I went to this church for many, many years. It has become a breeding ground for hate and…read moreintolerance in a way that is extremely un-Christlike. I am blown away by what I've seen from its members in the last decade or so. This year alone, I have been mercilessly harassed by MULTIPLE (4) members of this congregation. I am a public middle school teacher who gave my students book trailers for 65 books in our (board-approved) school library. Because 4 of those books had queer characters, rather than addressing concerns to the actual school board that had approved the books, or talking to me personally, 4 members of this church went INSANE in spreading hate and harassment about me online. The posts and comments made by members of this church were chilling. A friend in the community is the one who finally realized that Grace Church was the common denominator in all of the hate-filled rhetoric. Obviously, there are different interpretations of the Bible -- there are mainline denominations and more conservative ones like Grace, that teach a literal interpretation of certain Bible passages. That's not the issue... the issue is that this seems to have become a breeding ground for contempt in a way that is antithetical to the gospel. I had some great memories of this place as a kid at church camp, but as an adult, I found the teachings to increasingly focus on creating an extreme Us/Them dichotomy that enflames people already leaning towards racism, homophobia, and othering on their own. It has broken my heart to watch this and to experience it firsthand.

Religion and politics can never be separated. We must fight to preserve our culture and traditions in the face of them being threatened with extermination. It is churches like Grace that will fight for and protect our rights as Christian American citizens. This church has a backbone. The courage is admirable and I'm extremely proud to be a part of this congregation. I finally feel like there is a Godly community where we can band together to fight for what is right and Holy during this spiritual warfare. God bless this church. I've been here once and I really want to go back…read more The sermon when I went focused on kindness to strangers and "sheltering" others; the minister shared an amusing story about when he was a teenager roadtripping in Texas and his car broke down and he was lost, and a woman that took him in. Obviously he doesn't expect people to let complete strangers sleep in their house, but the anecdote was meant to segue into a moving sermon about kindness to others. I really enjoyed the minister's style of speech, sense of humor, and his message. I appreciate that the focus of this church's mindset are being a good, spiritual person, rather than following doctrine. There was music (from talented congregation members), there was laughing, there was calmness and meditation. Before every service they have the children come in and share something with us, and I love how they integrate the children with the adults and bridged that generational gap. The children were apparently learning about a new religion every week, and shared with us their Buddhist prayer flags, which I thought was really awesome. That's something that I remember yearning for as a child - I wanted to learn about everything there was out there in the world spiritually so I could make my own choices, and I love that this church fosters that. I noticed they were also very involved in the community and followed through on their commitment to social justice, with events scheduled like a "Homeless for a Night" fundraiser event (you know, where you sleep outside in a box, and bring canned food, and raise awareness). The chapel itself is simple, but very beautiful. Unpretentious. Really nice space. Everyone was very kind and welcoming to me, but not pushy like the previous reviewer said, and I appreciated that. Also the day I went they had a used book fair - special was all you can fit in a Dierberg's bag for $5! They had a huge selection and I walked away with some really awesome steals. Plus, it's in cute little downtown Kirkwood, so you've got their farmer's market right across the street and all their local businesses to explore while you're in the area as well. Technically First Unitarian in CWE is closer to me, but I really clicked with this place so I would drive farther to go here. With working overtime a lot and the overnight 12 hour shifts, getting out there is going to be hard, but this place is so neat that I'm really going to try to make the effort. Loved it.

I grew up in this church and consider the congregation family. I was Christened as a baby there and…read morewent through Confirmation there too, and even though I have moved away to another state, I am always welcomed back to the church with open arms. My husband and I were also married there. We decided to Christen our daughter at St. John's while we were back in town visiting family, and the new pastor is wonderful. The staff is excellent, kind, and helpful.

Churches on Yelp, now this is interesting... Of course I'm going to give my own church a 5-star…read morerating. Pastor Rall gives one awesome sermon and so does Pastor Wilson. This is not a mega-church, it's your typical neighborhood congregation, which is why I love it so. They mostly stick to traditional Lutheran church service but do have maranatha Sundays with - what I like to call - hippie church music (acoustic guitar, etc). I will note that I still miss the blue hymnals, but what good old Lutheran doesn't? (Garrison Keillor has some good jokes on this). Everyone here is very friendly and they have a good variety of bible studies and other activities, if that's your thing. Sunday services are at 8:00 and 10:45am, Monday evening service at 7:00pm - communion is offered at each service. This is a Missouri Synod Lutheran (LCMS) church, you Wisconsin'ers are welcome to worship elsewhere :-)
