There's been a lot of talk about Trosa Thrift store around town lately. I've seen it all over…read moresocial media so a friend and I decided to check it out on a Friday afternoon. Trosa is located on Peters Creek Hwy in the Food Lion strip center at the Clemmonsville exit. It's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking which I love. Right inside the door is their whole furniture section, they have tons of tables, chairs, dressers , etc. they even have a whole section of office specific furniture. The prices are very reasonable. This would be a furniture flippers paradise. Towards the back they have shelves of everything from pillows to whole sets of dishes, sports equipment and the most medical mobility equipment I've ever seen anywhere. I'd say, if you are in need of a walker, a bath seat or portable toilet for someone look here because they probably have it at a fraction of the cost it would be to purchase new or rent. The clothing is grouped all together but they aren't keeping it organized as well as it needs to be. All different sizes were mixed in together and I quickly got frustrated and gave up. Both of us had found an item in the kitchen area we wanted so we headed to check out. The workers were very friendly as well. I'll definitely be checking out Trosa regularly in the future. Trosa supports substance abuse treatment. If you want to donate to them, they offer pick up for larger items or you can bring your items to their donation drop off around the back of the store. Just follow the signs.

This used to be the best thrift store in Cabarrus County. Yes, used to be. It has gone downhill…read moreever since they reopened after C*vid. That's part of the problem too - all new staff due to firing the old staff during C*vid times...ones who had been there for years & were so sweet. The new manager is a guy who frequently complains openly about people shopping in the store, has literally complained about having to check my cart of stuff because I "got too much" and it'd take a while to scan it all in (I had maybe 6 books, a couple of shoes and some small nicknacks - it wasn't a lot). He's also changed sale hours - day of - closing early because he felt like it. He does not make people feel welcome to shop there - it's like we're bothering him to be in the store. Also, the pricing has gotten really bad - it's frequently at or above retail now, which is so sad since this stuff is always clearly used and *given/donated* to the store, but they grossly overprice it. Case in point: A used coffee grinder for $24.99 when it's new for $18.95 on Amazon or $19.98 at Walmart. The clothes have been really stained, hole-filled, torn and ripped lately. I really hate how bad the store is these days... I went in recently and they were selling a side table that was missing two legs, but still had it priced at $39.99. It just makes me so sad since this used to be my favorite thrift store in the area, and it's awful now.

They are also staffed by volunteers. If those aren't reasons to check out this store, the greatest advantage is how neatly everything is organized in racks by size. Some items are steamed for better presentation. They even have several racks of boutique clothing (that is, higher-end brands, like NYDJ, CAbi, Joe's Jeans, and Banana Republic), as well as purses, shoes, activewear, and a few housewares. If you like LuLaRoe, they have a rack of $1 items. Unlike many secondhand stores which have removed their fitting rooms, Amy's Closet has three small ones in the back of the store. Yay! Watch your step exiting, however, as the rooms are surrounded by metal frames, and I tripped a couple of times. Ha ha. I went on a Wednesday, and they were offering boutique items at 25% off, and buy-one-get-one-free for all non-boutique items. I'm not sure if these discounts are offered weekly, or if they are just trying to clear out some inventory. For example, a dressy Banana Republic (boutique) blouse and a pair of NYDJ jeans were priced at $13 each, and some CAbi jeans were $18. I found some non-boutique pants and jeans for $6 each, so their prices are great, if you can find something you like. They take ApplePay, too! Note they have moved a couple of miles north from their previous location (in the Brother's Bagels shopping center). I'd never visited the previous location, but this one is very nice, with plenty of parking. I'll definitely bring my nicer donations to the store, as well as shop for myself in the near future. It's a great find!

Those of us who have ever known or been affected by the homeless know that they live a hard life and that there is an invisible barrier between the homeless and the rest of society. That barrier is hard to breach because so many of the things that we take for granted or not available to those on the street. We want these folks to get a job and be self-sufficient, but in order to get a job we have to have an address and contact information and the ability to receive mail as well as legal documentation such as an ID and Social Security information. City with dwellings is a place that tries to bridge that gap. There are a lot of food kitchens and shelters but those do not always "teach a man how to fish." It always humbles me when people give and work for others so I signed up to volunteer on one of my days off during the holiday. Every time I volunteer I am surprised at how rewarding it is. CWD helps the community and volunteering is easy and painless so I recommend that everyone do it if possible.
