Oh Good JuJu! I feel so bad for you. I feel like you've crumbled under the weight of your success. It's really not your fault, but man that 5 star rating has GOT to go. See, Good Juju has always only been open on the first weekend of every month, in order to restock their store with quality antiques and vintage/retro merchandise. That makes perfect sense, and for a low rent area, it's a sound business plan. The problem is, it was TOO successful, and now there are like 12 other giant stores in the neighborhood that do the same thing. And frankly, many of them do it better. I have sympathy, because unique, funky antiques are definitely in rare supply, and I feel like the people who curate this store have to put a lot of effort into finding good merch. There may just not be as much of it out there anymore. Every time I go down to the West Bottoms for the first weekend antique thing, I make sure and stop at Good Juju. I still do like it. But there are a handful of other stores that I vastly prefer. Thanks for starting a great trend, Good JuJu. Now just see if you can find a way back in front of it. read more

After a day of searching through the antique shops along antique row and being all "woe is me for I cannot afford anything here" (I still can't stop thinking about that green desk for over 3K. Being that my car cost *half* of that, well, let's just say that's out of my budget), imagine my joy upon entering Good JuJu. You see, I have an obsession with things from the past. You'll find a good amount of vintage in my closet and quite a few vintage pieces of furniture in my house and possibly one or two antiques (the *general* rule is that antique items are 100 + years). I would love to have more such items in my home, but I simply cannot decide what era is my favorite. You might find me drooling over a mid-century modern living room set, buuut I can't say that I could make that commitment because that's not going to go with my Victorian lamp or my art deco coffee table. It's really difficult to choose so I tend to just pick pieces pre-mid century, mix that in with some modern pieces and call it a style. But I would love something a bit more pristine. Maybe some day when I rightfully claim my castle along Ward Parkway, I can have rooms that are pristine. Until then, I'll decorate our 100 year old rental in my typical style, even if it afflicted with a personality disorder. Voi-la Good JuJu! Oh my *heavens*!! I was so excited to peruse each and every booth and their treasures, all in pristine to good to used and abused but still quite charming condition. Such as: those rubber animals that kids played with in the 40s, Christmas kitsch, glassware, vintage roller skates (avec key!), but furniture is where they who grace Good JuJu truly shine. Around every corner I was gasping for air and then when I found my dream enamel top table, I almost knew what it was like to reach a state of nirvanic bliss. Such tables cost upward of 300 dollars in New York. At Good Juju it was marked 120. A lovely 50s grey and pink kitchen table with chairs would be so lovely if only we had an eat-in kitchen. Now on to the dressers and Hoosier cabinets! The selection ranges from turn of the century to mid-century, all reasonably priced. My problem, of course, I could not choose! Luckily they are open again next Saturday. We were good today. Despite me wanting to replace every item in our house with "new" stuff from here, we took measurements of two Hoosier cabinets, made mental notes for a buffet in the dining room, bookmarked the enamel table and purchased a metal fan and a saucy red/black fringe lamp with a vintage base for only 12 dollars. Keep in mind Good JuJu has limited hours (they are open First Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and sometimes they'll add on another Saturday or two during the month. Call to check. read more

I am from New Orleans, and two years ago I moved to Kansas city to start college even though I knew no one in Kansas City. I got an apartment, needed furniture, and decide to check out good juju, not realizing it was on a day they were closed. I roll up, the artists are there, they let me in to view EVERYTHING even though I came on a day that they were technically closed. They even had to call the manager to get approval on letting me in. These artists are some of the most talented, kind, and generous people I have met to this day. Some of them gave me furniture for free because I was a college student. Some of them gave me their contact information because they knew I was alone in Kansas City. A very nice couple even brought my bed frame to me and helped me set it up at my apartment. Please, if you ever have the chance, go and visit these wonderful people at their amazing store, you won't be disappointed. read more

This little whimsical store at the edge of the 12th St Bridge in the West Bottoms is a delight for the eyes. Upon first entering, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. My thought was that it would have tons of cute, overpriced local stuff that just kind of sat around your house with no real use and some clothing. Well, I was half right. Good JuJu has wonderfully cute stuff and best of all, none of it is overpriced and you'll find yourself inevitably needing something there. The outside is extremely deceiving. Walk in and you expect to enter a tiny store. Instead, it's this huge mammoth, warehouse-like space that's fancied up. There's tons of stuff with which to decorate/furnish your home. And practical too! Everything is antique, vintage, midcentury and/or repurposed but in such a lovely way. Different artists bring in what they've fixed up and it sells in this store, which, unfortunately, is only open once a month (first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the month). But this just gives them time to collect the best treasures around. Some of the great items I saw there: repurposed wine and glass rack, beautiful, ornamental mirrors, dressing tables, bedroom dressers, lots of lamps and just adorable knick knacks. If you need to add a little more flair to your home, head here, but just on the first weekend of the month. read more

This seems like it's going to be an unpopular rating but Good JuJu was so hyped for so long that it would have been impossible to meet expectations. The reality is though: if I hadn't heard so many great things about JuJu, I'd still be unimpressed. Good JuJu is essentially a more carefully curated flea market. A flea market that just sells home decor. A flea market that just sells home decor, only on the first weekend of the month. There a half dozen other places in Kansas City that do the same thing every day, it's unforgivingly restrictive to hope that visitors will plan a weekend around visiting your business because you won't be open for another month if they miss it. What are you doing for an entire month while you're closed? Are you in this or not? Somehow this has become "a thing". A recent weekend I wanted to spend with my mother shopping in some of the cool places around town that I know are there. This doesn't happen very often and she was VERY excited to spend time with one of her adult kids who for too long had been busy with work and life. A Yelp search uncovered more than a handful and one-by-one they were eliminated because it was the LAST weekend of the month - not the first. Sorry, Mom. This might be forgivable had the experience the next weekend been amazing. It was cool. A lot of time obviously goes into curating the items for sale. Not a month. It wasn't that amazing. read more

Good JuJu, Good Lord..I think I may cry. But before I do, please let me hug every single booth owner in this place for finding timeless antiques and turning them into my-soon-to-be living room/kitchen/bedroom treasures. The feeling I got after being in Good JuJu is the exact same feeling I got when I walked into Anthropologie for the first time at the ripe age of twelve. This place reminds me of Anthropologie, except better because it's everything ORIGINAL that Anthro mimics and the price tag at Good JuJu is so reasonable! (I told my mom Good JuJu is like Anthro on sale) To give you a better idea, I'm talking about original dressers from the 40's, 50's, 60's that have been sanded down painted beautiful colors like chartreuse, turquoise, and sunset orange!! I had the privilege of buying an end table from the 1970's that had been painted a deep turquoise. (This did not match anything in my house, but I'm willing to redecorate my entire house in Good JuJu from this point forward). The price tag? $47. My mom said, "I'm sure you could have talked her down." My response: "I would have offered her $50". But I gave her $47 and used my other three bucks to buy a cookie jar that had been hand painted in an array of jewel tones. I love this place, clearly. The first weekend of every month is now reserved for some heavy shopping and heavy petting somewhere entirely, and utterly, Good. read more

Bittersweet* qualifies the emotions I felt after leaving here. This treasure trove of whimsy that reminded me how it felt to be a kid in a candy store. A candy store where the candy has morphed into beautiful pop colored chandeliers, refinished French provincial chairs, mid-century modern coffee tables and buffets. Trinkets once beloved by others, ready to pass into another hand to be loved. The best part about this place is that it is only open once a month over a weekend. And it's good because anticipation makes everything less bitter and more sweet. *I'm bitter because I live too many states away. read more

People have commented that its not as good as it used to be - I'm a fairly recent transplant to the KC area and I think it's awesome! Great finds, beautiful work and so many eye catchers! Good JuJu was my first experience with the West Bottoms' "First Weekend" shopping extravaganza. I was still new to KC and had just gotten used to having the first Friday of every month dedicated to the Crossroads when the bf mentioned this shopping phenomenon. I was curious about this first weekend only store and agreed to check out. I was admittedly also very interested in what possible finds were to be found in an old building down in the West Bottoms. Located just north of the west end of the Twelfth Street Bridge, this store is sitting on prime real estate. Years ago when we first visited, I think there may have only been one or maybe two other stores down there, now there are many, many more, and food trucks! The merchandise here really seems to be thought out, not just a piling of old junk that they hope someone will find a use for. Salvaged furniture, old ladders, vintage clothing, all kinds of interesting pieces. The bf and I have found many things here and found them at great prices. The staff here are excellent. Knowing that inventory has a very punctuated time to be moved, they are more than willing to assist any way they can. When we purchased a dresser, they happily delivered it to us in the Market for a very fair price. Now that the entire shopping event every month has become so popular, Good JuJu is crazy crowded! But don't let that deter you from checking it out, the crowds are drawn from the excellent word of mouth that has certainly been spread by happy customers such as myself. read more

They've figured it out. Here is how sucked in I was on my first visit....I purchased a desk. I do not live in Kansas City. In fact, I don't live in Missouri or Kansas. I live in California. I did not need that desk, but it was such an awesome deal, it needed to come home (to my friend's house until I can someday use it). ha! The whole West Bottoms revival is worth looking into. Thanks to reality TV, everyone believes that there are treasures yet to be discovered and there is, in a dusty barn somewhere. Come here and enjoy already discovered items, some which have been re purposed. Unfortunately some furniture and larger pieces are not as common as smaller accessories. Furniture in abundance are items like small tables, lockers, shelves, trunks..... If you appreciate character, bringing something to life and creating an environment that doesn't scream straight from IKEA, then you must go. The problem? Hella crowded with amateur shoppers like goofy old men, screaming brats and post "one night stand" couples. People are jamming up the aisles like JuJu is free. Back the hell up Mr. Magoo. You weren't interested in beat up tables before The KC Star article came out! Damn you GPS!!! Go early to miss the afternoon crazies and enjoy all the other hidden nooks and crannies in the West Bottoms! You will spend the day. read more

Another solid, fun 4 star shopping location in the Bottoms - YAY! This place is huge, and it was definitely doing a brisk trade the day we stopped in. Good JuJu had been on my radar for awhile, but it seemed like I always forgot about it when it was actually open...not this time, my friends! It was a teeny bit difficult to find parking because it was so busy - late in the day on a Saturday, at that. Always a good sign, if you ask me. When we went in, I was immediately amazed at how big Good JuJu is inside - I could've spent a lot more time in there browsing than I actually did. This is the sort of place that makes me want to get MUCH more creative than I actually am - there are little treasures everywhere; everything from jars of vintage buttons, to matchbooks, to old containers...and that's just the small stuff. Being there reminded me of when I was a kid, visiting our elderly neighbor - she'd always let us try on her jewelry or poke around in the basement, and seeing all of the interesting stuff in Good JuJu brought all of those memories back. There was all kinds of furniture that I wish we had the room for, and my husband was enthralled with the old books and tools. There were even things from our childhood - we're not that old, so it was funny to see what we both remembered from our younger years, and to see that things from our youth are apparently now early vintage! Good JuJu is another place where there are lovely surprises around every corner - that old combination lock just hanging on the wall is still on my mind, and I wonder how it would look on MY wall! I'm hoping it'll still be there the next time we're in, but if not, I'm sure I'll find plenty of other treasures to bring home. read more

I'm not your typical antique shopper, but I was going to be spending the morning in the West Bottoms scouting out photo shoot locations and saw on their Facebook page that Good JuJu would be open as well. What the hell, I thought, I've always wanted to check it out so it was as good a day as any to head over there. Holy cow, there were A LOT of people! Parking is obviously a bit of a problem during their First Weekend sales. I'm not ever very concerned about parking and I'm not afraid to walk, but if you are, just make sure you don't park in the Restaurant Depot parking lot because I've heard they're quick to tow Good JuJu customers. We parked right across 12th street in a gravel lot and while we had to dodge a bit of traffic crossing 12th st., it wasn't too painful. There were people crammed into this place so tight, you just have to kind of move with the flow. I get a little people-clausterphobic so I stepped out a couple of times. But I did manage to find a fabulous pink depression glass pitcher and my cousin found a dress, earrings and a couple of belts. Loots of cool stuff! And everything seemed really well-priced. It was almost too much to take in and we probably could have stayed for hours but the crowd became too much for me to deal with for too long. I would love to come back here on a less busy day. They keep their Facebook page updated frequently, so I'll keep an eye out for a time they're open that's not part of their big weekend sale each month. read more

I wouldn't call myself an expert or anything, but I've been to a lot of different vintage/antique stores in KC. Good JuJu is my favorite of all of them, so far. The store is pretty well organized, with enough space to actually move around without feeling like you're going to knock something over with every step, like other places. There isn't so much stuff in there that you get overwhelmed and miss things because they're piled up/packed in too tight. The quality of merchandise feels a step above from most other places. There were gorgeous pieces of vintage furniture everywhere, with prices MUCH less that I expected. I walked out with an awesome vintage fire extinguisher and cake pan for about $40, which was quite reasonable, in my opinion. They take credit cards and are quite friendly as well - great spot for vintage shoppers! read more

I must admit I have avoided the West Bottoms, probably because I don't love the "hype". But I love vintage and antique stuff and my friends kept raving about the stores down there and showed me some of the stuff they picked up, so I thought it would be best to go with an open mind and see if I could find anything cool. Good JuJu is sort of the namesake of this neighborhood. I expected to be blown away, but maybe the hype and popularity was a disadvantage to them. Their space was laid out in a standard antique mall fashion. The building isn't all that exciting in comparison to other stores, so the place that should make up for it is the merchandise. While I did see some pretty cool items, I didn't come across anything I absolutely had to have and if it peaked my interest it was definitely on the pricey side. I'll probably still come back to check this place out on another trip to see if it was a fluke, but as of right now, it wasn't anything super special. read more

I've been to Good Juju's First Friday/Saturday events 5+ times in the last year, and I've watched this place explode in popularity. I've found some incredible vintage finds here -- industrial typewriter tables, art, beautiful art deco lamps -- but in the last few go-rounds, Juju has been stocking more freshly-lacquered, brightly-colored pieces of furniture that have obviously been repainted by someone in their garage in the last month. I'm willing to look past this err in judgment simply because you can still find some excellent old stuff, but the last several times I've been have been so crowded that it's difficult to get any elbow room, let alone shop. I love Juju, but I must admit, I'm pining for its less popular days. read more

Just got a gorgeous silver velvet circa sixties sofa here this weekend. It would look completely at home in a Vincent Price movie. It just begs for some gaudy velvet pillows. I feel like I won the lottery. Liberace would love it. I LOVE IT!! I knew I would find the perfect sofa here though. It was just a matter of time. I never leave Good JuJu empty-handed. I've been a fan since they first opened, underneath my friend's loft in the West Bottoms, like 4 years ago. We all were confounded that anyone would think they could sell antiques in the West Bottoms, but boy did they prove us wrong! It's wonderful to see green businesses thriving in what many felt was a seedy and unlivable location. ( Though I have to say, I think it was a bit cooler before before all the suburban traffic, but that's life since they have the $$.) It's worth braving the congestion these days. It's remarkably cheaper than most antique malls, but you do have to get there early. Good JuJu is only open on the first weekend of the month, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and occasionally an extra Saturday here and there. That said, I wouldn't suggest getting there right when they open @ 9 am on first Friday, because there are lines out the door. Yup. Crazy. And the people in line are mostly suburban ninjas who will knock you down to be the first to get that red lacquered trunk in the corner. Be careful. AND Park in a designated area. Don't park in the Restaurant Depot parking lot. They will tow you! They towed me several months ago, but I luckily saw them dragging my car off just in time and was able to chase down the tow truck driver and negotiate a deal. $75 for their trouble was outrageous, but it could have been well over $300 and a lot more grief had he gotten it down to the tow yard. Still, all that drama can't keep me away from this place. read more

I just couldn't take it any more. I've been trying to hold out on a trip to Good Juju until I actually needed some new furniture, but... well, I caved. So I went this Saturday at 9, and it was as glorious as I imagined. I wanted everything. Alas, I am low on funds right now, so I had to make do with the most perfect crab ash tray -- my grandmother had the exact same one when I was growing up, and I think it'll be a perfect place for rings. One friend got a darling little pantry, in addition to the trunk and dresser she got last time. I wavered on a few items, but held firm (this time). Next month I'll have a bigger apartment to furnish, so I'm going to start saving now. Can't wait! read more

What an awesome little place! A little out of the way in the west bottoms, near where the haunted houses are, but well worth the trip. I found myself walking through, smiling, laughing, pointing and exclaiming "I had one exactly like that!" Or some similar statement. On October 2nd, while shopping at Good Ju Ju, I was followed, falsely accused of stealing, followed into the parking lot, recorded, and had the police called on me during a very busy First Friday event. I decided to wait for the police since I didn't steal anything; I didn't have anything to worry about. When they arrived, they found that I had been falsely accused. The owner never admitted to being wrong, even though her staff admitted to the fact that they didn't see me steal anything. The owner didn't apologize despite not finding any stolen merchandise. read more

Great selection of goods and furniture. Especially if you're into 50s decor. They have some great couches, hunches, entertainment sets, and coffee tables. You can definitely complete a room at this store. If you're into customer service however, don't bother. I've never been dealt with so passive- aggressively for sitting on a damn sofa. Was told that unless I was taking it home it wasn't for "lounging". Maybe they should change their "JuJu" read more

Full disclosure here: I haven't been to all the antique shops in the West Bottoms. In fact, I've only been to three, so my basis of comparison isn't as cultivated as other reviewers. That being said, I loved Good JuJu. Compared to antique shops outside of this area, the prices are amazing. Compared to the other two shops I visited on the same day, the prices are better. I like their inventory way more than other places. It's fresher, younger and more diverse. The store is quite large and has an excellent mix of styles and eras. It gets stupid busy and the staff is always running around, so customer service isn't the best; however, this is the very rare situation where the inventory trumps the staff. read more
