Service was great. Someone greeted us as soon as we walked in. The cashier was engaging and thorough about what items were returnable and not. The store, including the bathroom, was clean and organized. They had a whole section of completely new items, so we spent way too much money, but the name brand active wear, bras, and belts would have been double elsewhere. This may actually be the worst Goodwill in the state. They don't follow the color of the week like the other goodwills, they don't do military discount, they don't do employee discounts for their own employees because you're from San Antonio and not San Marcos like we're across the Mason/Dixon line, then you buy a bunch of items and then find out, you gotta pay extra for a bag because they don't do bags.... and you can't return items on their color of the week. But don't worry, they have really nice new paint... I wonder how they can afford it? On top of all the things they don't do like everyone else... All the items are donated yet this place feels the need to be deceptive in the way they disclose the 50% off the color of the week, They have the signs in large colored words (that change weekly) 50% off. but in fine print they share the true discounted color of the week. making the sight impaired shopper overcharged for their items at check out. Like most Goodwills, the majority of the floor space is given over to clothes. It is a fairly large space and one added benefit is the fact that they are not displaying all their knickknacks in trays above the clothes. All of the knickknacks, glassware, home decor, and picture frames are set up on shelves at the rear of the store. The store is fairly clean and well merchandised and also they have a career center located here. read more

The people who work here are super sweet. But this goodwill is filled with Dollar Store junk and SHEIN clothes which are ridiculously marked up. I get it's a college town but if it's from the dollar store it should just be thrown or given to a shelter. read more

Goodwill hunting: The act of visiting a Goodwill thrift store and scavenging for peppercorns in a manure heap of used clothes, appliances, media, and Depends adult diapers*. My dad and I visited this Goodwill in San Marcos after an afternoon of barbecue gluttony in nearby Lockhart. Goodwill hunting is a crapshoot; you either leave empty handed or loaded with treasures. On this occasion, I'm happy to report that my dad and I both found several items of interest. Most Goodwills utilize floor space wisely, but I found this location to be lacking in charity shop feng shui, with the front of the store (check-out counters and candy) practically barren and the back of the place (electronics and media) cluttered and congested. The manager should use the sprawling, well-organized Goodwill located in Monument, Colorado as a blueprint. But I digress and nitpick; I went here looking for cool stuff, not to lecture disadvantaged Goodwill staff on optimum floor space utilization. This location came through in the areas that matter: variety, coolness, and unbeatable prices. In the music department, I picked up pristine CD copies of "True Stores" by Talking Heads, "Eat Me, Drink Me" by Marilyn Manson, and "The Best of Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians." Why these three CDs in particular, you ask? The answer: I wanted to be the first and only person to ever buy albums by Talking Heads, Marilyn Manson, and Guy Lombardo at the same time. I also picked up gently used copies of two David Cronenberg films that had somehow flown under my radar: "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises." The best part: the CDs and DVDs were only $1.99 each. The electronics department was a bit of a mess, but I enjoyed rifling through a sea of pea green, tobacco-scented alarm clocks from the early 70s. I was also happy to find a gently used XBox 360 Kinect for $5.99 and a somewhat rare joystick peripheral for the original Nintendo Entertainment System for $4.99. The latter item, the "Beeshu Ultimate Superstick," often fetches anywhere from $30 to $50 on eBay, so I made off like a bandit. If you go Goodwill hunting regularly, then you've no doubt conversed with your treasure hunting brethren; we Goodwillers just love to share our scores with likeminded folks. On this occasion, a precocious nine-year-old boy named Ethan noticed my interest in video games and struck up a conversation about Pokemon. In turn, I explained how to capture ghosts on film using a hacked XBox Kinect and a standard laptop computer. He was incredulous until I showed him video evidence captured by a friend of mine in the paranormal/ITC field. To Ethan's parents: I apologize for scarring your child for life, but please thank him for the lecture on Charmander's more esoteric abilities. The next time you find yourself on the outskirts of San Marcos, consider dropping by the local Goodwill. You'll probably find something cool, and you'll help support a good cause. *Why do so many Goodwills sell Depends? Did the boxes come from the estate of an adult diaper hoarder? I went to the store to return a defective CD. The store manager Teresa told me the sale of CD is final and won't issue me the credit (refund). When I purchase the CD, the cashier told me I can return it within 7 days. I then went to the Kyle store and they have no problem to issue me the credit. I have heard other cashiers told customer that they can return their purchases within 7 days of purchase on many occasions. The return policy posted in the store did not say the sale of CDs are final. I think Teresa is wrong about their store return policy. read more

I should have posted a photo because I am sure most will think I am BSing but I saw 2 Louis Vuiton bags waiting to be priced. Could they have been knock off counterfeits? I don't know , but I pulled a ton of Polo, Nautica, Banana Republic and other well made garments out of here. I suspect it may be due to the premium outlets right down the road perhaps? Many of the garments were either new or far less used than at other Goodwills. Once again, better quality, less used items, but most things here are about a dollar more per item. Got a call for non-military Halloween costumes/decorations for a school up north and decided to come here to start a package. Greeted enthusiastically upon entrance. Prices better than boutique, but not all items had a price tag. Fortunately I was shopping for multiple children/ages with no set list so continued on whenever that happened. Employees friendly, upbeat, chatty at checkout. For rounding my purchase up to the next dollar I saved 10% on the recycled Halloween costumes but not the new in-package stuff (which was a surprise to the cashier). It was a little awkward finding there was no bag for my purchases, and it made me glad I hadn't filled a cart. I like the programs Goodwill supports. For $61 I took home a lot compared to other establishments. There's some good costume stuff here for creative people. That's what's behind the three stars. The prices seem somewhat higher than most Goodwill locations in Texas & surrounding States with less than average quality (we travel often for Work & always stop at Goodwill Stores along the way). I would totally chalk that up to having an off day when we stopped by. But, was super surprised when the Cashier told us that this Store doesn't offer a Military Discount (not even on Veteran's Day). Ugh. Typical Goodwill store. Prices are too high for what it is. I think they justify the high prices by promoting the jobs and work skills that the place brings people who otherwise would find difficulty finding employment. Here's my thing. Please have these associates and management communicate and understand what is going on in the store and how things are being processed. I accidentally donated something with other items and contacted the store both by phone and in person 4 times, also leaving my number and info. Even spoke with management. Nobody knows what is going on. Employees are confused and act clueless. This is ridiculous. Can't anyone even bother to look into a bin about to be put on the floor? I'm really frustrated with donation centers like this. By the way, what is the deal with the over the top Halloween store decor? My 3 year old cringes at this each year. I've heard other children cry as well. There is no reason to take donated items and hang dolls from the ceiling painted in red to mimic blood or have doll parts in jars. Use your time more wisely and impart better job skills. read more

This GW is overpriced. They had a gray tag sale and you couldn't find any items with gray tags. Clothing was double what I pay at locations in Dallas. Shoes were marked up more as well. Maybe it's just me, but prices here are ridiculous. Every woman's shirt I saw was at least 6.99, even for completely torn and tattered ones that were stuck in there. The clothes they carry are mostly shirts that would either be worn by 12 year olds or by 80 year olds (in my opinion), meaning that everything has a horrendous pattern on the front, or was bedazzled. I've been to many Goodwills and thrift stores all around central Texas and this is a pretty awful one. I know you cant expect thrift stores to have anything trendy (I don't even dress trendy), but their selection is the worst, I couldn't even find anything I'd just wear as pajamas. I do give it 2 stars because it is a large store and people with different tastes MAY find what they're looking for. They also have a good amount of plus clothing. I've tried to give it a chance but it's bad. Most of their furniture is broken and more than you'd ever think to pay for it, and their household goods are cheaper at Walmart or Dollar Tree. All in all, not great. Drive to Austin for much better thrift stores. read more

Goodwill hearkens back to those bygone days of yore when the words "thrift store" actually meant somewhere people shop to be thrifty, not somewhere hipsters price gouge other hipsters seeking trendy/retro items to be ironic (further proof that hipsters ruin everything). It does not get much thriftier than Goodwill. They have a wide variety of gently used clothing for people of all shapes and sizes as well as shoes, furniture, books, and other household items. The last time the BF and I went there, I scored a sweet shirt and a set of six wine glasses and the BF got a pair of slacks and a button down shirt. I have never purchased anything here that was in poor condition and sometimes you can even find items that are brand new with the tags from the store still attached for a small fraction of the original price. We also donate items that we no longer use here and they make it as simple as possible with their drive-thru donation station. If you want a tax write off they have the paperwork for that as well and you can even fill it out at home so you don't have to hold up the line. Where else can you find somewhere that provides services that are both convenient and cheap? Very few places, I'm afraid. Oh, and hipsters! Last time I was there, I saw a framed poster of Ronald Reagan from his second presidential election campaign, circa 1985. It would be so ironic if you bought that and hung it on your wall. Not a single item of clothing on the ground or off it's hanger. The sizing on clothes was all very clear and not mix ups! The selection of clothing was pretty decent. I wish there was an option to only give store negative 5 stars. It was a hot summer day last summer when I was on my way to the Goodwill store. After parking my car I noticed a homeless man sitting on a curb in the parking lot next to the goodwill parking lot. He looked like he was in pain I asked him if everything was okay. He explained that sometime during the night shoes had been stolen. I asked him what size he wore and immediately went into goodwill to get him a pair of shoes. His poor feet are blistered and bleeding from walking on the hot Texas asphalt all the way to Goodwill store. Only to find when he had arrived that he had not enough money to purchase even the cheapest pair of flip flops. I witnessed the flip flops that he was speaking of when I was in the store. They were priced at $4.99 . the goodwill sticker for $4.99 was over the original stores sticker of $1.99. So here's goodwill charging $3 more then the original store had sold the item for. I found a pair of sandals $14.99 (i saw them later at Walmart for 10.99.), and approached the cashier with them. I was informed by the cashier that he would not sell me the sandals because he saw me speaking to the homeless man and thought I was buying them for him. I told the cashier but he was correct in his assumption and that it should not matter who I was buying the symbols for only that they were going to make money off of me more money then the sandals are even worth. I was told to leave the store and that I could not come back for 24 hours. I now tell everyone I know this horrible story about Goodwill stores having yo goodwill for a homeless man with bleeding blistered feet. I tell everyone I know to take their items to San Marcos thrift store. Ethan Marcos thrift store its back into the community 100% of their profits. That is where I took the horse down after being kicked out of goodwill and the cashier at San Marcos thrift store gave him a pair of shoes and socks and asked him if he needed anything else. Before this event took place I did have an issue with the electronics and appliances like toaster or blender that I had purchased at the San Marcos goodwill. You see you only get store credit so after finding out that all 5 of my appliances did not work and returning them for store credit I see on the shelf in the back all 5 of the appliances I had just returned the day before. Why would they put them back knowing now that they do not work? I'll tell you why because they can make hundreds of dollars off of one toaster if they can keep reselling it. I asked the manager why you 5 items we're back on the shelf and he said you cannot be sure that those are the same one. I don't know what's going on at this location, but the last 2 times I've been there, there is a completely overwhelming scent of, like, Irish Spring soap...as if they're pumping some kind of fragrance through the air system. A pretty decent Goodwill. The building is new so everything looks up to par. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The store layout needs some work. For example, they have the men's t-shirts not where the have the men's clothing but in a far corner behind housewares. Anyway, it's a well stocked, nice Goodwill if you're in the neighborhood and if you're not, it's not so much better or worse than any other so spare yourself the trip and go somewhere closer. read more
