I had the pleasure of staying her a few days while in Alaska on vacation at the Air Force TLF (Temporary Lodging Facilities) as a home base between stints in Seward and off base Hotels. I'm going to butcher a lot of the specifics because I'm not military. I was a dependent as a youth and this trip was planned for by my sister (Air Force) There is some redundancy on gates due to a combination of bases, but as we were still getting used to the 10:30pm summertime sunsets, most gates close early and without schedule/warning making entry slightly more difficult. There was an airshow when we arrived so the road closures and road blocks to keep public to certain areas of the base made a lot of back tracking. The main roads are well maintained, but parking lots are pretty much at the mercy of the extreme weather with some deep potholes. It's a pretty flat base and you can see planes take off in the distance from almost anywhere. The PX/BX is cool, reminds me of a Fred Meyer, but with a dedicated food court and some outside vendors. Commissary it's pretty basic. Gas is cheap probably due to the oil Alaska produces. The Burger King on base closes early even though we stocked the fridge at our housing. What I did make use of was the recreational facility. You can rent a hot tub there? Coolers, rain gear, bikes, fishing gear, archery gear for hunting, kind of whatever you need. It all was really cheap, if not free. I didn't explore too much because of the 100% security check and it's a big base and I didn't feel like biking around it too much. There was a bowling alley and a bar that's got limited schedule. It's a pretty cool base, but we had some issues with TLF and quality, but rec facility made up for it.

I love the yearly convention that is held here in Anchorage or Fairbanks. The annual event has initiatives with board member voting, dancing, educational booths, and my all time favorite are the beautiful ethnic products made by different tribes from around Alaska and the lower 48. I have not been to the Fairbanks AFN yet, so maybe next year will be my first time. At the end of my shopping spree I like to go to the vendors outside the convention center and get smoked and dried salmon. To me it's like candy. Thrifty people will buy material goods on the last day because that's the sale day and sellers don't feel like hauling the goods back home, but this is a gamble because they could be missing out on one of a kind items like a sea otter fur blanket. Street parking was easy. Last but certainly not least: LOOK at their amazing "I voted" stickers. They are works of art! They made me wish voting 8 times wasn't illegal, so I could, y'know, collect 'em all...like Pokemon.

I'm still old school and love to peruse the books and prefer reading an actual book rather than on a device. Most recently I went in for a specific book, which I had checked online and it showed available. You can of course use the computers there to find your book or find it just as easily with your device. A brief lookup on my phone and I found it quickly!' Books, audio books, magazines, movies and a plethora of digital items to check out online as well. There is plenty of space, tables and even private rooms for study. The staff is polite and helpful to boot! One thing to make note of is you need to contact them first about donating items. They don't just take things on a whim, and definitely not a place to just dump your boom supply.

We love the Wasilla Public Library! I have spent most of my time in the children's section with my…read morelittle one so my review will be skewed that way but I hope to enjoy the rest of the library in the future! They offer a variety of story times catered to each age range. Story time includes poems, songs, dancing, books and they are always finished off with a craft that sticks with the theme of story time. Such a fun offering! The book selection is wonderful and they also have puzzles and a few stuffed toys for children to enjoy. They also offer computers with age appropriate games. The staff is very helpful if there is something specific you are looking for. One of my favorite features is that if the Wasilla library does not have a book you are looking for at their location you can place a hold on a copy throughout Alaska's public libraries and they will ship it to the Wasilla location for you to pick up! I can't wait to continue to explore what else the library has to offer!
