Visited Goody Shop Cafe for an early lunch on a Wednesday. When I stopped in, post COVID, I don't believe that dining in was an option so, obviously, I got my order to go. The inside feels like (or is?) part counter restaurant and part antiques store. I knew I had come for a hot dog and the folks behind the counter were patient while I decided on a side item, ultimately settling on onion rings. I hung out until they handed me a paper bag with my order. I had parked right out front so I didn't have far to go to enjoy my lunch. Everything (especially the onion rings) was really hot. The footlong was really good. The dog itself might have been fried and it was great to see pretty full coverage across the full dog. Onion rings were pretty greasy, as evidenced by the dark spot soaking through the paper bag. They were tasty though. I did go back in to ask for an extra couple ketchup packets. If I'm in the area, I'd return to Goody Shop cafe and try some of their other offerings. read more

Will not be back. called in an order of 3 hamburger patties with cheese and bacon, no bun, no lettuce, tomato, etc. Patties only. The person on the other end of the phone said no problem. I asked how much the order would be. She said $20 something. To which I reiterated that I was only ordering the patties. She replied that she had to charge me for 3 burgers. To which I replied that I would have to cancel the order as I cannot afford to spend over $20 on lunch when I can go to Wendys and get 3 patties for 7or 8 dollars. Then she said that I should just go to Wendys and get those patties and disconnected the call. I was expecting to spend more than what it would cost me at Wendys but not over 2x as much. Torn between 3 stars and 4 stars overall. Food = 3 Atmosphere = 5 Burger was good. Fries were ok. Onion rings had a nice flavor but were too greasy. Love that they have fountain Sun Drop. Staff was friendly and helpful. Atmosphere was perfect: located in a quaint town with a classic diner/soda fountain feel with excellent memorabilia. Stopped in for a much needed meal after a very wet camping trip to Falls Reservoir. Glad now to be getting dry!Wow, what a cool & tasty throw back to a long gone era... this place is 90 years old! It's quite narrow all the way to the back: super shot-gun style. The history here is evident and relics are spread everywhere. Clean? Sure. There are two narrow little bathrooms in the back that just have single seats - you share a sink. (The soap was empty and there was an old rusty paper towel holder that didn't want to share!). They describe the home made hamburgers as "pretty messy." Cool. IDK. I got a very good chicken salad club. I'd give 'em 5 stars if I could sit and eat here and try more of the menu. This is a lunch counter. Do not expect to sit facing your lunch buddies unless there are only two of you and you can snag one of the four two-tops. The Goody Burger is freaking huge. The patties are fresh and handmade. If you like a chili-slaw burger this is a good place to get one. Onion rings are yummy here, too. It can get slammed. Scott introduced me to this place when we came to Albemarle in July 2011. We got the goody burger with fries and a cherry-lemon Sundrop. I enjoyed this place. Whether it's a pancake as big as your head, or a burger with all the fixings the Goody Shop Cafe has top billing in my book! Be prepared though, it's a cash only kind of place! My husband & I enjoy breakfast and lunch dates here pretty regularly and love to sit at the counter. The waitstaff & cook are all great people and take care of us each time we go in! read more

The Goody Shop Cafe is one of the oldest, if not the very oldest continuously operating cafe in Albemarle opening in the 1920's. This looks like your typical lunch counter but with way above average food. The GOODY BURGER and GOODY CHEESEBURGER is unquestionably the best chili/mustard/slaw/onions/ALL THE WAY burger for miles around. You can order burgers with grilled onions for a few cents more and it is a good investment. As another reviewer pointed out the patties here are handmade from fresh beef and are so huge that they are basically a chopped hamburger steak on a bun. Even the regular hamburger patties are bigger than normal too. They aren't cheap but they sure are good. Another thing really amazing here is the Chicken Salad Club Sandwich in which the ham is replaced with fresh made in house chicken salad and this sandwich really is a treat I try to give myself a couple of times a month. The Chicken Salad Club here is the best sandwich in town in my opinion. They only have FOOT LONG hot dogs and they are good with home made chili and your choice of red or white slaw. The fries and onion rings are premium. All around this is a good spot for breakfast or lunch. Little known fact about the Goody Shop is that they will cook you a breakfast for lunch also. The breakfast menu includes a tasty western omelet which is always good. The grilled chicken plate is good too. So is the chicken tender plate. Chef salad a good choice too. This is a spot I eat at at least once per week. They do take out orders and frequently I get it to go, but they do not prepare take out on Saturdays for some reason. Cheerwine, Sundrop and other sodas in glass bottles are also available and they have really good sweet tea with a giant one-quart size available! Open Monday through Saturday about 6 AM, closes at 2 PM. Parking tight here in downtown so if you can't find a spot in front on the street, there are more spaces directly behind the building. read more

Food is terrific. Service is on a first name basis. It's 'old school' lunch counter. Chicken salad club on wheat - yum.

We had a salad and an omelette wth bacon and cheese. It was realy good. The people were so friendly. We will recommend this cafe to our friends in the Netherlands when they come over for a visit. read more

This is my kind of place! If I lived around Albemarle, this would be a frequent stop for me! Quaint, friendly, and food cooked just right!

Good food and great burgers. I love the hole in the wall diners, and this is a prime example. I remember going here when I was a kid. The restaurant is quite cramped, you may need to back into your seat. This is what I think makes this place so fun. I usually get lunch as a takeout, because there are usually no seats during lunch. read more
