We used Good Guys for the first time about 5 years ago to have our trees trimmed. We were extremely pleased with their fair pricing and professional service. Back in January of this year, when our neighbors were getting a bid to have their trees trimmed from a different company, we agreed to have them give us an estimate, too. The price came back on the high side, but I assumed maybe inflation was the reason. I decided to reach out to Good Guys again to see what they would quote. The same employee from 5 years ago--Jose Meza--was quick to respond. (I think it says a lot about a company when you have long term employees, plus, he remembered our house and tree-needs). Also, the quote from Good Guys was way below what the other company quoted--and actually included more work! So last week, when I noticed some bark peeling from one of our red oaks, Jose at Good Guys was the first (and only) person I called. He was prompt and professional. He evaluated both trees and advised that the bark-peel was from boring beetles, but that they weren't active at the moment, and what was truly concerning was the fact that we had clusters of leaves wilting (from poor nutrition). Rather than sell me an expensive trunk injection to treat insects that weren't there, we decided that the best thing for the trees would be a deep-root fertilizer, and we could reevaluate the need to treat the bore-beetles in a few months. I was so disappointed with the service when I requested a quote for removal of a dead tree and trimming bushes from my front yard. The guy who showed up claimed he was an arborist but did not tell the truth about trimming a encroaching tree from next door. He needs to look up Texas law. All he kept saying was I would get sued if he trimmed to overgrown branches. It was a complete waste of my time. He said he would text a quote but did not. Bad service and wrong information. Good Guys was the only company which did not observe that the trunk of my Live Oak had been buried too deeply (the root flare was not visible at all), leading to mold and fungus being able to penetrate the rough bark of the trunk. He also did not observe that the foliage on this tree was about 50% that of the other live oaks in my proximity, indicating that my tree is under stress. The company I chose for the job is responsible for maintaining the Heritage Oaks in Georgetown. It was clear that the knowledge of the estimator with this company was vastly greater than that of the Good Guys estimator. During the storm, I was never afraid that our trees were top heavy because they did such a good job. None of our trees were damage and our neighbors had some bad cracked trees. I had some small work done and some was missed. They were responsive and made it right which was great. Then I called to ask for a copy of my original estimate just to make sure the cost matched and their customer service gentleman on the phone was one of rudest people I've ever dealt with. He had no self control, was cutting me off from the start of the conversation, and kept telling me that I wasn't making sense when I was just asking for a copy of the original estimate. We are thrilled with Good Guys' work. We needed three Italian Cypress trees removed - two dead, one dying. We also needed our oak tree pruned and sealed. I got a call back the same day and they sent Mike out for an estimate within about a week. Mike knows his stuff, from regulations and standards about pruning (how many feet a tree needs to be from the street/your house/your roof) to types and behaviors of trees. He made a couple of suggestions for additional trimming but didn't pressure us to sign off on them, just explained that the proximity of the trees to our house was providing squirrels with a place to take shelter. We were confident that all work proposed was appropriate. Mike said it would take about a week to get a crew out. Well, the very next day a big thunderstorm completely uprooted one of the Italian Cypresses, which blocked our driveway and presented a safety hazard. I called Mike and he was able to move our service to the very next working day. The crew of 4 arrived promptly that morning and worked quickly. They were courteous and polite, explaining the work to be performed and making sure we agreed on all work before they began. Then we were able to inspect the work as soon as they were complete, before payment. We were completely satisfied and I can't stop looking at pictures of my house now--the oak tree looks gorgeous! From Austin, Texas, not from San Francisco, CA Called Good Guys to come out and look at a very large live oak in our front yard, estimated to be ~150 years old. Certified Arborist "Nick" came out (5/29) and assured us the tree did not have oak wilt. Suggested a fungicide treatment ($909.30) and a nutrient treatment ($356.79) and we should see a big improvement in 5-6 weeks. The time goes by with no improvement. Nick comes back out (7/18), "Lets try a insect/bug treatment!" ($257.23). The tree is still declining. Nick texted back "Let me talk to my co-worker. Time passes. I text Nick, but I get no response! I text him again a couple of days later, but this time I get a text back, "Nick no longer works here!" So Certified Arborist Sean comes out and does his assessment. Picks up a few leaves and says "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but looks like the tree has oak wilt. He leaves saying he too will talk to some other people to confirm. Sure enough, it's oak wilt. I do not know what it takes to become a "Certified Arborist", but as rampant as oak wilt is in the Central Texas area, a "Certified Arborist" should be able to diagnose it!!! 1) I guess Good Guys didn't do their due diligence when they hired "Nick". 2) They send "Nick" out and he miss diagnoses the problem. 3) I spend $1,613.32 for treatments that would have no affect on a tree with oak wilt! Apparently, the only treatment for oak wilt is Alamo Propiconazole. And it is just a treatment, not a cure. I tell Sean I'm pretty pissed for spending $1,613.32 for a missed diagnoses. His response is "Well, without getting into it, that is why "Nick" is no longer with us. Like with any business, sometimes you just get a bad apple." Really!! Good Guys never offered to make this situation right monetarily, but just left me with an attitude of, "Oh well, sorry!" Be careful.....be very careful. Don't get screwed like I did!! read more

Overall a good service, though they tried to milk me for $2700 initially. After negotiantion they agreed to $1350 all in. Probably could have gotten better price but that was my counter offer. That offer came after 3 slightly lesser quotes on their end. $2700 to $2300 to $2100 then they accepted my offer. It was my what I thought the service was worth. Please do your due deligience with their quote. They also add 3.5% to any credit card payment and even a 1% fee for ACH payment which is pretty much free. I called to complain but they didn't budge. It's buried in their quote but it's my responsibility to look that over so I take responsibility for that. Still 3.5 % is the highest CC fee I have ever seen... I highly recommend Good Guys Tree Service! Today they had a 9 man crew that pruned all my low-hanging branches, including those growing over the neighbors roof and driveway. In addition, they raised the canopy up to about 12 foot and now my roof line is clear! The whole job only took 1.5 hours and they left my yard in great shape. We rented our house out for ten years and when we finally moved home, found our property manager hadn't stopped 'volunteer' trees from growing up and damaging our gutters, or branches from beating up our chimney. GOOD GUYS sent Jerry, who explained what we needed, and gave us options for now, and what we might want to do for maintenance and improvement. Daniel and the crew showed up and worked hard in the Texas summer heat wave. They were fast, but careful, thinning the trees the right way, cutting down the volunteers, and explaining simple ways to deal with the stumps so close to the house. The crews aren't contractors, they work for the company which means they're insured. Most companies use contract crews which means if someone has an accident on the property, the homeowner is liable. Because Good Guys hires their crews, they're covered by workman's comp and insurance. They weren't out of line on price, either. We'll need maintenance (tree branches trimmed over the roof) in a few years, and we'll call these guys. read more

Good Guys did a great job last year removing the many limbs high up in my oak trees after the ice storm. I was out of town a lot at the time, and they fit me in when I was able to be at home. In addition, they didn't just talk safety, the crew actually relentlessly followed their safety protocols. They were also fair on price during a busy time for them. Review from July 2021 service UPDATE I originally had Good Guys Tree service trim all of my trees and remove a maple in March 2021 and they did a great job which is why my original review was a five star (details below). I recently contacted them to come back out to retrim my Bradford Pear tree in the front yard. It was not trimmed aggressively enough the first time and was getting heavy with leaves. When the arborist came out to look at the tree I discovered a significant crack on the street side of the tree (on a Friday). A very alarming crack. I am sure the tree was weakened from the ice storm and the weight of the leaves made it worse. I contacted the arborist later that evening with concern about this tree cracking and hurting someone walking by. I tried to put signs up for people to avoid walking under the tree. My arborist said he would come by on Sunday and take some weight off. Never showed up and didn't call. I stressed all weekend worried about this tree cracking and hurting someone. Didn't hear from him until Monday with the quote and that he couldn't come on Sunday as he couldn't find a chain saw (an arborist without a chain saw?). Yes I should have contacted them if they didn't trim it enough the first time. I am not the expert here they are, you would think with this being such a large Bradford they would have been more aggressive. They were with my other trees? I am including the tree pic of before and after trim for reference. I ended up needing to just have them remove the tree. Just for reference, when they trimmed in March my cost was $1186 to cut down a silver maple with stump grind and aggressively trim 4 Bradford pears. The quote to remove this tree was $866??? For a repeat customer and they didn't trim it right the first time? I tried unsuccessfully to have the owner Bob call me back - he refused. He had Casie call (?) who left me kind of a condescending voice message. My arborist was very unresponsive to text and VM to discuss. Their reason for the higher quote was "due to labor increase and the housing market". Honestly if other companies hadn't been so busy and it was a safety issue I would have used someone else do it. I will say that my only life line with the company to get this scheduled was Daniel. He really went out of his way to keep me posted on everything. He called and texted and got me on the schedule as soon as possible. Otherwise I would have left a one star review. The crew also did a quick and efficient job in removing the tree and clean up. Wowwww what a superb company! We called them last week and they came by yesterday to look what had to be done. Couple of dead trees needed to be taken down, other huge trees needed to be trimmed. Have never seen a tree company like this. They did the job perfectly, with 10 guys all teamed up, knowing exactly what each person had to do. So I requested an estimate back in April for a job to be completed AFTER July due to my HOA's strict Oak wilt policy. When I called them back a week ago (in September) I was told the estimates were only good for 30 days and that Tim would need to come out again. So he did and gave me an estimate for $100 more. I didn't add anything to the original April estimate, everything stayed the same but now it was $100 more expensive. Tim tried to explain that they had a new boss who was raising their prices because the crew was really good at their job. I requested for my original estimate to be honored since (a)No one told me proposals are only good for 30 days (b)It was written on the job estimate that this job was going to be completed in July. Tim honored the original price quote and schedule me the following week. I feel this wait time and haggling was unnecessary therefore the 4-stars. The crew was amazing! They really follow the directions on the job proposal. My trees look so healthy after the trim. I can't wait to see how much fuller they will appear in 6 months (or next summer). I really hope the new boss pays them well because the workers are what makes this company amazing and because he has been raising prices. read more

I was very disappointed in my tree service. They totally hacked my trees, making them very unsightly, even killing several limbs on one! tried to request a refund, or get them to do any work to prevent inevitable falling limbs but "they don't do refunds" and wouldn't offer any other assistance. They also wasted a ton of my time scheduling multiple unnecessary consultations after the initial service; some of their reps saying "I don't even know why they sent me out here". I was given no formal apology for the service I received and I would not recommend them to my network. Scheduling and communication issues were definitely there, too. read more

I've been using them for years and they have consistently done a good job for me. They were pretty fast to schedule (like next day after the consult) and were in and out very quickly. The only downside I can say is because I am in Leander (out of their general area I guess) there is a $750 minimum. Not a problem this time, since I had to get a dead tree removed, but I will be pushing to reach that number in the future. Our first Good Guys Tree Service work to clear dead wood on 5 (30'+) tall trees a few years ago was thorough, efficient, careful of property, including a complete cleanup. Based on that satisfying experience I chose Good Guys for 11/2022 removal of a 30'+ dying Hackberry and another tree's dead branch extraction, in a 13' wide space, abutting sides of two houses, atop power lines to one house, and over a property line fence. In both jobs, estimators, most recently James, (11/1/2022 job) identified proposed work with a laser pointer, showing branches for removal. He identified two areas of "imminent risk " along our side yard property line; one, of dangling dead branches above power line, fence, and also a neighbor's split branch over our street. After agreeing to the contract, two storms further severed and exposed broken limbs posing increased hazards. I called Nick at Good Guys to reevaluate this hazard, and update our contract to include broken limb removal. The day of my call, Nick sent Justin and Sean to assess the added work. Good Guys 11 person crew safely, and efficiently removed 30'+ high dangling branches above power line and fence, while simultaneously cutting down the adjacent dying Hackberry from this 13' wide space. I watched their exacting procedures with awe and appreciation. Each crew member worked with meticulous awareness of all tree and branch removal activity; assisting strategic lowering of branches, and tree trunks to the ground where they immediately sawed and removed all debris; carrying all through our gate to the grinding truck on the street. The main task of tree take down and dead branch removal progressed to the front yard for additional deadwood clearing of 2 other 30' tall trees. The seamless and precise work of the crew was unceasing, until the entire job was complete. At each job Good Guys followed the contracted list of work. Justin and Levy supervised the 11/1/2022 crew, methodically checking the contract list of all dead/broken limbs, and tree to be removed. Crew parked their truck infront front of our driveway blocking our cars in. (??!!) We could not leave. We had to call them and ask did you tell your crew we cancelled? Oh yes, they said. We told them. Then why are they here and did not know? Hmmmmm. So we said please nicely tell your crew to leave. Ok. We had some unruly, very tall crepe myrtles surrounded by overgrown vegetation that were encroaching on our roof between our home and our neighbor's. Damage to roof tiles as well as squirrel and roof rats had chewed their way into our attic in the past. Minimal trimming of these trees had occurred sporadically. It was time to call on experts because there were HVAC units and plenty of windows between both homes as well a terraced, stone wall complicating the scene. The Good Guys Tree Service sent over their Arborist, Sean, to evaluate our trees, take pictures of the project, and make recommendations. We were so impressed with the friendly and professional evaluation and estimate that we hired this locally owned company.
