This gym may be small but the quality of coaching makes up for it and then some. I had been searching for adult private lessons for a while and had almost given up when I came across this one. Coach Cynthia was extremely speedy with her response and I was eager to start. I have always wanted to be able to do backhandsprings but I am terrified of going backwards. I've tried multiple times with others but have never been able to do the skill. Over a two month span of having a lesson a week, Coach Cynthia broke every single part down and made sure I was ready before trying to put everything together. There were alot of things I was doing that were preventing me from getting the skill when previously trying. Coach Cynthia was very thorough in explaining every part which made me feel safe and less scared to go backwards. Coach Cynthia is a great teacher who is positive and supportive. I left the gym after each lesson knowing something new and feeling acomplished. This is also a family run gym which I love! I have always found that family run businesses are more welcoming and give you a sense of home. I know I will return for more lessons throughout the years. Mm. There are basically no places on Oahu that provide adult gymnastics and if there are, let me know!! I stayed at work one day rather than go back to my home office in order to be closeby and attend the adult gymnastics class. Athough the facility was nice, it's really tiny. The size of a single company warehouse. They sure do get creative with the space - in that there was a private lesson happening and the kid was tumbling through our class space as well. This would be an amazing aerial studio (high ceilings) but it's pretty cramped, although I have to say they do their best to utilize the space efficiently. This review is for adult gymnastics only. In short: it's the kids class, with adults participating. Not very satisfying. And my warmup was led by like a six year old. As an adult participant, I was not impressed, but don't keep this from bringing your children. read more

Very disappointed with their customer service. I was charged all of my previous months on the 20th of every month so I emailed them on the 18th to cancel as per their policy is to cancel 48 hours prior to the billing cycle. Every single month we were charged on the 20th then I get an email from them saying that my billing date is the 17th. My charge did not go through for the next month yet and I cancelled 48 hours prior to when I was regularly charged yet they refuse to cancel the pending charge. Their customer service is horrible and they just seem money hungry. I have been to other locally owned gyms who would easily refund us if we emailed them 48 hours prior to when they bill but I guess this gym does not care about their clients. The overall gym is very small, there is another review for adult gymnastics that gives it 2/3 stars and I have to agree with them. You spend more than half the class stretching and maybe 10 minutes doing actually gymnastics. Sometimes you only do the activity once because of how little time you're given doing actual gymnastics. I would recommend another place that has two hour adult gymnastics for half the price! read more

The latest: After the girls competed in Aloha Gymfest, I can say that there is no way I'd have my daughter learning from any other gym. The coaches at Manakoa have coached my daughter for a little over a year now and she just competed for the first time. The team was PHENOMENAL-not just in their routines but in their sportsmanship, manners, and perseverance. After watching them compete against other gyms I noticed that the Manakoa athletes always congratulated others at the podium. They also look healthy and have muscle tone, so the nutrition information the gymnasts get is actually fueling them! While participating in a two day gymnastics badge event for Girl Scouts, she fell in love with the sport. Manakoa has provided dedication, improved her skill, and provided the discipline needed for my daughter. My daughter has improved over a year. We were on vacation on Oahu the week before her team had a travel meet in CA, so I arranged for her to have 2 private lessons with Coach Sarah at Manakoa Gym. He didn't seem bothered or irritated and he seemed to acknowledge that I was a very interested parent with lots of questions and concerns. We love Manakoa! My children took recreational classes at another gymnastics place for 2 years. Not much attention given to the kids considering the high cost per month. They herded them in, took our money & herded them out. I could go on & on....of course we left. We were on a mission to find a gymnastics place. I would first like to write this review by saying that the coaches here are amazing! My daughter is very shy and takes some time to get used to new people (like maybe half the kids her age, she is 7), I watched from the sidelines (only students are allowed inside of the gym) and was very nervous. When the class started the coach invited everyone for that class inside, and she noticed my daughter was new and immediately exchanged introductions. As class went on I noticed the coach pay a little more attention to my daughter, which put me at ease because she had never done anything like this. What I really liked was that there was a mix from beginners to advanced but they were all treated the same and the coaches helped those who needed it and also gave pointers. The gym is very clean and they have bathrooms as well. You have to street park which isn't a huge problem since it was a Saturday (not sure how easy it is for parking during the work week since there are businesses). They have drop in rates as well as monthly and private lessons. I initially signed my daughter up for a drop in class and she loved it so I signed her up for monthly classes. I chose Manakoa Gym because they had the most stars/best reviews on Yelp and I can see why! Would definitely recommend Manakoa Gym!! read more

My 6 and 8 year old daughters have been going here for around 9 months and they love it. They have a lot of fun, and the staff is very nice, welcoming, and great at teaching gymnastics. I like how they offer a lot of class times throughout the week, and that the staff is very communicative with parents. The gym is also very clean. I've been to a lot of gyms and you cannot find better coaching or a better environment. How do you know if you or your kid is being coached well? Unfortunately, it's hard to tell unless you are already an expert. Here are two things to look for. 1) Look for a coach who has a fantastic attitude. Gymnastics is difficult and when things don't go well, you want a coach who can smile and keep you moving in the right direction and with the right attitude. 2) Find a coach who is always prepared and knows every progression for every skill. Every step in gymnastics should be just a wee bit more challenging than the last so that over time you'll find yourself doing moves that at first seemed impossible. This family-operated gym is a clean and safe environment for kids at all ages who are just starting or training for competitions. Then we heard about Manakoa Gym through a friend and as soon as I made an inquiry, I was able to get in touch with Coach Ralph and he set us up for a trial with much ease and flexibility. Took my soon to be 5yo daughter for her first class Monday evening w/Coach Cynthia. She is very upbeat professional and sweet. I called a week prior for information and she was very thorough and patient. My daughter was the youngest one in the class with beginner girls up to age 12 but they were all kind and great examples for my baby girl, about 10 or 12 girls total to the one coach and there was a second coach that joined in the last 25% of the class time. $95 monthly tuition for 1-hr class 1x week not bad. Where do I begin! I absolutely LOVE Manakoa gym and the staff... It's a Beautiful brand new gymnastics facility centrally located in Aiea, right off the Highway, whether you are coming from the east side, west side, or even windward side. It took one visit for us to sign my son (age 11) up. Process was easy, very professional staff, very affordable for the quality of instruction. My son not only gets to learn gymnastics from Coach Sarah, a former NCAA collegiate gymnast, but also gets to learn some pretty amazing academic lessons from highly credentialed teachers, Coach Cynthia and Coach Ralph, which are built into the hour long class. My son has learned to do back flips, increased his flexibility, all the while learning SAT words and Newton's law of motion... That is a huge BANG for your Buck!! My son absolutely LOVES going to the gym. To continue to top this gym off, it also offers Adult gymnastics classes which are led by Sarah and her partner, Certified Trainer, Joe. No need to be ashamed of your level of fitness, I am an obese woman in my thirty somethings, and with Coach Sarah and Joe's help I am able to do things I haven't done since I was a teenager... They are both patient and very positive in their coaching, it's always a good time. This is a gym for the entire family. My daughter also gets tutoring from Ralph. My daughter struggles with ADD and she has gone from a C- in her Honors Chemistry class to an A-, in just one visit... Ralph is amazing! It literally only took one, 1 hour lesson... My daughter Loves his patience and enthusiasm to teach. She will definitely continue her tutoring. This gym is more than just a gym, you really feel like a part of a family. I am sooo happy I found Manakoa Gym. I have to fly across the ocean from my home island to get there (30 minutes boarding to landing plus drives) and it is SO worth it. I called during their winter break and was amazed that Cynthia answered the phone. I'm in my 30's and LOVE acrobatics, gymnastics, tumbling. I've wanted to do gymnastics regularly and even dreamt of competitions as a child (but had to wait to grow up to be that child haha!) Luckily they have competition for adults - even beginner adults - so I'm looking forward to training enough to participate in those and making some of my deepest dreams come true. When I told them which days I was coming and asked which classes I could join and for a private, I was so lovingly accommodated and being shy at first, so appreciated all of their warmth. I feel so blessed this place exists as Coach Cynthia, Coach Ralphie, and Coach Sarah are WONDERFUL. I've learned so much after just a few classes this past week with them and overcome fears I've had with their great teaching strategies, styles of explanation, drills, fun gymnastics games, with focus on kinesthetic, visual, auditory, and ideas of how to best train for various skills. So wonderful to be able to train on floor, beam, bars and have almost daily adult classes - with kids - and work towards real skills and tricks as well as learn basics that other classes for adults haven't covered (while I'm there at least) - walking like a gymnast, saluting judges and beam, correct position of hands and fingers, the details that make it all more real. Really appreciate being so warmly welcomed into the gymnastics family! I went to bed after my first class feeling so grateful for this new family. And one younger girl said it best when she heard I was leaving gymnastics until my next return to their island (in about a month) - "I would never want this place taken away from me. They have taught me so much. I love coming here. I hope it's here for the rest of my life" - All I could say back, was that I feel the same. It's more than simply a work out or stretching or tumbling or even overcoming fears. It's truly a place where everyone I have seen is smiling after class, unfailingly. And such an empowering place to train where every participant takes turns leading the warm up and stretches, though of course with coaches watching and walking around making sure everyone is doing the activity correctly. In the camp classes I got to watch before my classes, I was also completely enjoying how all the gymnasts were rooting for each other's success and encouraging them as they were working on their routine. It's really a well done gymnastics facility and a fantastic place to train and learn gymnastics as an adult or child. I'm sure there are more specifics I could say after my first partial week of training with them daily, but I'll leave it at this and wish you a wonderful training session. This is definitely a perfect place to go if you are at all interested in learning something gymnastics oriented - whether you have had gymnastics training in the past or not - and from the bit I've seen a great spot for kids to have gymnastics classes with great attentive care and coaches who really do their best to explain what gymnasts are practicing, how best to practice it, and why in simple terms. I am also in awe of the fact that the place is SO caring and encouraging that even doing skills one at a time with some parents / friends waiting outside is not intimidating. It's a great place to simply grow into a more wonderful human being - the lessons and skills and care can be applied to so many parts of life. I wish all sorts of 'schools' were like this! I THOUGHT I had already written a review but I guess not. My kids have been going here about a year and I couldn't be happier!!! My son has made so much progress! We used to go on base and he got good on a trampoline but not at actual gymnastics. We started here and the change was amazing! He's learning rings, pummel horse, vault. He's in love! It's the perfect environment for him. He does NOT do well with coaches who yell instead of encouraging. The spirit of praise and team work is taught here. I love seeing the kids clapping for each other when someone gets a move right! He started and couldn't pull himself up on a rope even once. Now he can go all the way to the ceiling. He has slimmed down and gotten healthy! I also love how they take some time to teach something educational as well. My daughter is much younger. She loves coach Cynthia. She calls the kids in her class her friends. The coaches foster that caring for each other environment. She's 4 and has learned to stand by herself on the beam and hang and do things on the bar. Came here for a couple of days while on vacation. My daughter never met the coach and it didn't seem to matter. She was able to quickly bond and work with her over the few days we were visiting. My 3 yr old daughter loved going to gymnastics every Sunday with Coach Cynthia. They usually do a warm up/stretching, circuits on the different equipment, and then parachute time towards the end of class.
