A garden centre? what in all that is unholy was I doing in a garden centre???? Normally if someone…read morewas to say "Lee lets pop to the garden centre",then my answer would be "Can I stay at home and whip myself accross the face with a rusty bike chain instead?". But on this occasion that wasn't an option,it was Mrs Zombis birthday and she wanted to buy some plants. So off we went (I packed a chain just in case). Now as far as i'm concerned the worst thing we have ever done as a couple is buy a house with a garden. I just can never rouse myself to do anything in it,if money were no object then it would either be paved over or a gardener would be hired. So the walking along rows of flowers and plants made me long for rusty metal flagellation (good name for a metal band). This is not to do the garden centre down at all,it is how i feel about all of them. On this occasion though my mind was blown apart, when we got inside the centre they had a Deli!!! Yep,a Deli!!! Cheeses of the world, beautiful cooked meats, salamis and other sausages, beautiful artisan breads and stuffed olives of many a filling. That is only a small selection, they also stocked some really nice kitchen gadgets, smelly candles and stuff that i have never seen or heard of before... I bought some Pastrami ( the king of American Deli meats). And i have to honestly say that it was some of the nicest i have ever had. Really peppery and beefy. I haven't enjoyed pastrami so much since i had a stupidly big sandwich in Sausalito, but i can't just pop there whenever i fancy a peppery beef sarnie. But I can pop a mile and a half down the road to the All in one garden centre for one,and that'll do for me ta very much.....

I have driven past The Vale Stables and their signs indicating logs and manure for sale many times…read morethinking it was just a horse stables. It may well be this but when I walked past I was overjoyed to find a little garden centre that looks like it rose up from ground and grew out of the trees that hide it. It exists mostly outside with a lady, a cat and dog huddled round a wood burner, running the place. There are plants everywhere, planted in boots, old toilets, amongst carved pieces of wood, as well as in pots, for sale. Recently I picked up a pot of thyme for £1.50 but there were loads of herbs and flowers I could have chosen from. I also wanted some trays and pots to plant my seeds in so I asked if they had any. The lady told me they had loads and to help myself from the pile for no charge! This beats sterile and expensive landscaped garden centres I have tried to avoid since my childhood any day.

The Vale Stables is truly a hidden gem…read more A lovely rambling space packed with seasonal plants of all kinds, where the owners can be found warming their hands on a crackling wood-burner in all weathers - inspiring you to the outdoor life. They sell beautiful healthy plants which are so much cheaper than at any local garden centre. You can also buy wood and good quality manure in the autumn. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The owner, Gwen, and her daughter, have a wealth of gardening knowledge and will go out of their way to help and advise. My 3 year old boy loves to visit and see the hens, the dog and the river while I browse the plants on offer and soak up the atmosphere.

Unfortunately my voyeuristic interest in pets of the slimy and scaly variety is all too often spoilt by a shop that keeps its animals in cramped or unhygienic conditions (yes, I know it's not a zoo, but still...). Happily, I encountered no such problems at Tyrannosaurus Pets, an 'exotic' pet store that stocks lizards, snake and amphibians. Quite aside from having one of the best pet shop names ever, this shop is a credit to its trade with a shiny, modern shop floor; helpful, knowledgeable staff and - most importantly - spacious, clean vivariums filled with content animals. When I visited I was quite open about the fact I'd just come for a gawp, but the staff treated me as if I was a paying customer, and told me lots of stuff about the logistics of keeping lizards and snakes that I'd never heard before, despite pet shop loitering being something of a habit of mine. If you're thinking of buying an unusual pet or already own one and need to stock up on accessories, this is the only place you should need to go in Leeds.
