Every detail was really thoughtful, including a special charm Nick gave my mother and I at the end that is cut in half, one piece to stay with my grandmother & one with us. They checked in on us at the perfect times, asking if we needed coffee or water. They greeted all of our family and gave their condolences. Perhaps the most touching aspect was how Nick helped us get my Grammy home. There was an issue back home in CA with her death certificate (nothing to do with Alfieri, it was her doctors), and she almost did not make it back to PA, her final resting place. My grandfather passed away relatively quickly, and we hadn't put much thought into a funeral before meeting with Bill after my grandfather passed. Bill and his son Billy are kind, thoughtful, organized, transparent, patient, and prepared -- all of which came in handy as our family was just trying to keep our heads on straight and sort out how to proceed. As genuine, kind, and caring people, the Schleifers are perfect for the line of work that they're in. Their memory for details is impeccable, and they took all the time we needed to chat about whatever topic was at hand. Although they deal with death all the time, they aren't hardened to it - they poured out an incredible amount of care and compassion to our family and friends, and were unfailingly giving, kind, and helpful. The fact that they can do this time and again for each family, for decades, speaks to theIr skill and the strength of the family's character. I was impressed by how modern their operations are. Their reputation in the community is strong, and rightfully so. Given that, they could certainly just deliver the same kinds of services that they have for decades, without changing much, and be perfectly fine. Instead, it's clear that Bill and Billy invest a lot of time and energy to be sure what they offer is competitive, modern, and the best of the best. They aren't content to just coast along on the strength of their good reputation; they earn that reputation again with each service they provide. Their website has beautifully modern personalized obituaries, tribute options, and integrations with florists so that friends and family were able to easily send arrangements to the funeral home. Bill also told us about things he'd learned from others and read in his trade association's newsletter around coronavirus (more on that below). They've won awards and distinctions for their work, and it was clear to me that they have their finger on the pulse of good new innovations in the industry. The team runs a flawless operation. Their turnaround time for everything was amazingly fast, yet we never felt rushed through anything. And although I'm sure their core processes are the same for each funeral, they were able to incorporate an exceptional amount of personalization so that we could have the service and experience we desired. The Schleifers quickly and capably organized an amazing, perfect funeral that made our hearts feel full. Since we had a funeral in mid-2020 and hadn't been to any services since coronavirus, we had some questions about how that would affect our plans. We're extremely conservative with our approach to the virus, but felt we should leave our "bubble" for the first time to have a small gathering. We didn't know what to expect before we met with the Schleifers, but once we did, we were instantly reassured by all the thought they've put into their coronavirus response: - The funeral home was spotlessly clean (as always) - The guest book table and other areas were all thoughtfully stocked with sanitizer, clean pens (and a spot for used pens), single-use materials, etc. Everything was frequently cleaned. - The visitation rooms had HEPA air purifiers and great overall HVAC ventilation - Local rules around capacity and mask-wearing were enforced - The services were live-streamed for those unable to attend in person I have high standards and can be a stickler for details. I plan, research, and notice a lot, and when it came to my grandfather's care these past several months, I've stopped at nothing to ensure he had the best of everything. I was absolutely blown away by how much the Maloy-Schleifer team did, all within 3 short days of planning. Not only did they do an amazing job with all we expected, they thought of countless other things we hadn't, and not a single thing was wrong or overlooked. I learned just how much goes into a good funeral, and they executed each piece amazingly. Bill also provided helpful, independently-written materials on what comes next in grieving and winding down an estate, as well as personalized materials that recapped our day at the funeral home and remembered my grandfather. They really thought of everything. Bill's personal, thoughtful, independent, concierge-style services go above and beyond what I would expect, and are truly unparalleled. If you're in need of a funeral home, stop reading and go give the Schleifers a call. You'll be glad that you and your loved one are in such good hands. I trust them fully and can't imagine going anywhere else in the future. Their prices seem very competitive, and feel like a bargain when I look at how much they did for us. We discussed our pest issues and he got to work. He was here for about 30 - 45 mins. His prices are very reasonable ($190 for our treatment) and he does a thorough job. We had inside house treatment for spiders, creepy crawlies, and mice (that are sure to arrive at the weather turns cooler next month) and we had exterior carpenter bees and carpenter ants treatments on our cedar house and on several backyard trees. Under the sink in the bathroom and vent check valve was missing. The contractor plumber never installed it when the house was built 2 years ago. He said he could fix it right now and gave a very reasonable price. I said go ahead and within 30 minutes he had fixed a problem I had been dealing with for the last two years. He was very knowledgeable and even found a pipe that was not glued when he was installing the valve and fixed that as well I would highly recommend this business for their expertise and value for what they do. I stopped by Deer Creek to pay my respects and say my own goodbyes. Deer Creek is much bigger than I expected. It may have been the lack of trees or tall bushes that can break up the long site-lines in a typical cemetery, but the gravestones seemed to go on forever, up and down the small slopes. The grounds were spotted with dashes of color from the flags or flowers placed near the markers. I noticed the well-paved, large roads that take visitors to all corners of the grounds. There are street signs and street names on the intersections. I've not ever noticed that before in a cemetery, but it gives it the feeling of a small town. If I consider, also, the other markers designating areas within those blocks, almost like house numbers, I suppose it is like a mini-town. A well-laid out town. Bittersweet. As I roamed, looking for the one place I needed, I saw the well-groomed grass and nicely maintained grounds. You can move from the older to the more recent without noticing. Deer Creek obviously chooses not to save money by letting things becomes overgrown. Good job. After several minutes, I gave up and stopped by the office to ask for directions. The man working that day found the information on the computer, gave me the location, and pointed me in the general direction. Fewer than 5 minutes. Efficient. It's a nice cemetery. Next time I'm in the area, I may like it. But right now, in this moment, at this time: I dislike it. Cancer sucks.

Calvary is the third and final of the large cemeteries in PGH that I've visited. Although it's not…read moremy favorite large cemetery in PGH (that would be Allegheny Cemetery), it's nevertheless still a strong contender. It's unique in two major respects: (1) Its location on top of a hill between the Greenfield and Hazelwood neighborhoods and (2) Its status as the largest Catholic cemetery in PGH. I've visited Calvary Cemetery twice--once about a month ago, and more recently this past Sun.--and both visits have been quite pleasant and relaxing. Like Allegheny and Homewood Cemeteries, there is a variety of different styles of gravestones and monuments, although there didn't seem to be quite as many older ones as in those cemeteries. There is also at least one large mausoleum near the entrance, but I didn't go inside to check it out. Because the cemetery is on a hill, I was hoping for an unobstructed view down to the Mon River and the surrounding neighborhoods. Unfortunately, however, vegetation from trees obstructs the views in most directions, so I was only able to see peeks down the hill. In terms of size, Calvary seems a bit smaller than the other large cemeteries in PGH, and it doesn't offer as many amenities for living visitors (benches, ponds, etc.). The one thing that's a bit strange about this cemetery is the presence of several tall microwave communications towers that overshadow it on a plot of land adjacent to the cemetery. I realize that the placement of these towers is due to the topology, and that the cemetery has no control over their placement, but they do feel out of place in this otherwise peaceful and naturally beautiful cemetery. Despite these minor shortcomings, Calvary is a great place to take a stroll and check out some cool gravestones. If you happen to be in the area and enjoy exploring cemeteries or are looking for somewhere to take a walk that's different than the usual parks, check it out!
