We were tired of watching churches spend gobs of money renovating buildings that were just fine the way they were. We were tired of the superficiality and wastefulness we were seeing. At Refuge, we weren't met with useless frills and gift bags, but with genuine people that seemed to genuinely want to get to know us. It wasn't creepy or robotic or weird; these people loved us and each other the way Christians are supposed to. The services teach truth right from the bible, and head pastor, Trey Herweck knows how to deliver a message. He and the staff sometimes make fun of themselves just the way that real people do. Trey personally introduced himself on our first day before we even knew he'd be the guy doing the teaching. I went to one church for almost 5 years without ever meeting the head pastor, and here was this guy shaking my hand on day one, just like he does every Sunday. These are good people and my wife and kids and I couldn't be happier.

I've visited Victory Church three times now on visits to St. Peters, MO, to see my aunt and uncle and accompanied them to Sunday morning services and then to fellowship lunch afterwards at nearby restaurants (one Italian and another a great sandwich deli). I made no secret of the fact that I'm a gay woman living in the S.F. Bay Area, and at the time had a partner. I didn't "shove" my orientation down anyone's throat who asked, but simply chit-chatted and made conversation with all who engaged me, and everyone was super-friendly, accepted me for WHO I am (a community-minded, decent and kind Christian lesbian) and never raised their eyebrows and gasped. Victory Church has a terrific modern band (keyboards, drummer, bass, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, and vocalists) and they make Christian music really joyous and fun to listen to and participate in. If you're going to church on Sunday and want to be awakened by great music, this is it. Oh, some other really great details: one particular Sunday, they had this wonderful former mob "enforcer" named Jack who was now a motorcycle evangelist who, with his wife, have ministered to thousands of inmates and "tough-guy" types. He was the featured minister one morning I attended, and his testimony and stories were both mesmerizing and compelling. I left with a new appreciation for some of the incredible good that motorcycle gang members can do, and since I live in the Oakland, California area, I've come to appreciate as well the good that some of the local biker groups do here as well. God works in strange and mysterious ways... and I hope he blesses Pastor Bob, Gail, my aunt and uncle, and all their friends and fellow congregation members at Victory Church. This is a wonderful church.

In a church this size a lot of times people get lost in the mix. That's not the case. This church is large and has multiple services but if you plug in, to anything really, you will make many lasting friendships. We are now in a small group that we were invited to check out during one of our first visits. Those people have become a second family since we have none locally. We meet weekly and have lots of non study get together as well. It's not a chore, we want to be more involved because the people are just great. The kids programs are great as well, Vbs and winshape and even Just Sunday morning services for children's church are very well thought out. As for the church, they are honest with their beliefs but they are not uncaring, finger pointing, or the "judgemental" Christians that people have unfortunately seen lately. They are not "anything goes" in their beliefs but they are certainly loving and compassionate Christians that treat others the way Jesus asked us to. I am so thankful for what this church has done for my family and look forward to what is to come. Our son recently accepted Jesus as savior and we are excited to see him grow up in this church and learn to serve others. Something that is discussed and encouraged often here.
