Anytime I see gourmet burger I think of the Red Robin rebranding in America; however, the taste of these burgers are so far from that at any gourmet burger chain in America. The establishment I visited near St. Paul's cathedral was packed around 5:00 PM on a Thursday, and for good reason. The sign, decor, and casual atmosphere gave me an unassuming impression which ultimately left more than enough room for a pleasant surprise. When walking in we were immediately seated and given a menu. We then decided on our dishes and walked to the counter to order. Around, 15 minutes later, we both had our burgers and fries in front of us ready to be devoured. I ordered a veggie burger and fries with sriracha sauce. The fries were crispy and thin with a little kick from the sriracha sauce. The burger was also prepared well with some nice umami flavors which were quickly cut by the vinegar of the pickles. The whole experience was an explosion of contrasting flavors which took my taste buds on a delicious journey. The price point was fairly high. Ultimately, I ended up spending around 25 dollars for my meal which included an alcoholic beverage, a burger, and fries. However, it was ultimately worth the experience and I wouldn't hesitate to go again. Overall, I really appreciated the food and atmosphere at the gourmet burger kitchen. Verdict: Bravo on a brilliant burger, London and a fine fizzy to boot. I was staying just down the street and found this place on Yelp. Glad I did because this was a quality burger. The free popcorn was an unexpected bonus and the perfect appetizer, without being overly filling. Plenty of food was on the way. Got the Hunger Conqueror with beef, cooked medium, and some fries. The meal came with a drink and I was feeling adventurous. Picked the elderberry and strawberry fizzy because I can get something like a soda anywhere. The burger was excellent and just right at medium. Nothing had at all to say about the fries and the portion size was spot on too. My fizzy lifting drink (name that book/film) was a nice departure from the common beverages. The fresh mint leaves paired well with the berries for something light and fresh on the pallet. Would certainly go back. We even talked about it but never got the chance. Lots of places to try in a city this size but this meal was one of my top picks during our stay. read more

This my second Gourmet Burger Kitchen, having gone to in the UK. The other one was in Cardiff Quay. I have to say both had really friendly and helpful staff. While waiting for the CC machine to connect and charge me the checkout people made very interesting chit chat with me. The food is also excellent. I have been to many branches of GBK and this one is a bit larger in venue size compared to many others around London. It's in a nice location being across St Pauls Cathedral and One New Change Shopping Centre heading towards Strand, quite quiet but enough people around to keep you company. I particularly liked the little back-to-back leather sitting area on the right of the restaurant for more privacy and intimacy. Clean, bright wooden decor- there is nothing I could fault about decor or maintenance. Sadly on this occasion their Paypal app wasn't working nor was there their GBK app reception which caused things to be delayed. Their customer service wasn't great either, no reassurance given or feedback towards the problem. No one really stood up to take responsibility and instead the problem was continuously being thrown back at each other creating a longer queue behind us. They seemed just as confused as us. After we offered to pay by card instead things resolved itself from there. I suppose this is what you get from a large chain where no one really knows what to do with a problem like this and scared to make a decision. Between the two of us we got the Smokin' Joe and the Wellington. Like most GBK I do find the patty itself under seasoned and not as high quality and meaty as the independent joints. It really relies on the fillings and sauces to give it's boost of flavour and the reason why I still return The Smokin Joe came in a brioche bun with cheddar cheese, dill pickle. crispy shallots, malt vinegar aioli and tomato, relish. Where the pickle and and vinegar gave that salty appetising kick, the rest of the ingredients did the burger a favour by adding it some flavour and texture. The brioche bun could have been lighter but did a good job at holding the burger altogether. I can complete by saying it was an 'good' burger. Still I felt it was lacking in flavour, probably the patty again but have had more satisfying varieties of burger at GBK where it included more varied and flavoursome toppings. The Wellington burger was quite a shock in taste as we didn't expect the horseradish to overpower the whole burger. As mushroom are quite delicate in flavour the addition of the grill mushroom felt a bit pointless but I got to appreciate it's texture instead. The bun was also a sesame bun although I think it actually needed a sweeter brioche bun to balance out the heat. I must say I wasn't a particular fan of this burger but for a horseradish lover they might have an different opinion. Having a simpler burger goes to show that GBK don't really offer the best simple bun and patty bun. But find your favourite topping combination things can go along way. My favourite will always remain The Taxidriver with the extra crunch from the onion rings but as I didn't have it at this branch I won't review it. I also feel their sides and drinks exceeds their burgers sometimes. On this occasion we ordered a side of sweet potatoes fries and were so amazingly crisp yet grease less as expected, The flesh inside was soften and sweet that you don't really a dip to enjoy these. For peanut butter lovers I highly recommend the peanut butter shake. It was incredible, creamy, milky, perfect on the sweetness with nice crunchy pieces of peanuts to chew on. They didn't do the best at mixing it as I was left with dollops of peanut butter at the bottom which I tried my best to scoop up using a fork. With the loyalty app and offers available using Tastecard it makes the pricing of each burger quite reasonable to return to GBK as I also understand there are a lot of more better independent burger restaurants out there but may not be so generous with portion size. I probably won't recommend this particular GBK unless you like big venues. It did lack atmosphere and the staff seem quite aloof and uncaring. Still I'm sure I will return to another branch for another Taxidriver. read more

Awesome burgers! Probably somewhat near the best burgers I've ever had. Went to the kitchen near St. Pauls where service was great facilities nice and food both warm, delicious and well-served. We had the spiciest hottest versions you could order on the menu, incl. side orders of the bluecheese salad, chunky fries etc. with beers we paid some 35-40 £ for 2 persons. Not the cheapest place in town, but definitely fast and good. We actually came back a 2nd time and even considered a 3rd visit at our 5 day London trip. read more

So many options for burgers from the lunch menu I had the Classic beef burger with the simple green salad, burger was very good nice & juicy good tasting meat the salad was good as well could use more dressing on it. My friend had the Chicken sandwich w skinny fries also from the lunch menu, good sandwich fries were very good great with the garlic mayo. also had some GBK homeslaw this was good I liked that it's not prepared with mayo. Other burgers where the Major Tom & GBK cheese & bacon both burgers where good as well cooked well with fries. Also tried an Oreo milkshake this was good. As for the restaurant nice size, good set up interesting how u pay & them they bring u the food good system seems to work well. Service was good & prices are reasonable. read more

Great burger chain; good prices; wonderful staff. Probably my go-to burger when in London.

I'd heard a lot of good things about this chain so was looking forward to a really good burger here. Sadly, I was disappointed: the whole experience was mediocre. The surroundings are rather soulless, and really weren't helped by the appalling sound: too quiet for the melody to be audible, but with the bass unpleasantly to the fore. Rather bizarrely, you are shown to a table but then told 'this is table number x, order at the counter' (there don't seem to be numbers at the table, so it's a sort of memory test). After ordering, though, you are served your food and can order further drinks at the table. Food was mediocre. The burger was ridiculously tall, not because it was full of good fillings but because it had a load of folded lettuce making it unnecessarily high. Once that was disposed of and the thing was a more manageable shape, I was left to wonder (1) why hadn't I been asked how I wanted it cooked? (2) It looked medium - still a little pink in the middle - so how was the meat so dry? (3) Given it had satay sauce, why had they also put a runny and tasteless mayonnaise on it? (4) Why were so many of the chips overcooked and crispy? (A shame, because the other chips were delicious). (5) Why, when I left half my coleslaw, did the waitress not even bother to check if there was a problem? (There was - their version of coleslaw has an oily dressing, in such quantities that the bottom third of the bowl was a pool of oil). All in all, rather a disappointment. Prices are very high - burger, chips, coleslaw and lemonade came to over £14 - and neither the food quality nor the overall experience justified them. read more

London calling (again) and after 12 hours travelling from the real north (Scotland) I was in desperate need of food, and fast. After wandering along the street a little, my friends and I wandered in here at 22:20 - literally just in time to order before the kitchen closed. At £16 for a burger, fries and a soft drink in the middle of a heavily touristy area the price was pretty fair I felt. I had the chargrilled chicken burger with cranberry (holding the Camembert) and sweet potato fries. The chicken was beautiful but the bread roll lets it down a little, get some nicer quality buns in! Long story short - yeah the food was alright and the price was okay, but it's London! This was nice burger spot and I think it tasted way better than Byrons burger. The burger was juicy and fresh and cooked to perfection which the perfect blend of mayo, chipotle ketchup lettuce and tomatoes. They cloudy lemonade is freshly made and so addicting. OK before I give my review I have to say this is solely based on it being a tourist trap and the place being packed due to lunchtime promotion Any way due to the promotion myself and a team of colleagues went to GBK for lunch (thankfully we booked in advance). It was complete madness - this was a Wednesday and you honestly could not move. GBK was very busy, over crowded in fact and very very noisy. It took 15 minutes to get to the front of the queue (you queue to order after being seated) and another 10 minutes for the food to arrive (which was a miracle considering how busy it was). I asked for a nude burger due to my tomato allergy - it was noted but arrived with the full salad. I asked them to take it back and amend it. They brought it back almost instantly having swiped the salad off. Annoyingly it came back with a trace of the now remove tomato on the bun - the waiter didn't seem to understand my health concern when I insisted they bring me a fresh burger in a new bun. Eventually they got my order right. The food was served fast but I didn't think it was very hot and looking at the 7 different orders on the table I could barely see any difference in any of them. Gourmet burgers have been big business of late and GBK are late to the party - they certainly are by no means the best - the warm burger was comparable to something you get in McDonalds - possibly with a touch more meat (which made it chewy). I was recommended to have a strawberry shake and although it was a full cup it was ice cold and tasted of nothing - especially not strawberry. I was very disappointed, event with the 50% discount for two meals. It did just seem like a very expensive and noisy McDonlads. I'd recommend you stay clear of GBK and look for Ed's or Hamburger Union (one of the first gourmet burger kitchens and best in terms of price, flavour and service) read more

I walked in super excited for a burger and was met with awful service: no one welcomed us, invited us to sit, gave us menus, made eye contact, etc. After sitting for 15 mins we flagged down a waitress and were told to order ourselves at the counter. Not a problem at all, but useful to know since it wasn't obvious at all and we hadn't been there before. Got to the counter to order and despite standing 3 feet away from the cashier and obviously waiting, she didn't beckon us over or thank us for waiting. When we finally approached after a few moments she sharply told us to wait. So we just left and went down the street to Strada instead and they had an awesome burger and wonderful service. read more

Food was ver good. However, the prices were extortionate. Be careful what you order as everything has a price. Was asked if I wanted a dip with my chips and it wasn't till I received the bill that I realised it cost £1.50. Very very busy the first day I tried to go the queue was out of the door. I would recommend getting there no later than just gone 12 (if not booking a table) and going during the lunch period. Service was quick, although the fact that you are allocated a table number when seated and then responsible for placing your own order at a designated counter does make it feel more like a pub than a restaurant. The staff was really nice. I'm not a fan of burgers but this was so tasty I couldn't stop eating even though I was full. To me the best burgers in London are WeatherSpoons and Harvester. GBK is good but a bit too pricy. I enjoy the milkshakes at the place and there are a log of 2 for 1 meals since the recession kicked in. For an upmarket burger joint it does the job. You have to go up and place your order then sit down which is a bit strange for a restaurant branding themselves as Gourmet, but at least they deliver you food and you're not standing there like in a traditional fast food joint. read more
