Yes, he played all of our "must play" songs. But, some really bad decisions. Mispronounced my last name (which is not hard). Was distracted during speeches and let an awkward silence ring out when they were over until someone had to go up and ask him to turn on the music again. He responded, "I thought you were toasting." Yes, but we're done! I explicitly requested classical or jazz music for cocktail hour, and he played schmaltzy Kenny G. When we asked if he could put some classical on, he said he didn't have any. Finally, he played the song "Last Resort" by Papa Roach. I'm sorry, but at a wedding??? The lyrics include, "Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort...suffocation, no breathing" etc. They did have a no-play list, but this is where we thought we had to say no to things like "YMCA," didn't occur to us that it would be not to play angry emo music. Hmmm. Finally, accepted money from an inebriated guest who wanted to "serenade" us on the microphone. TWICE. Funny now...not so much at the time. I wrote to Tom Barrett after the wedding with a comment card and full details of how we were dissatisfied. Never heard back. Would not suggest this company.

He not only played everything on our list, but did a great job of picking music in the same vein as our selections. I've received many compliments on the music selection. I also asked Ken to keep it pretty low key in terms of commentary and his approach was perfect for our event, an anniversary party with friends and family of all ages. He even downloaded some unusual late requests and played some music I brought that isn't available commercially. We set this up very last minute and while I had a small bit of trouble closing the loop with Tom, in fairness it was due to 12 days notice, just before Thanksgiving. The price was very reasonable and I would without hesitation recommend them (and especially Ken) again.

He kept the kids entertained and provided a space that was full of energy, excitement, and just down right fun. He provided us with an amazing set of dancers. They interacted with everyone, all ages of guests, and was able to make sure the dance floor was a comfortable place to bust a move and have the most fun. All initial communications went through Jane, the contracts were super easy to read (including all specifications for the venue and day-of the event), and the payments were easy to make. Once we were assigned our DJ, our communication for the actual day of the event all went through her. DJ Mareshah did a great job and was incredibly kind and easy to work with! We had an introduction call to make sure that we both felt it was a good fit (it was!) and she had a similar taste in music to my now husband. We used the Stylus DJ Entertainment planning spreadsheets and were able to lay out the music for the entire event. She talked us through what types of songs we should be thinking about for each part of the event and we were able to take that information and put together a great list. In terms of vendor coordination, she coordinated directly with our venue vendors and planners for the arrival the night of the event. DJ Mareshah was able to get all of the songs that we requested to have on hand and did an incredible job with the logistics, formalities, and announcements. (We had a few moments uncommonly found in wedding receptions - like a choir singing and an icebreaker game.) She was able to maneuver easily between different types of songs throughout the event and found the types of songs that the guests enjoyed the most and was able to home in on those at the end of the night. I am BIG BIG into music - a huge fan of 80-90s rock and an electric guitarist myself (aspiring :)) so when it came to finding an artist that truly could capture this love for music, my fiance and I were very very intentional. The People: We picked Stylus in part because it is SO AWESOME that it is run by women - and inclusive of all people. AND it is run by a bad ass artist named Jane who is a musical genius on top of being a kind soul. Her and her staff care deeply about their work and the art they make. Collaboration: Jane was so intentional in our planning process in incorporating our musical perspective and opinions as we built playlists on playlists together for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception - shifting between genres and vibes. Simultaneously, I will say however, we could just simply give her a vibe like Goo Goo Dolls and Hootie & the Blowfish and she could create a welcome playlist that seemed to read our minds - deeply resonating with me and the songs I cherished from my family and childhood without me even having to list them for her. I still listen to this playlist at work and on runs because it so resonated with me. Art Form: Jane did it ALL, spinning vinyl, MC'ing, and digital DJ'ing. She spun vinyl for our colorful vinyl cocktail hour bringing her own cherished vinyl records to the wedding. The vinyl cocktail hour was a deep tribute to 80s rock/pop. To find someone who cared more for 80s rock/pop than I did I didn't think was possible - until I met Jane. She curated a cocktail hour that had our guests reminiscing on their past shouting "I LOVE ZEPPELIN." She spun surrounded by my paintings, and it was just art surrounded by art. She also MC'd our wedding in the most graceful and loving fashion, seamlessly transitioning us between dances and toasts. She ended the night digital DJ'ing the dance portion of our reception incorporating both my and my fiance's wide range of tastes from Rufus Du Sol to Marc Anthony. As I said - Jane and her staff are musical geniuses and so well versed in all genres. I know this because I got to see Jane work and I got to see her colleague work at my sister's wedding too. I can not recommend this company enough. If you appreciate art and music is of the utmost importance to you - what you will find at Stylus is a community of musicians that mirror your passion and amplify it. My initial contact with The Telegram Girl was via email and within less than an hour I received a detailed response - I was very impressed with the response time and their willingness to handle all of my special requests. That same day we spoke on the phone and all details were finalized and contract completed - a very smooth transaction. My main need was to have one of the members of The Telegram Girl's team dress up as David Byrne and sing "Burning Down The House" - the guest of honor's favorite song. No problem at all! In total, I booked 4 singers from The Telegram Girl to sing at the party - Freddie Mercury (singing "Another Year Bites The Dust"), David Byrne (singing "Burning Down The House"), Dorothy (singing "Over The Rainbow"), and The Scarecrow (singing "If Only I Had A Brain"). At the party, The Telegram Girl team of singers arrived on time and the fun started. Everyone was so surprised! Each singer did a great job with not only their singing but also interacting with the guests and the guest of honor. I could not have been happier with their promptness, personalities, and professionalism - well worth every penny. Not only did she cancel all of the services, she called me angrily about it and HUNG UP on me when I tried to explain and see how we could move forward. I do not recommend working with her. From an event professional's standpoint, things change, and it's important to deal with vendors who can work with you and who won't call you in a rage and cancel services because of that. Her demeanor went from nice to completely rude and unprofessional in a matter of seconds. I'm honestly so shocked at how I was treated.

Modern Luxe was one of the best choices we made for our wedding --- they are incredibly talented…read moreand really brought the energy to our dance floor, and we've been told by countless guests that they loved our band. I stumbled across them during a YouTube deep-dive of local wedding bands and immediately told my now-husband I'd found the right band. We reached out in Sept 2021 and asked if there was any opportunity to see them live before we booked. They didn't have any upcoming live shows at the time but immediately invited us to stop by one of their rehearsals, where we were greeted warmly from the moment we arrived. They played a few songs by our request, though within 30 seconds we confirmed we were sold, and then were friendly enough to all sit and get to know us for a bit. They met with us again closer to our wedding date to confirm all of our song choices for the big moments, even enthusiastically agreeing to create a surprise mash-up of my dad's song choice and a childhood favorite of ours for our father-daughter dance. On our actual wedding day, they were flawless from beginning to end. Their instrumental version of "Helpless" from Hamilton for my walk down the aisle instantly triggered tears. Our first dance and dance songs were perfect. Our dance floor was packed all evening, including friends and family who don't typically gravitate toward the dance floor, and we had an absolute blast. MLX even surprised us by bringing one of their singers who'd actually left the group since we'd booked because they remembered we'd felt drawn to him (though their new singer, James, is awesome, too!). You can tell that MLX really loves what they do and were genuinely invested in making sure our wedding was perfect. We can only hope that one of our friends hires Modern Luxe for their own wedding someday. Until then, we will definitely be seeking them out at one of their public shows so we can relive our perfect night over and over.

For those who frequent the live local cover band nightlife scene like hubs and I had so much fun…read moredoing before kiddos, you may remember a band called Lima Bean Riot. They have somewhat recently reinvented themselves as "Modern Luxe" and play weddings now too! They still kick tush!!! We recently attended a wedding and these guys absolutely rocked it!! They played a fantastic mix of genres and combined them all so seamlessly. They had the crowd dancing and singing along from beginning to end. They covered all the classics you expect to hear at a wedding and some you would never think to, but thought were an awesome add-in. Each member of the band who came from a variety of different musical backgrounds offered something unique to the mix and together, they were absolute perfect and well-rounded. The band acknowledged the couple often and very well. They gave a warmth to the couple as if they weren't just another gig. They even learned the first dance song which the bride said she loved more than the original. The bride also said that she was going to go with a DJ, but once she saw Modern Luxe at a bar one night in Philly, she was sold. My small critique has nothing to do with the music so I'll keep with my 5 star rating they deserve based on performance. The tiny thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was the beautiful, personable lead singer's flip flops which she wound up changing into well into the night. I totally get it. Heels suck. There's no getting around it. Dancing and performing in them for hours blows. I've done it. I too was in the same industry for years and years and wore heels the entire night. I feel her pain, I really, really do. I just think it looked very unprofessional for a wedding, even a more casual summer barn wedding. There could've been a better, more appropriate shoe choice in my opinion. I'm not one for flip flops anywhere other than the beach or on the way to yoga. Certainly not with a dress and definitely not to your place of work or a wedding. A nice sandal if she wanted to keep with a summer open toe, a ballet flat or flat ankle bootie to go with the whole rocker chick thing. I mention this because I'm not the only one who noticed. The bride gave a lot of thought into every perfect elegant detail of her special night and I personally thought it was a tad disrespectful. I know this may sound harsh and silly, but I notice these things and apparently wasn't the only one. Small, tiny fixable flaw however. I've seen other photos of her performing and she looks amazing and dressed up, head to toe so I'm not sure what the deal was with this night.... I would absolutely hire these guys without thinking twice and I'm suuuuuuuper picky about bands. If you're in the market for a band for your wedding which I personally think is the way to go and makes a world of a difference, check these guys out! They still play the bar scene so seeing them live before booking or just for fun is easy. Check their Insta or FB for upcoming gigs!
