled it while she was there. then they messed up her acupuncture appt. these kinds of issues have been going on for over a yr. the staff in the front are constantly messing up peoples appts and the moment someone complains. they cancel someone elses appt. no wonder this office has a 2.0 rating . no body is paying to the horrible job these girls are doing.. i don't understand how no one is being held accountable for the mistakes and irresponsible actions. about how this office is being handled for 83 yr old women who is diabetic to have to wait for months to get her toe nails trimmed. there's no excuse for some one to have to walk around in pain. read more

I wouldn't send my enemy there. I have lived in many states and seen many doctors, this place is a disgrace and by far the worst of my entire 58 years of living! If you love your family or yourself stay away! One phone number for the entire medical facilities, don't bank on waiting to reach someone on the phone the same day you call, god help you if it's important. Case manager...that's a joke....they never have answers and they take days to call you back to tell you they don't have answers. Get your elderly away from there and send them elsewhere. I've been a patient for decades, but after today's experience I will be looking for healthcare somewhere else. Had an appt scheduled for a certain date and time, but was called and told Dr Tom could not see me so they rescheduled me to see a PA. I show up to my scheduled appt and after waiting in line for 15 minutes am told I do not have an appt. I am sent to patient services to check and sure enough, whoever rescheduled me did not put me on the calendar. I am told this after I have spent 45 minutes waiting. This of not the first time something like this occurs. So disappointed. read more

Strongly discourage this Nurse Practitioner at this location; avoid at all costs. Look elsewhere for medical care for your loved ones and yourself despite the convenient location of the new Urgent Care. NP Kim Alvarado claims community involvement but lacks empathy and compassion, especially towards the elderly. Her contribution to Gonzaba Medical Group doesn't positively distinguish the clinic. Advocate for hiring compassionate staff to better represent the south side. There are plenty of other places to establish care than Gonzaba. read more

DO NOT GO TO GONZABA. Each time I call I have to wait on hold for an extended period of time. I ran out of medication and was informed that I needed to get another pre-authorization. The woman on the phone notified me that this was my responsibility and not the doctor - even though I had specifically inquired at my last visit if there was anything else that needed to be done. I asked if a message could be given to the doctor to see what options I had in the meantime. I depend on on my medication and being without it deeply impacts my health. She notified me that she sent a message. I then asked when I could expect a call back. She replied that she could not give me a time. I then asked if it is it a standard 72 hours to respond. She again stated that she could not give me a time. I then asked if it would be longer than that - still she would not say. This is the epitome of poor customer service. Organizations that respect their customers have policies in place related to what the customary response time should be. Gonzaba does not hesitate to send you a bill - they are very timely with that. GO TO A DOCTOR WHO RESPECTS YOU AND YOUR TIME. STAY AWAY FROM GONZABA. read more

My beef with Gonzaba is that it I have been going to them for years and they could never figure out that I had cancer. I went to an outside urologist and with the first visit he found out that I had cancer. My doctor at Gonzaba at the time kept apologizing. And in short I got mad at Gonzaba's Doctor and told they didn't want me to come back anymore. To me it looks like they screwed up because by the time they found anything I had stage 4 cancer. read more

0 stars Late post, this happened November 2021. Mc Vey, PA improperly treated my son who clearly had a concussion. She was told that he took a hit in the head during the game. He was given a prescription for an antibiotic!!! ***Concussion protocols were not followed. I had to take him to another Doctor's office altogether to get him the proper medical care. My son was out for the rest of the season and wasn't released to play any other sports until late December. ***Gonzaba, you "need to" retrain your employees in regards to concussions. read more

Do not join this medical group. My mom has epilepsy. They gave her New medication try. She tried for 2 weeks. She's now run out of all her medication She called Tuesday for refill no one called her back. Called Wednesday for a refill. Spoke to a nurse who said she'd call her back. It's now Thursday and no return call. No medication and my mom has now lost 10lbs. On top of this I've been on hold for over 30min just trying to get someone on the phone. Then I was hung up on. I've been going to gonzaba for over ten years now. I've had multiple doctors, but they ALL have been consistent in wanting to serve and help me. I make my women's appointments on saturday's as they have a women's clinic once a month. Their sono people are friendly and not rough so they are always willing to talk and make you comfortable. The check in people always strive to be quick and direct you in the right location. This whole place is very on track, there is nothing they lack and I really enjoy the lab because they're comedians sometimes and make you feel at home when you're getting pricked. I give the medical staff including front desk people, nurses, NPs and doctors five stars. My issues are mostly with their communication center. If you need to speak to your PCP or someone who works for your PCP, then you need to call Gonzaba's central phone@210-900-4702 and if you're lucky to get someone on the phone within 5 to 10 minutes, then you have to answer the security questions and tell them which Gonzaba medical center you want to talk to and/or who is your doctor and what is your inquiries or issues, then they take a note and will tell you someone will get back to you later!! In case later you miss their call you must call that central number again and go through the same long boring process!! Sometimes It gets very frustrating if you just want to simply ask a question or change your medication or change or postpone your appointment!! I believe this service is for their convenience and not for patient's convenience, otherwise they would provide separate phone numbers for different physicians or at least would provide separate numbers for their different locations!! And the same problem exists with their patient's portal, if you ask a question on portal, then someone tries to call you, and if you miss the call, then you have to call back the same central number and so on...Communication services are really bad. read more

I have been using Gonzaba Medical Group since 1993. Due to changes in my medical coverage during the 28 years I had to use other providers in San Antonio. Without question Gonzaba is the best I found. I changed my coverage during the Open Season to change my provider back to Gonzaba. I now have Blue Crop Blue Shield coverage and can use any Doctor in the city. I use the new Culebra Ave Clinic located just West of Loop 410 on the West side of town. An excellent facility. great free parking, easy access to all main streets. Before COVID 19, great coffee in the waiting room. I also use the VA Health System for some medical care. Does not cost me a cent to use the VA yet I pay to use Gonzaba as I like it that much. My only issue is when the moved to the new clinic location last year. A superior Mexican Restaurant that was next door to the old site remained in its original location. Now I have to drive a few blocks after a fasting blood test to get a breakfast taco. And I am a Gringo of German decent. read more

Referrals to see specialist are not a priority and they try and keep patients in-house with prescribing more meds and physical therapy that clearly do not work for serious Health issues when questioned they state the file is reviewed by gonzaba board of directors including the doctor and a decision is made to refer out or keep making patients spend more money "in-house" for continued treatment. I have many health issues for a younger aged person. I see many specialists within the GMG along with my primary and physical therapy. I have been treated with the utmost respect, professionalism and care. In reading some of these past reviews I can tell processes have changed, staff and protocol have changed. Dr.Castro Pena's team failed a patient today by not allowing the individual who makes his medical decisions and cares for him to be allowed in the back with him while patient gets seen. I guess there not all about patient care as they advertise, seems like all they want is to bill the insurance and make there money.. staff was given in depth explanations as to why patient needed to have second person with him but I guess when you don't care about your patience health or well being this is what you get. Not to mention having to take a day off from work to take patient in to only be given the run around. I would steer clear of this clinic read more

Beware when you join the Gonzaba group. You will not be able to keep your specialist if they are not part of Gonzaba. They will force you to use a in house specialist. They tried to do that to me. I was new to Gonzaba being referred to one of their PCP's. After my check up I asked about having my knee checked. I was having complications and asked my doctor for a referral to my ortho that did my knee replacements. They told me that I needed to do physical therapy 1st. So I did. Then they said I needed to do more therapy. Then they told me that I needed to lose weight and wanted me to see THEIR weight mgmt dr. Losing weight wasn't going to help me bend my knee! (I had scar tissue prohibiting my knee from bending) Plus the physical therapy wasn't custom to my needs. Everyone there does the same exercises. We can't all have the same issues! My Ortho called to get my referral and was told they would not be providing it. They don't care about what the patient wants they only care about making money by making you see their in house dr's. I had planned to get my knee repaired during summer so as not to take off during work since I work at a school. They wasted my whole summer giving me run arounds. In all fairness the staff was very nice and they answered the phone so was easy to get appts and get calls back in regards to my complaints but ultimately its about making money for the team. Their team. Just keep in mind if all your doctors are not in house you will have to change dr's. No one should be forced to change dr's if they don't want to. So I changed my PCP and left Gonzaba. read more

I can't say enough positive things about this place. It is the most welcoming and accommodating medical office I have ever entered. The staff talks and hugs and cares for the patients.
