He's extremely knowledgeable and told stories about the items in his store and where they have come from, all around the world. As a religious college professor and missionary, Keith and his wife, Ann, have had the opportunity to explore the world and share these pieces in their store. Upon first glance it appears that there is just one level BUT there is a basement and an upstairs to this store as well! You will find a ton of unique and one-of-a-kind antiques, collectibles, treasures, furniture, pieces, jewelry, rugs, pottery, art and vintage items from all over the globe. There are also paintings, pottery, and books available for purchase by the owners and their family. Additionally, there are many, many Icons that can be purchased here. Found is one of the only stores in the Midwest were you can purchase from a HUGE collection of Eastern Orthodox, Ethiopian, & Anabaptist Icons. They gossip amongst themselves constantly, including very rude comments about customers, seconds after they've walked out the door. I have overheard conversations about who is hooking up with whom, and graphic observations about people's personal hygiene. I can't imagine allowing such a culture in my own business. A multilevel building with completely separate stores that allows a person to go from store to store without ever leaving the building? Complete with a directory of where the stores are within the building? And a place to eat while shopping? Well, friends, that's Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana. There are about twenty stores on four levels. They're really random stores, too. Like those random stores at real malls, the non-chain ones that seemed to hang on despite the fact that they didn't get as much business. They cater mostly to tourists, but places like Lolly's Fabrics probably also probably do much better with the locals here than they would in almost any other part of the country--except maybe for Utah. I've been here four times and am always both excited to come and slightly disappointed when I've spent some time here. I really want it to be a mall, even though that would ruin in. I reminds me a lot of my childhood and the randomness of the three malls in Carmel, California, before rents got so high that regular places like stationery stores and ice-cream shops and stores that sold mostly flowerpots and gardening equipment could no longer afford to exist there. Davis Mercantile is nothing like any of those three malls, really, but they're connected in my mind. I want in-person shopping to be as fun and random and normal as it used to be.
