Choripan

Rustic, real, homey and hidden, Gotan is a true find. This petite Argentine eatery is everything you'd hope for on nights when you're looking for a casual dinner out and happen to have a hankering for meat treats. We started with the meat empanadas and paired with the homemade sauces, I gobbled mine up rather speedily and particularly liked their chimichurri-like spread. Next up, I ordered off the menu with the choripan. A popular Argentine sandwich, you'll find sliced chorizo with the chimichurri sauce between the buns of a soft and crunchy baguette. This was absolutely heaven. While I don't know if it's always available, you can certainly try your luck. To wash down the fantastic meal, we ordered a bottle of Argentinean Malbec; a solid choice for a solid meal. My dinner dates ate a grilled chicken breast with salad and a steak. A fun fact about Gotan is the owner, Vivi, meticulously washes each vegetable to ensure cleanliness. They also get their veggies shipped in from California and opt for organic varieties. The dessert that followed was a homemade cheesecake like lemon tart and a homemade alfajor. Decadent, perfectly prepared and quickly devoured. As for the service, Vivi is a supreme owner/hostess. The service was attentive and fast and Vivi personally came by to see how we were enjoying our meal. Gotan is the kind of place that makes you feel like family... with a kitchen churning out the kinds of hearty specialties you'd only hope for at your own family gathering.

I selected this restaurant as a surprise for my novia on Valentine's Day. I was in Mexico City for customer meetings and researched dozens of beautiful restaurants, each a legend in their own way, but something drew me to Gotan. I initially contacted them by e-mail and outlined my plan for the special surprise evening. Nothing can prepare you for the sensations which await you at Gotan. The customized menu created by the owners for our special evening was simply magnificent. Many more capable writers can describe the olfactory and gustatory sensations. I will only say that the combination of appetizers, salad, food, wine, and of course dessert rank in my top 10 dining experiences of all time (including Windows on the World (1999), Aubergine, Gary Denko, Spago and French Laundry).

One of the best places to eat in Mexico City!! The food was amazing!! You gotta try the raviolis and that pie-ish desert (cheesecake pie with a lemony twist). Vivi (the owner along with her husband ) is so nice and she treated us so great! You can't leave Mexico City without eating here!

The service was good, cozy ambiance and food was great. Guillermo, our waiter made the difference. His suggestions we're good and not too much. The meat came a little undercooked but was promptly fixed with no problem.

Really good steak! Got medium rare ribs and it was juicy and well seasoned! The apples on the side add a good sweetness to the dish. Ribs for two was around $40. Super affordable!

Amazing meal. Don't pass it up.

It was within easy walking distance of our hotel…read moreand offered a calm, understated dining experience that contrasted nicely with some of the more energetic restaurants in the city. We ordered the one-kilogram ribeye, which was cooked extremely well and more than enough food to comfortably share among four people. The Caesar salad was prepared tableside and was excellent. For dessert, we had the strawberry flambé, also prepared at the table, which was very well done and a fun finish to the meal. Service was a strong point. Our waiter was attentive, professional, and paced the meal appropriately. We went on a Monday evening, so the restaurant was relatively quiet, which added to the relaxed atmosphere. The only drawback was that they did not have their traditional Argentine roasted beef ribs available that night. If I were to return, I would aim for an earlier seating or a weekend visit to increase the likelihood of getting the ribs, which appear to be one of their signature offerings. Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience. The food was excellent, the service strong, and the setting more quiet, rustic, and subdued compared with places like La Buena Brra. Our teenage kids enjoyed both experiences, despite how different they were. Highly recommended if you are looking for a solid Argentine steakhouse experience while in Mexico City.

The ambiance is nice and authentic looking, and some of the reviews are positive, but definitely avoid this place. I ordered the lechon and it came raw. I gave it back to them and instead of bringing me new food, they took the same piece of meat to the grill to continue cooking it. When they brought back the same piece of meat, it was overcooked and dry. So not only did they serve raw food, but they handled the subsequent situation terribly. They didn't even offer to remove the lechón from the bill, nor to offer a discount. My girlfriend's Milanesa was gross and rubbery. I am from Argentina and can tell you that this place is nothing like Argentine asado.

Nevertheless, I ate everything on my plate. Also, we ordered meat empanada and corn empanada---both are delicious. Prices are a little steep $40 USD for 2. Temperature of the food could have been warmer/hotter. Nothing came out piping hot. My favorite was actually the chimichurri made with spinach, cilantro, oregano, garlic etc. The salsa was too "pica" for me. Sesame sticks (served with bread) have that awesome 'crunch' I like so much. I poured the chimichurri on the grilled octopus ---that hit the spot! Also, those who are checking in on Yelp! should beware that this restaurant will NOT honor the Yelp 15% discount. We showed the waiter and the manager the yelp offer. Both are unaware of the offer. EVEN if you show them the yelp offer, they refuse to honor any discount!!!! We tried to argue with them. The manager first told us he would honor the offer, then 5 minutes later he came back to our table to tell us that he would not honor it after we had already ordered. The restaurant isn't very accommodating. I appreciated the quietness of the ambiance. I got tired of going to other restaurants where it was so loud with a dozen kids screaming and running around along with loud music. They don't speak much English. So it helps to speak Spanish or have someone with you who is fluent. The menus are 100% Spanish as they don't offer an English version. Come if you want a quiet place, don't mind spending a bit more, and don't mind paying full price. The food quality is very good and fresh. grilled meats are their signature items.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hostess and shown to our table. They have minimal English-speaking staff, but we didn't have any issues communicating. There is also patio seating as well.   Menu was split into different categories from appetizers, salads, steaks, pizza, pasta, and seafood. We were surprised at how big the portion was, plenty to share. We ordered a few items:   - NY dry aged carpaccio: This was a massive portion. Cut perfectly into thin slices. A great choice for an appetizer. - Brisket tacos (3): Comes with 3 medium size tacos. Meat was tendered. Two different sauces and with your usual toppings. - Ribeye tacos (3): Same with this, comes with 3 tacos. My favorite out of the two tacos. - Octopus on the grill: My favorite out of everything we tried. I love getting octopus when in Mexico. It was fresh and grilled perfectly. It also came with fried potatoes which we all love. - Peasant salad: A good balance to the rest of the meal. A refreshing salad with sweet tomatoes. - Grilled cod fillet: The cod fillet was just the right texture. The sweet potatoes puree gave it a nice balance.   The service was amazing. The staff helped pour our water and helped with plating our food. I really appreciate their attentiveness. Overall, this was a great experience and would highly recommend anyone to stop by for lunch/dinner if they're in the Roma Norte area.

I conducted my search, finding a few places online trying to locate a good spot in a city I've never visited. They truly created and planned the perfect event for the group and I truly could not be more grateful. Onto the food (their honest reviews)! They said it was a 11/10 dining experience overall. The food was incredible and amazing and these are some food critics traveling from major foodie cities. They planned a beautiful menu with Chicken Tortilla Soup, a variety of Empanadas, Picaña Steak and Skirt Steak, and Peasant Salad and Fries as sides. They said the soup was super delicious and flavorful. They said the steak was absolutely phenomenal and tender, it was very high quality meat. Also the salad really stood out as it was super fresh and crisp. Then they plated a beautiful dessert assortment as well as well as special happy birthday and bachelor messages to make the celebration extra special. The cocktails were also super delicious as well. They left the meal with their hearts and bellies very full. From everything, from the planning, to the the presentation of food, the service, and food quality, the team at Gardela went above and beyond. I really could not have picked a better place and now I am jealous because I need to go try some of the steaks because they had my mouth watering! Overall, I would highly recommend going to this restaurant. They said they were seated in a private room too so it made the experience even more special. My sincerest thank you to the entire team at Gardela for making this event unforgettable!

We did not have steaks this time around -- we weren't that hungry. Instead, we split some empanadas, fries, and a salad. The empanadas were chistorra and cheese, ground beef, and spinach and corn. They were all excellent -- hot, flaky, and flavorful. The fries were also good and crisp, and my wife loved the simple mixed greens salad. We also had some good, inexpensive wine. Everything was served cheerfully by the friendly staff. You can see the grill from the dining room, and all the other diners seemed to really enjoy their steaks. They did look delicious! Cambalache is an Argentine steakhouse, which is reflected in the style of grilling their meats (over an open flame, which can be viewed at the back of the restaurant), and the service of the meat itself (a La plancha, at the table). We chose the ribeye (600-700g) to share. It was perfectly cooked to medium temperature, and sliced for us tableside. A beautiful cut of meat, and very flavorful. The side dishes were tasty, too (the soufflé potatoes are a signature, and they're fun to try/share). Speaking of tableside prep, I highly recommend saving room for the strawberries Romanoff - our server spent about 20 minutes whipping a combination of vanilla Haagen Dazs, Grand Marnier, cream, and fresh-sliced strawberries into a fluffy concoction that was divinely yummy. Our youngest diner insisted on coming back to Cambalache a second time, a week later, just to have it again. It's not on the regular postre menu, so be sure to ask your server about it.
