Reflecting on my first day of BJJ... I must admit I was a little anxious about it. As the others filed in, I came to the realization that I was at least twice their age, easily out weighed them by 130 pounds and considerable more out of shape. Class started promptly with calisthenics and stretching. Colin, the instructor, did a great job of working me into the routine while still keeping the others on track. Next we worked on three drills. Colin once again did a great job of explaining what we were doing, why we were doing it and where to go if the technique went south. Each drill was demonstrated with at least two different students and we were all given the chance to ask questions. After each example, we were split into groups and allowed to practice. Colin seemed to have a very good situational awareness of what we were all doing, often making inputs from across the room if needed and seeming to be in the right place always at the right time. The class ended with a summary of what we did and what to expect next class as well as administrative issues and scheduling. Now the nitty-gritty. I couldn't have had a better first experience. The "kids" that I thought I would be "dealing" with were all very polite, welcoming and supportive. Not once did I feel like the fat old new guy and the instruction was top shelf! Am I sore? Yes! My daughter enjoys class so much she is always excited to come back! Not only is this a way for her to be active and be off of the couch but she is learning the valuable skills needed to defend herself should the need ever arise. That in itself to me is priceless. Coach Colin is so patient with all the kids and even the adults! The facility is always clean and put together while the schedule is open to a broad range of class times for the whole family! Prices are very reasonable considering your child may attend any of the classtimes in their level as many times as its offered each week for one set fee per month. The curriculum is well-organized, sessions flow nicely, time is expertly managed, and the atmosphere is respectful and friendly while conjuring an impressive focus even amongst the kids in their classes. Coach Colin Nichols is an amazing instructor, with seemingly endless patience with both me and my young boys. He's very good at explaining things clearly, as well as maintaining a perfect balance of fun and that martial arts kind of discipline. My kids and I are loving it, although it's definitely work! He always has time for each individual in both adult and junior classes, and we go as often as we can! I feel valued and respected, and the work is as challenging as I make it. My classmates were super friendly to me too, welcoming me with open arms, & I already consider them friends. I just started at Gracie Barra in Tyler and so far I am very pleased. I wanted to try something out of my comfort zone that would help with my cardio and flexibility along with challenging me mentally and physically... I have to say so far that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu meets those goals. Gracie Barra Tyler is a great place to train. Colin Nichols is great with explaining why we are working certain skills and he takes the time to ensure that I have a good grasp of the material being presented. I have taken BJJ classes all over the country with about a dozen coaches. Coach Colin is undoubtedly one of the best. His skill and knowledge is amazing but it is his ability to coach that truly makes him special. He not only quickly gets to know his students' strengths and weaknesses but their learning style so he can quickly help to maximize improvements. Any age, any skill level, he will make you better! Colin taught at our Gracie Barra in St. Louis. He is an awesome teacher and I was sad to see him go, however, Tyler Texas has gained a great BJJ instructor. What I really liked about Colin was his patience with the kids class. They really loved him. If you have kids that are interested in getting into martial arts or if you are interested, I highly recommend BJJ for anybody.
