Serving Our Kids currently feeds 3,500 kids in 70 schools who would otherwise go hungry. These children do not currently receive weekend food bags from any backpack or governmental programs. Serving Our Kids fills that gap. As volunteers, our group gets the weekend bags ready by filling them, assembly-line style. Since housing and meals are such a burden during times like that, this home becomes the most amazing relief for families. I've visited several times, and not only is the place absolutely clean, furnished, and accommodating, but the staff are the most wonderful people that truly care. I've been in contact with and met the CEO of the foundation, Jeff Gordon who is an amazing individual with a staff of caring people. Their love for the kids is unbelievable. They help out not only kids with cancer/sickle cell disease but their family as well since if one person in the family has a chronic illness, the whole family is affected (emotionally, physically, mentally and financially). Cancer, like other chronic illnesses, brings grief to the entire family. They provide counseling, monetary donations, food, etc. They have a camp near Pahrump where kids can be kids, forget about their illness and have fun for 2 weeks. The camp has a rock climbing wall, horses for kids to ride, games and activities. The social workers work with the kids and their family to make a memory book about the kids. There's a kid who had a superhero themed book. The stories are very touching and you'd seriously have to have a strong will to hold back the tears. Instead of buying a new purse, new shoes, new car - giving that money to something that's more meaningful might be the best thing to do. I've had a good life and it's only right to give back.

***Review 1300***…read more Working for MGM Resorts International, it is so awesome to hear that they are great contributors to the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, so when my wife was planning to volunteer her time at Camp Cartwheel at Torino Ranch, I immediately told her I wanted in. To give you an idea of what the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is about, here's a bit of info off of their pamphlet: "Established in 1993, the Mission of the NCCF is to provide social, emotional, educational, and psychological support services and programs to families of ALL children diagnosed with life threatening or critical illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell, hemophilia, renal disorders, and immunologic diseases and provide healing arts and wellness programs to adults touched by cancer. #F@!kCancer Many of us have lost a loved one or at least know of someone who is battling cancer, and knowing all this ahead of time as we made the trek to Torino Ranch made me a bit nervous, but very anxious to be with the kids as they were on the last day of their two weeks at Camp Cartwheel. Entering the gates at Torino Ranch, we parked at a designated lot and left all smartphones in our car (no service in the area, and no photography, especially of of the children are allowed)which is good, because if you ever get to volunteer at Camp Cartwheel, this is where you decompress from our chaotic usual surroundings, and just use your natural senses to take this memorable moment in without the constant distraction of technology. We first met up with Stephanie Parker, the Vice President of the NCCF who briefed us on what to expect during our visit and unexpectedly, tears started to flow as I heard sounds of the kids' innocent laughter and shouts of fun and excitement of children having a blast in the background(we haven't seen any of them yet at this point ) knowing the chronic illnesses that these kids were dealing with, this was their escape, their safe space, their "Disneyland" where they could just be themselves and not worry about getting weird stares and being made fun of. All kids and volunteers at Camp Cartwheel have nicknames, so no one really knows each other here, but strong bonds and friendships are made during the two week period. We got to see the kids in their element, as a dance party, volleyball game, and crafts were going on simultaneously. Kids also had scuba lessons at a nearby pool and were also putting the final touches on their beautiful artwork which are scheduled to be auctioned off during NCCF's 22nd Annual Profiles of Courage Gala at Bellagio 's Grand Ballroom on November 21st, 2015. Walking the grounds, it was like their little own town away from the outside world-Their little cabins, a beautiful greenhouse, a doctor's office in case of an incident or emergency, and even a little store where the kids get to shop for all kinds of stuff free of charge. Inside the store, we met "MOS",(Mother of Seven) who runs the store and is also a parent of a child who battled cancer. Telling us about her child's courageous battle which she lost at the age of 16, everyone was in tears. (My Yelp glasses came in handy!) We gathered outside the store and everyone got to make and eat their own ice cream using ziploc bags, ice, and salt. YUM! It was lunch time for the kids, and we were starting to feel like guests more than volunteers as we were treated to a delicious Beef Chili lunch complete with salad, dinner roll and tortilla chips. It was about this time where a little fella by the name of "Mariner" approached me, introduced himself, asked me and Wifey how our lunch was, and showed me his cool charms, bracelets, and necklace they made in art class, explained why he was wearing a tutu(yes, a dude with a tutu LOL!) with Seahawks colors(He was a huge fan of both Seattle teams, hence the tutu and nickname) While taking in the scenery as well as the experience so far, we were happy to contribute with a dessert buffet of store bought and homemade sweets which definitely put a smile on the kids' faces. We walked down to the lake after lunch where we were able to participate with the kids in their various activities-Kayaking on the lake, Rock Climbing Wall, and even "Dinosaur Egg" Paintball (Paint soaked sponges) against the kids. We also met CEO Jeff Gordon who thanked us for coming by and for MGM's continued support throughout the years. Our day had finally ended, as Stephanie explained that the goodbye ceremony is too sad and heartbreaking when the kids say their goodbyes and exchange phone numbers and info with each other, which is best leaving it as private time with families and volunteers. As we said our goodbyes, we were sent off with a NCCF information packet as well as a Camp Cartwheel shirt. The Nevada Blind Children's Foundation is a non profit organization. Which offers so many numerous…read moreactivities, tutoring, mentoring and summer camp for the children of Las Vegas who have a visual impairment. When I found out about this organization, my daughter was 5 yrs old and went to their summer camp as her very first interaction with the foundation. She absolutely loved it. She had never met other children just like her. Every since then, she's been apart of every one of their events, activities and special tutoring they offer. The Nevada Blind Children's Foundation has been our families answers to our prayers, in SO many ways. Thank you to the amazing staff for your love,support, time, dedication and genuine caring of my daughter all these years.

Bacon makes everything better, so how could I resist the chance to try a food truck devoted to it?…read more Blondie's Bacon Creations was one of many local food trucks that came to Sunset Park'd in 2016. You can't miss the blue truck with pictures of bacon (and a blonde), even though these guys were somewhat tucked away in a corner near the stage. The menu is mostly different variants of french fries and sandwiches, but I saw the Bacon Tater Balls ($6), a creation that they boast took 3rd place in the "Extreme Bacon Bite Challenge" (a quick Google search shows that it was held November 2015 last year and included restaurant chefs). This tray had 3 fluffy potato balls with bacon, green onion, and cheese that were deep fried in Panko breading and topped with a lemon sour cream. Although it's not the most exciting potato ball that I've had from a food truck, it was a contrast of textures and had enough bacon flavor. Blondie's Bacon Creations seems to be a solid food truck so far. I'll definitely check out some of their loaded french fries next time.

Looking for some naughty bacon treats? This is your place!…read more I tried Blondie's when they were outside of Bad Beat Brewery. I really like Bad Beat, but I was mostly there for the bacon. First, the couple that runs the truck is really nice. They are very welcoming. I ended up at the truck three different times and they were friendly each time. I even asked if there was any way that I could get a couple of items to go for my husband since he was stuck at work and missing out. They didn't skip a beat and wrapped up a couple of items for me to take home. I was even given instructions on properly warming the food if necessary. I had a sandwich that was melted cheese, bacon, egg, and jalapenos on sourdough. It was awesome. That combination was a winner. My coworker and I shared the Dumpster Fries which were my favorite item. It was fries, cheese, bacon, jalapenos, ranch dressing, and an over easy egg. The instructions were to crack the egg in the middle to let it make a gravy on the fries. You can't go wrong with this plan. We gobbled this up. I definitely brought an order of these back to my husband. For dessert I grabbed a couple of the chocolate chip pecan cookies from My Big Fat Cookie. The cookies were huge and one would have been enough for two people. The cookies were okay, but not overly flavorful. Maybe Blondie's should have a maple bacon dish for dessert?? Bacon for the win!
