I had been wanting to go for a long time, and then I finally did for their Thanksgiving hot bar special. It is a nice store, it has great items... but the prices were a bit out of my budget so I skipped straight to the hot bar. I got two plates (pay per lb), two drinks, and two pie slices. The total was close to $70 for a two-person meal. I could no understand how the meals alone were a bit over $50, it did not feel like 2lbs per person, but then again I did not pay attention to the scale. The food was not very hot by the time we sat down to eat, and it was very crowded at 11 AM. The employees were meh but then again, it was a holiday so I appreciate their presence. We still had a good time, the food was good, but I am not sure if I'd return (mostly due to the cost). It reminded me of sprouts or whole foods, just smaller. read more

This was the very last stop that I checked out before leaving Lexington Kentucky. This is a great co-op store just because of all the healthy options that is featured here. There's also a little Smoothie Bar that has some snacks here as well. If you come here in the morning you probably won't find too much. They have a little Community Center as well that helps bring people together which I thought was pretty touching. Everybody here was very friendly. Great selection of everything practical you can find! Well organized and well stocked. Highly recommend checking this place out if you were in the area! read more

As a co-op, this place has an ownership system rather than membership. I was hoping to be convinced that it would be worth the substantial price to buy in, but I really wasn't. My assumption would be that a place like this would be the best for local items and niche health foods. The balance was more towards the former than the latter, though their cafe might be good. Notably, their selection of hummus was much smaller than their selection of beer cheese. Does anyone in Lexington eat hummus? If so, please let me know where to get some. This place had some alternative milks and tofu, but nothing distinctive or local and nothing that would really compete with a big box health food store. They did however have plenty of Ale-8. I will say that the fresh vegetable selection looked nice, they had a good bulk foods section, and they have a decent sized store overall, but some of their weaknesses just puzzled me. From my perspective, it's good enough to occasionally stop in and hunt for a deal, but not good enough to buy in and do all my shopping here. read more

I love going to Good Foods Co-Op! While some of their stuff may be expensive, at times, if you check your email and such, they will send you coupons and deals. I love it when their spices and teas are 40% off. I stock up on spices I use regularly and can get as much or as little as I need. My favorite time to go is during their quarterly deals off the whole store. Most times that's when I stock up on meat and cheeses. You have the opportunity to help farmers locally while getting good food for your family. Sure if you want the deals, you have to purchase 1 share for your family; but once you move away, you can sell that share back, and get your money back. To me, it's a win-win. read more

Has the best bulk selection in Lexington so I'm always getting my spices and grains here. Go here for organic low sodium beans too, and sometimes canned tomato products. The cafe is a nice add on, though prices. It's a great add on grocery store. Fills a niche that other grocery stores just can't fill. I miss a grocery store where I used to live, Sprouts, and Good Foods is by far the closest grocery store here to that so definitely helps. read more

Oh how I've missed the Good Foods Co-op! I've been gone for ten years, and just recently moved back to Lexington. What have I missed? Everything, but specifically the deliciously prepared items from the ever-rotating hot food bar. I've missed the great selection of organic produce. And I have really, really missed their massive stock of bulk organic spices from which I can buy a teaspoon of something or a cup. They also have one heck of a beer collection. The folks working at the co-op are so friendly and very willing to help you with anything you might need. Oh, how I love this place. Good Foods makes me happy. My hippie heart dances upon walking through the doors. Co-ops are pretty much a dying breed. A co-op in Lexington with so many local goodies fills me with joy: meats, cheese, eggs, vegetables, soaps, sauces, salads, etc. One aisle is full of bulk goodies, another has a good selection of beer, and yet more aisles are filled with organic pet food, green cleaning supplies, fair-trade coffee, sushi, vitamins, baked goods, herbs, vegan foods, and everything else to fill your crunchy home. They also stock my favorite brand of incense (Morning Star), which is the icing on the cake -- it's not that easy to find. (Psst: you can also find organic duck eggs here from my adopted Aunt's duck farm.) Yeah, it may not be cheap, but if you budget and stick to just what you need, you'll be fine. And you'll be supporting your local community instead of white rich guys using slave labor in other parts of the country to grow off-season tomatoes for you. Think about that. Feed your body, feed your soul, and help the world out a little bit here. Good Foods is the real deal. You can also bet I got one of their bumper stickers and slapped it on the back window of my car. (It stayed there for nearly a year until the car died a couple weeks ago.) I have yet to try the hot buffet or salad bar or anything for lunch.... next time. Definitely next time. When a friend and I met for dinner at The Cafe in the CoOp, we first had to take a lap around the hot bar, salad bar, and survey the sandwich options before being able to make our dinner choices. I am a sucker for a good salad bar and was not disappointed by their spread- tons of fresh veggies, fruits, cheeses, proteins (meat & vegetarian), dressings, and other salad toppings. This place was my vegan oasis in a town where my options are limited! I asked the BF to take me to Good Foods Co-Op for some pre-Thanksgiving shopping. Even though we were in his hometown, he has never been. So it was fun to explore this place together :) This place has such legit vegan options, I'm a bit embarrassed for underestimating Lexington's vegan potential because this place has got it goin' on! I have always been a little on the fence about the Co-op because their customer service and staff friendliness/helpfulness is practically non-existent. When I check out, they always ask if I am a member and when I say "no," no one has ever offered any information on how I can become a member. The staff always seem super apathetic. However, they carry really great products and I'm impressed by their locally-raised meat selection. If you want to get out of supporting factory-raised animals, this is a great place to start. Lots of other locally sourced items as well. Also, they are doing a great job with their safety measures. True, there is always one or two idiots shopping in there who can't (or won't) follow the directions, but they are requesting masks be worn, have set up arrows on the floor to indicate one way traffic, their check out staff are wearing masks, etc. I love that they are taking their customers' and their staffs' health seriously. Good Foods is near where I work, which is super convenient. If I need to pick something up to make for dinner, I often stop here. It's awesome being able to support local farms & businesses. There's often items that you can't find in other stores (duck from Farmer Joe's organic farm!) and I can also pick up organic beauty products & the hippie deodorant my boyfriend likes (Herban Cowboy). Everything gets bagged in a strong paper sack, which is nice. We also come for lunch. The salad bar is fabulous & the hot bar always has something tasty. It's a filling & fast lunch -- but a healthy one. It's a great way to avoid having to stop at a fast food place. read more

Good Foods should rank way higher as a place for vegan foods. I'm from Versailles, but live in Atlanta. Every time I come back in town, this place holds me down better than anywhere else when it comes to veganism. The hot bar, salad bar, grab n go items and the cafe give healthier vegan options than 90% of the vegan restaurants in Lex. Not knocking any of the other places, I've ate all of them and they are great, but most are pure comfort foods. Comfort foods are great as a treat, but for every day eating, nothing beats Good Foods hot bar and cafe. And the prices are just as affordable if not cheaper. Lexington's only food co-op and my go-to place for local produce and meats!! They pretty much offer whatever you may be looking for; produce, meat, dairy, cleaning products, beer, artisan cheese, sushi, in-house baked goods, bulk foods, bulk coffee and tea, natural skincare, herbal remedies.. heck, they even have incense and bath salts!!! Yes, some things might be a bit pricier than what you would find at your regular grocery store but other things can be cheaper..you get good quality of stuff, support a co-op, and the local farmers by shopping here!! The co-op also happens to be my dining option when I don't have time to cook but I want to avoid junk food. They have a buffet of hot foods, several options of soups, a huge salad bar and sandwiches..Anyone can definitely find something to eat here whether a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or avoiding nuts due to allergies. One thing I found useful is to follow them on facebook to keep informed about their in-store events and also find out what's served on the hot buffet on that day!! read more

This organic co-op grocery/deli fits perfectly into the ambiance of the Southland neighborhood. They have tons of locally grown seasonal produce for sale, alone with grocery items perfect for whatever kick you're currently on (vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, Whole30, whatever). I wouldn't say their meat selection is as extensive as Critchfield's, but they do have some things Critchfield's didn't (believe it or not). Additionally, their salad bar/buffet/deli is perfect for those grocery-store food cravings, while still giving you the option to make healthy choices. While Lucky's or Whole Foods could give this place a run for its money, the niche market of Southland and that amazing deli should keep Good Foods running for years to come. read more

This review is for juice bar. I came in to place an order for 5 fresh kale press juices. The cashier was rude, told me to step to the side; so he can cash out the line of customers forming behind me. Apparently, it was hard for him to make few steps and ask barista if they can make 5 of the same juices. While he took other people orders for the juice bar. He kept on doing it, until I interfere and asked how long do I have to wait. His response to me was, there is a lot going on right now" I should stop bothering him. Awful service!!!!!! read more

Good foods is a great place to pick up a few items and have a meal from their buffet. I do overall enjoy going to the coop, but regularly find myself annoyed with the buffet areas maintenance ( like several employees at the smoothie counter talking while the dining area is dirty, and other basic things like silverware empty and not checked). When they are on I leave very happy, but when they are off, I leave annoyed wondering why they can't just be consistent. read more

I think I usually look over this place because I consider it a grocery store only and forget they also have a hot bar cafe. Today I ate at that cafe for the first time and this place gets 5 stars from me, I can't believe it took me so long to check it out. The food: you know what your eating is clean, local, and fresh. So you can feel good about anything you put on your plate. There is not an over abundance of choices but there are a decent about of choices. Usually a few vegan options (today was kale salad, biscuits, gravy, and broccoli), many veggie options, and a variety of meat choices such as bacon and sausage. Everything I ate was delicious. They also have smoothies and coffees you can order- and a large range of drinks. The cost: you pay by the weight of the plate. My plate had biscuits, gravy, quiche, grits, and salad and cost a little over 5 dollars. So I felt is was more then affordable. Dinning experience: It is a supper convenient location for me and I think that adds to the overall ease of going. There are plenty of tables to eat at. The whole place is very clean and neat. I've never had trouble finding a clean place to sit. Their plates and utensils are all biodegradable and recycled so you can also feel good about what you are eating on. Staff: all incredible , friendly, and supper helpful! After brunch -going to get some grocery supplies I needed was supper easy and a big time saver! Ventured over to Good Foods Co Op for the first time with some friends, what a great place! There is a grocery store connected to the deli side that serves both a hot bar, salad bar, bakery and menu items on the board! the possibilities are endless. I ordered a grilled cheese avocado with a yellow tomato, so good!! They have a seating area if you prefer to eat there, several people come in to go as well. I dropped in on a whim since I was in the area. The checkout boy was visibly irked that my decorator pumpkins were not stickered. He should save his attitude for the produce department. I chose prepared curried chicken salad at $9.99/lb. Not only was the flavor off, but the chicken had been processed to the point of near paste. Completely disgusting. Good Foods? Not so much. Although I've only shopped/eaten here 2 times, both times have been excellent. For the amount of food that they offer (in terms of variety and price), I definitely think that this place is worth it. Yes, it may seem like another Whole Foods wannabe, but it is also a co-op, so I'd definitely rather take my business to these guys. They offer a wide variety of products at a reasonable price--so it's basically one-stop shopping. I was able to get some gifts at the bookshop area, as well as do my grocery shopping all under the same roof. You really can't beat the prices and the freshness of what they have to offer. (Even though they do have the farmer's market, as well as other grocery stores, this place is giving them plenty of competition). I especially enjoyed eating lunch at their buffet. I'll admit that I tend to stick to their salads, but have also tried their hot bar. They could've fooled me with the whole "cafe food" notion. The food was fresh, healthy, and gave me the best bang for my buck. I can't wait to schedule a trip back to KY, cuz this is gonna be one of the places that I'll hit up while in town. read more

This is in relation to their restaurant/buffet, not their grocery store. On Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, I was at their hot buffet and selected a piece of fried chicken as part of my dinner. At the table, when I cut off a piece, viscous red blood literally leaked out of it. It was RAW AND BLOODY in the center. I took it to the cashier and told her they should be ashamed serving dangerous, disgusting food. She apologized and took the plate to show the kitchen staff. I have been to Good Foods many times, but the quality and cleanliness seems to be on a steady decline. By coincidence, the local newspaper published a list of local restaurants that were either closed or placed on probation by the Lexington Health Department. From that article, I learned that Good Foods Co-op has been on probation since Dec. 6, 2019, and that the latest inspection found rat shit under bulk food items (I'm guessing flour and sugar), clean utensils stored in dirty containers, and dirt and filth on shelves, walls, and floors. This is a total failure of management. They are either too incompetent, too lazy, or too stupid to engage in ongoing oversight of the health and cleanliness of their facility. Perhaps the Board of Directors is also too spineless, blissfully unaware and uncaring, or also too incompetent to fire kitchen managers for letting the facility turn into such a disgusting health hazard. For those reading, I would think long and hard before getting food from their restaurant. Look at the plates and silverware and how dingy they are; notice how salads and other cold foods are left open for anyone and everyone to walk by and sample; think about the Health Department's inspection and their continued probationary status. I won't be going back. I don't want to take the risk of getting sick. read more
