I purchased my wedding dress from a boutique sale. It was beautiful, reasonably priced, and 5 dress sizes too big. The boutique told me their starting price for alterations, which already was out of my budget. A friend of mine recommended Dana's shop, and told me she did a wonderful job on her wedding dress. I didn't have services done here - so I can't speak to that but only their customer service which was BAD I'm in a very stressful situation. My wedding dress was altered incorrectly by my first tailor & now the wedding is in 2.5 weeks. I came in to see if they could fix it. They went OFF about my dress saying it was botched and every part of it needed to be fixed, causing me to panic (of course). I only wanted one part of the dress fixed, as I'm on a budget and it's the only part with a visible flaw. Because my emotions were so high, I told them I needed the night to think about it before I committed. That's when the older seamstress said "fine. Go if you want, I have plenty of dresses to work on" I have heard great things about their tailoring but ultimately chose a different shop because of the way they treated me. Grace fashion has completed many big alterations on bridesmaid dresses for me for +10 years now. They are always reasonably priced and perfectly altered. I trust them 100% with any price point. They just did one of my dresses and I'm so pleased with how everything turned out I'm keeping it for future events. I always need the waist taken in because I'm busty so need to go way up in size on the dress orders. Then, because I'm 5'11, length has to get added... therefore needs hemming. I was really happy with my experience here. I had my wedding dress shipped to me 2 months before my wedding and luckily they were able to tailor my dress in time! There was a lot of work on the bottom of my dress and I know the alterations were not easy. They had to shorten it a lot and then tighten it in a few areas. I actually had brought this dress to another alterations place, and had lost hope in this dress ever fitting me the way I wanted it to. It was too big and hung on me like a drape. I brought it here as a last minute save before I cut my losses and bought another dress. Dana agreed to take this on... a MONTH before my wedding! It was pricey ($400) but worth it. She expertly took out a panel of the corset on each side, and painstakingly sewed each individual beaded flower back on the bodice. She shortened the bottom of the dress, and carefully measured out the lines to keep the bubble shape. If I had known how much work this was, I might not have bought the dress! But Dana had me come in for a few fittings to make sure that all of the work was done to fit me perfectly. She made sure I could sit down in it. That I practiced walking in it, with the heels I would wear on the wedding day. She helped me bustle it (7-point bustle, because the train of the dress is off to one side). She even took pictures of the back of the dress for me, so I could really see it. I got SO MANY COMPLIMENTS on this dress! My grandmother was a professional seamstress before she retired, and she said this was the most beautiful dress she had seen. (She might be slightly biased). Wedding guests told me it had the "wow factor." People on the street stared at my dress. Another bride I crossed paths with during our first look pictures told me how beautiful my dress was (I was nice and returned the compliment). But what made it worth every penny was the look on my fiance's face when he saw me. Worth. Every. Penny. Since it came from a sample dress store, I obviously needed alterations done, and the first place that Glamour Closet will refer you to is Davis Imperial Cleaners. After my first appointment with Davis Imperial, I left with my dress in hand in search of a talented seamstress that would be reasonably priced. Davis Imperial is white glove service, and you definitely pay for their services plus a hefty mark-up. My mom and I both found Dana through Yelp and I made an appointment right away. To say the least, my dress looked like it was literally custom made for me on my wedding day. She did such a beautiful job with every aspect of the alterations, and I also had her make my veil which was absolute perfection. The price for my overall alternations on the dress was MUCH more reasonable and worth every single penny. I brought a bridesmaids dress here that needed a lot of work in 2013. I am petite and the boning in the top of a dress was too long. They let me know that it would be too much work and that they could only bring it in and hem it. I was disappointed but understood. I was charged $100 which seemed pretty steep. Fast forward to 2018. I just stopped by with two bridesmaids dresses out of location convenience and the rush I was in. The hours are posted both online and at the shop with hours opening at 9am. I walked up to the door which was locked and saw the women at their machines. I knocked and they wagged their fingers at me. They couldn't bother to get up and come to the door to explain. I don't know if they weren't taking any business or if they were just too lazy to say they weren't opening yet. Either way I was shocked at the finger wagging and won't be returning. It was such a pleasure working with Dana. She did an amazing job altering my fiancé's wedding dress on short notice, and for a reasonable price. It's obvious that she's been doing this type of work for a while, and truly knows her way around a sewing machine. Please don't be put off by the small number of other reviews that speak poorly about her personality. She's simply from another generation & culture (think "eastern European grandmother"), and has a very dry sense of humor. Her accent admittedly made communication slightly tricky at times. I hate hate hate to give Dana 3 stars because I really did enjoy working with her overall for my wedding dress alterations, but now that everything is said and done and the wedding is over and I've seen pictures of me in the dress, I really wish I had been more assertive and told her that I was not totally satisfied with my alterations...but I wish I hadn't have had to in the first place because she should have seen that my dress was NOT up to par and did not fit my body correctly. I paid $400 for alterations here, and I was fine with the price because my dress had several layers of tulle. However, even though the hem was measured when I was wearing 3 inch heels and I ultimately wore 4 inch heels (Dana said she'd left an inch extra in case I got higher heels...) the hem was STILL too long with the higher heels so I spent much of my wedding day tripping over the front of my dress or holding it up. When I called this to her attention during my final dress fitting, she told me it would cost another $400 to fix. So I dealt with it and it was annoying. But the hem wasn't the big thing that I regret. The big issue for me was that the fabric of the fitted bodice of the dress had a layer of tulle over it and the fabric underneath the tulle bunched up really weird and made me look like I had a gut and just looked bad. I hated it. When I asked Dana if she could fix it she said "stand up straight and you won't be able to see it." I shouldn't have to "stand up straight" for my wedding dress to fit correctly. It simply should fit. Now I have a bunch of pictures with the bodice of my wedding dress looking messy and ill-fitted. I'm very disappointed, especially because I loved my wedding dress soooo much; it was perfect for me except for the bad tailoring. Plus she added sleeves that were measured incorrectly and were too big so that I had to wear fashion tape to keep them from falling. Again, you shouldn't have to tape up sleeves...they should fit your shoulders, especially when you're having a professional tailor them for you! Luckily, overall, I looked fabulous on my wedding day regardless but I really wish I had gone to a different alterationist. I should have just taken the dress to the women at David's Bridal who are used to doing alterations on my exact dress. I feel like she went the lazy route on me. Sorry, Dana. :-( read more

I am a shorty of 5'1" and always have difficulty having to find something that fits. Dana worked magic on my dress. I am performing my brother's wedding ceremony in a June and need to make sure that I look A-mazing. My dress from David's Bridal was in between sizes because of my height, and I was swimming in it. I wasn't about to spend the astronomical alteration $$$ price at DB, so searched all over Yelp to find someone a little more in my price range. The 5 star reviews swayed me in the right direction. She was perfect! I felt in good hands once I walked in from her careful pinning to her sincerity that made me feel comfortable leaving my expensive DB dress with her. Her work was flawless and at a great price. She was able to tuck and trimm everything in and make it look like it was never altered in the first place. I purchased my wedding dressed late last year from a well known bridal shop here in Chicago. Well, I was given incorrect information about when I could actually get alterations done to the dress. To make a long story short the bridal shop could not complete the alterations. Needless to say I started scrambling, I needed to find a seamstress and in a hurry. My bff found Dana which is really pronounced as Donna. She explained to her that I needed alterations done in 2 1/2 weeks and she was fine with that. I went in for the appointment and the first thing she says is, "Dress is too big for bride!" I had lost 35 pounds since the time I bought my size 12 dress. Once I tried on the dress I had to literally hold it up. Dana quickly started pinning, pulling and marking off areas to be altered. She did not make me feel any type of way because I had waited so late to get alterations done. She was extremely accommodating and approachable about any ideas I had for the dress. I think I was so happy that she actually agreed to do the alterations with so short notice. Within a couple of weeks we squeezed in 3 dress fittings. I was leaving the country for my wedding so I was scheduled for the last fitting the day before I left town. I went to pick the dress up and it was not complete. After we talked, she explained that she had the pickup dates wrong. At this time it was about 11am and I was leaving for the airport at 2am. She reassured me that everything would be fine and I could pick up the dress later that night. I was not worried one bit because of the type person she is. She stands by her word, honorable and a hard worker. We are human and mistakes happen all the time nonetheless she did not let that stop her. I went back at 10pm to pick up the dress and it was ready. We hugged, kissed and I left. (side note: she had 5 more dresses to finish that night) Her hands are truly blessed! read more

I've had more dresses altered than I can count because my body is a size small, but my chest is more of a large... dresses never fit me... especially bridesmaid dresses. She did the best work out of any seamstress by far! 2 months before my wedding I bought a sample gown that was way too big. I'm a wedding novice and didn't anticipate having trouble getting somebody to alter it for me! Dana was my fourth call and she was able to accommodate the short time frame. She expertly tailored my dress, hemmed it perfectly and made a lovely bustle. I would love to give her 5 stars because I think she's a sweet woman who works her butt off. However, I was frustrated by how difficult it was to get her to alter it the way I wanted. I have a feeling she's been burned before with brides who wanted their dress skin tight and then gained weight, etc. I wasn't looking for skin tight, but I absolutely wanted this dress to be fitted and it was a challenge to make that happen. Dana is FANTASTIC. After reading reviews for all the tailors in Lakeview, I picked her. I came in with my wedding dress, which was about a half size too small after some pre-wedding over indulgence. In a panic that all my working out wasn't making any dent in my larger chest, she reassured me that she could easily get it done. On my first fitting, she calmed me down, reassured me it wasn't as bad as I thought it was, and gave me the step-by-step process she would use to fix it. For my second fitting about a month later, it was PERFECT. It zipped and there was no way to tell it was altered. She insisted on keeping it longer so she could put in a bigger clasp and steam it properly. DONE DEAL. All said, I paid about 25% less than what I would have paid at the dress shop. Dana's shop is clean, located in a nice spot, and her customer service has been excellent from start to finish. I will continue to use her for any other alterations I may need in the future. read more

Dana (pronounced "Donna") is fantastic. I am very short with a curvy pear shaped figure, and I brought an off-the-rack dress in that I hoped to wear to my wedding. Of course it needed more than minor alterations. You can tell she really wants to make her clients look great, and even though my dress looked and fit OK at my first fitting, she still made a few more changes to make it fit even better. It needed a major overhaul, but now it fits like it was made for me, and I'm so happy. She doesn't charge too much, either, like some other tailors I tried previously, whose eyes lit up with dollar signs when they saw that it was my wedding dress. I will certainly come back for all of my future alterations. Dana is also very friendly and witty, which makes standing still and getting pinned much more pleasant. Unfriendly Service I brought 2 work skirts and 2 work pants to be altered as reviews were so positive on yelp. The woman who helped me was horribly unfriendly. She was not only mean, but even aggressive when pinning my garments. I should have walked out, but I am sort of shy so endured the experience. After two rounds of fixes, the skirts are "ok" at best and the pants are still unwearable. I paid the money owed and will go else ware to redo the alterations. read more

If you want an amazing alterations experience, go to Dana! She is the sweetest lady with a subtle, yet hilarious, sense of humor. It was a breath of fresh air after an absolutely atrocious experience at David's Bridal (see previous review for location on Elston). A little bit of customer service goes a long way and Dana is completely, 100% client focused - the exact opposite of what I experienced at DB. The funny part is when I walked in for my first appointment, Dana noticed that it was a DB dress and asked, "Why are so many people bringing me David's Bridal dresses?" At which point I noticed 5 or 6 similar garment bags on her rack. That made me smile. My wedding dress weighs about as much as a sixth grader and yet Dana insisted on carrying it from the rack to the dressing room and back while claiming, "I need the exercise" :) She also showed me three different versions of a bustle, which I didn't even know was possible. The dress fit perfectly the first time around. She even gave me some tips for how to keep my sash in place. When my fiance drove me to pick up the dress, she helped me carry it out to the car and gave us both best wishes. She is so affordable and does work quickly. Dana is meticulous and a treasured gem in the city! You cannot find a tailor like her anymore. She pays attention to every minor detail and doesn't take shortcuts when hemming. She kept the intricate lace! The dress had three layers and I'm quite sure it was no easy feat to get this done, but she managed to give me three fittings up to the week of my wedding. As a bride-to-be you can imagine the utter horror that might ensue when you find out that your bridal salon cancelled your wedding dress fitting less than a month before your wedding unexplained. The salon had no better explanation other than that they were in the middle of their busy season. They would not provide a recommendation either. OK. Deep breath. I can do this. The girl on the other end of my phone convo with my bridal salon suggested Googling 'Bridal Gown Alterations'. So, as a 21st Century Bride, I took to the internet and, gratefully, found Dana. Dana. I've waited about a year to write this review because of how upset I was with my wedding gown alterations. I went to Grace to have a small alteration made to the bust of my gown. My gown fit like a glove, but the strapless bust line wasn't laying against my skin and I could look down and see my chest inside my dress. After a consultation/fitting I was assured they could adjust the bust so it would lay against my chest and I wouldn't feel so exposed, I really didn't want a "nip slip" at my wedding! What she didn't tell me was that to make that adjustment they would have to take in my dress 1/2"+ from both sides!!! If I had known this I would've gotten other opinions and seriously considered the alterations. So I went in for my next fitting, and my dress does not zip! She is pulling tighter and tighter and it barely zipped with my breasts and back spilling over and I couldn't breathe and was worried about the dress busting. One of my bridesmaids was with me (she sold wedding gowns at the time) and mentioned to the woman it was all wrong and how terrible I looked. I was in shock and holding back tears. So we head to the dressing room to take off the gown. The seamstress then asked me "if I had been to the gym lately, and if I eat cake and waffles and cookies a lot" because "brides eat a lot and sometimes blame the alterations" I was mortified and almost in tears. We asked to have the dress returned to the original state and she then turned my dress inside out in a huff and was tossing it around quickly through the layers of fabric and tossed it on the table and asked "WHERE DO I LET IT OUT?!". My friend mentioned that we aren't seamstresses and that she should be giving US options on how to fix it. Needless to say I left speechless and in shock and cried the whole way home. After two more fittings with Grace Alterations my dress was still not fitting 2 weeks before my wedding. I ended up taking it to a shop on Armitage and ended up paying more than half the cost of my gown on all the alterations it took to screw up, and then have my dress fixed.
