My son has been attending kids classes 1-3 x week for about a year. Coaches are very attentive and knowledgeable and give positive, encouraging corrections. The facility and bathrooms are clean. There is plenty of street parking. Not much seating area for parents but it's easy enough to bring a chair to sit outside the open bay door. It is difficult to get phone/email responses sometimes but you can always approach a coach to get what you need. Good pricing for three 1-hour classes per week. Great program that encourages both casual instruction and competitive training depending on your goals. read more

The agreement does not mention any thing about you can't cancel your membership during holding period. This judo school just wants to make more money. After people try to stop membership 30 days ahead during holding period, they say 'no, we will charge you for one more month!'. Don't go to this school! And being Racial Discrimination thinking a Chinese immigrant does not understand English!!! The true reason is that they don't want to follow the agreement and just make more money. I believe in Zhehao's case being that he recently migrated from China there may have been a language barrier (English being his second language) that prevented him from understanding what he signed and agreed to. So weird making this review. I trained shaolin kempo for 13 years and taught for 6. I would say I have been in the martial arts world for awhile. I was so excited to try a new style. I was told to get to the Dojo ten minutes early, which I did. I was not even greeted till 15 minutes into the class I was supposed to be in. I was not told how the class worked, and that it goes week by week. So i was thrown into the class without understanding what all of my partners were working on. My Sensei really did not help me at all, he just walked around briefly and gave me pointers. After I went up to the office to chat about pricing, and I really did not know what to do. I want to try a new style, but I feel like this Dojo was very unprofessional and disappointing. :( I am looking for a new place to train. read more

My son's been a part of Gracie Barra Kapolei for about 3 or 4 months now, and he continues to love everything about it. In a perspective of a parent whose child was being bullied in school, I was already nervous that my son, being super new to this, will be the kid that gets pinned down easily by other kids in class (side note: he's in the younger age range in the Teen class) then his self-esteem will double-down and not like it. But it was the uttermost opposite! The coaches & professor(s) are very clear in explaining moves, and are very friendly and approachable. All the kids are also very much helpful towards my son. When they spar, some of them taught him how to position his hands correctly and tell him what move to do next if he's confused, some of them patted on his shoulder and gave him praises---it was such a nice breath of fresh air to witness respect & integrity amongst kids. The final topping on the cake is that my son met his best friend since Day 1. My 6 year old goes here and they are really good with the kids. My son's class is quite large at times, 30 kids or more sometimes, so each kid doesn't always get proper instruction during the practice or sparring, but when they do get to your child they take care of them as best as they can. How open your child is to instruction is also a factor. Some of the kids are there just standing around not taking much interest and going through the motions, others goof off, while most are really good at performing the techniques. Who your child is partnered up with is random. Usually they will put a lower belt with a senior belt in Hope's that the senior belt can help with lower belt with the moves. My son has been going for a few months and he enjoys it and I enjoy watching him learn something I wished I got into when I was younger. He really gets into the sparring. Gracie Barra also holds family events for the members and their families. The last event was the Halloween party and that was fun to attend and participate in. Highly recommended. read more

Great place to learn and train. All the professors and coaches provide high quality instruction and promote a safe and friendly atmosphere. I was apprehensive and intimidated about being the new guy when I first joined, but everyone's welcoming attitude really makes you quickly feel like part of the team here. The class schedule is also great for a busy person like me. There are fundamentals class every day the week! The fundamentals class is very structured which I prefer. It starts off with a 10 minute warm up, 40 minutes of instruction (learning three techniques and practicing), and finally 10 minutes of positional sparring. For training purposes you will get paired off with a more senior belt (usually in similar stature and gender) to practice with. There are guys and gals of all shapes and sizes so don't feel like you are too weak or overweight to start BJJ. They offer a free trial class with no pressure to commit to enrollment. Been going steady for 3 months at GBK. Great experience every time I'm in class. Very knowledgeable professors and coaches. It Really feels like a family and is very welcoming. They throw events in the Parking lot for Halloween and other holidays like that. Made some good friends at this place too. They also don't push you to compete if you're not up to it. Professor Elias and his Team are so amazing!!! We been with them for about 6 months now and I have seen major improvements with my 2 boys. Although, my 4 year old no longer attends because of schedule conflicts. I can confidently say that Professor Elias can command attention and focus!! With a twist of fun for the little ones!! My little one always had a hard time in focusing and concentrating in school. Ever since he attended classes, he learned about self control and paying more attention:) The best part from all of this experience is the family environment!!! GBK has a great atmosphere! Dropped in for a class while on vacation. Email responsiveness to provide info during the holidays was perfect (Thanks Brendan). Never been to a GB school prior. The structure was very conducive for learning. Moves were broken down into bite size pieces and then put back together so it would make sense. Patrick was the head instructor for that evening (he is also the youth program instructor) was well spoken, attentive to the students, very upbeat, and made sure everyone was not overwhelmed.
