This post office is exclusively for people with access to base and not going to lie, if you've never been here you wouldn't know where to find the post office because there are no signs. It is tucked away on the first floor of one of the buildings. The clerks at this post office are always so kind and cordial and they do not hassle you like in other post offices in town. The post office itself is nice and neat and they are always stocked with a variety of flat rate boxes, even ones that you can't find in the regular post offices. These guys really set the bar for customer service and there is hardly ever a line. What else sets this post office apart from the rest? They always have a nice welcoming bowl of dum dums lollipops. On your way out there's nothing like eating your favorite dum dum and if you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of jets taking off.

Eagle River has a few festivals throughout the year that are worth seeing. Bear Paw Festival is Eagle River's yearly fair held in July. It consists of a parade, fair type booths and many activities for the whole family. Each year the Bear Paw has a different theme. Last year it was Pirates, this year it is a Circus theme. Some of the events include a slippery salmon toss, outhouse races and a salmon cook-off. Eagle River Scottish Highland Games is held at the Lion's park every June. If you like the sound of bagpipes and watching large men throwing even larger objects about, this event is for you.

They have a dance studio and a kids funhouse( rump around) beside them so all u r gonna hear is bad circus piano music and kids screaming till their lungs collapses . The heat is turned to one level so u r gonna freeze. The parking on religious service day is jammed so finding a spot ,let alone finding a safe passage through ,is the norm. They offer breakfast on Sat. morn and occasionally bring eatables after their Friday services. All though most constituents of the place r professional taxi drivers don't bother asking for a ride. It's not free. They pray a schedule simulated to the Mecca prayer schedule and feature pockets of attendees who pray upon the local alaskan time. The community are indiscriminate to who comes even to the point of allowing non-Muslims in for Islamic propaganda .

This is a small museum collocated in the Administration Building and in front of the fire station…read more It does not have a designated parking area, but there is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance. The museum is locked, but all you have to do is press the button at the door during normal business hours and someone will come down and let you in. The museum has old memorabilia such as ladders, water bombs, toys, helmets, radios pictures and decorative hydrants. They also have an old pole that was removed from one of their fire houses. It is not operational, but still cool to see. The woman working there during my visit was very nice and helpful. She answered any question that I had. It is free to visit and for me, it broke up visiting the same old stuff. There is merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, and patches that you can purchase there. There is no apparatus on display, but I was told that if they were not bust that I may be able to see the apparatus in the real firehouse behind the museum. This is not a big time consumer, but is neat to see and could be coupled with visits to the firefighters memorial, the Alaska Law Enforcement Museum, and other nearby attractions

This statue of Balto is the official start of the annual Iditarod dog sled race. Across the street…read moreis a list of all the winners throughout the years. The race, as I've learned, is a memorial to the original run of dogs back in 1925. They were bringing a shipment of diptheria medication from Anchorage to Nome. The big brass dog looks pretty tough! There's such a look of concentration in his eyes as he's running for the finish line.

"Balto, The Wonder Dog" was my son's absolutely favorite book when he was a kid. We read that darn…read morebook EVERY NIGHT before bed. I know that story by heart so imagine my surprise to be riding my rental bike along 4th Ave. last week and coming upon The Balto Memorial in downtown Anchorage! This statue of the legendary lead dog Balto also marks the "official" starting point of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race every March. Balto was a very brave dog and a big hero who lived from 1919 - March 14, 1933. He was a Siberian Husky sled dog who led his team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome, in which diphtheria antitoxin was transported from Anchorage, Alaska, to Nenana, Alaska, by train and then to Nome by dog sled to combat an outbreak of the disease. Balto's heroics saved the lives of many sick people, many of them children. The "Serum Run" is now commemorated by the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.. The Memorial is very nice and shows a very sturdy-looking Balto in full stride. Someone downtown told me it is a mad house there every March when they start the Iditarod race right there on the main drag. I guess the race has sold out & become a media stunt now but the statue of Balto is still 5 YELP STARS!

It is located right next to Fire Station 1. This memorial, which was dedicated in 201, honors the State's first responders that have made the ultimate sacrifice. It features a bronze statue of a firefighter in turnout gear, hold a hose and ready to fight a fire. The statue is very detailed, you can actually see the icecicles hanging from the firefighter's helmet. They look so real. The statue has a cement pedestal in front of it with a bronze plaque with the Firefighters Prayer on it. There are 6 walls low brick walls that are surrounding the statue. Two walls are joined together at the center and has an EMS and firefighters cross above them along with a bell. The walls have bronze plaques on the with the name of each State hero engraved on them. There are a lot of blank space and hopefully, it will stay that way. The plaza that the memorial sits is well maintained and in excellent shape. It was constructed completely with private donations and funds. The ground is made of brick pavers and has some lights counter sunk into it to provide nighttime illumination. This is a fitting tribute to those everyday heroes. This is not a big time consumer, but is neat to see and could be coupled with visits to the Anchorage Firefighters Museum, the Alaska Law Enforcement Museum, and other nearby attractions.
