About me: 41 years old, male, college athlete (rowing), 25 years experience lifting weights. I'm 6'5" and weighed about 210 lbs. when I started at Fitbody. Greg is the first personal trainer I have ever worked with. Fitbody is located on the second floor of a commercial building in Avon, CT. It is clean and private. There are a wide variety of dumbbells, weighted balls, resistance bands, mats, and benches. There is also a Smith Machine with plenty of plates for presses and squats. Lots of natural light and good music to motivate you. Having never worked with a trainer before, I wasn't sure what to expect from Greg. Whatever expectations I had going in, Greg exceeded them. First, Greg is extremely professional: he is accommodating when it comes to scheduling workouts; always on time; always prepared when I enter the gym; never on his cell phone or distracted with other things; completely focused on me and my workout. Second, he is knowledgeable: he explains the purpose of every exercise, varies workouts to keep things challenging, and introduced many new exercises to my routine. Third, Greg is motivating: he has a positive attitude; compliments me when I work hard or show improvement; pushes me when he sees that I'm dogging it; and makes difficult workouts more fun. The workouts are challenging. Each session, we focus on a specific body part: for me, the split is as follows: (1) chest, (2) biceps, (3) shoulders, (4) back, (5) triceps, and (6) legs. We usually do 4 sets of various exercises focused on the applicable body part (i.e. on chest day we may do incline bench press, dumbbell press, push-ups, and cable flys). Between sets is where the real fun happens- rather than rest, Greg has me perform various plyometric exercises like running up and down stairs, pushing a weighted sled, jumping on and off a bench, hitting the punching bag, etc. The cumulative effect is exhausting but very effective. Every workout concludes with some abdominal work. There is a tremendous feeling of accomplishment after each workout that I appreciate almost as much as the gains I have made. Greg has provided me with an opportunity to work hard and feel good about my effort and progress. And I have definitely made great progress, especially when I worked with Greg on my diet. I have lost 20 lbs. over the course of about 5 months- I'm now 190 lbs. and 10% body fat. I can see veins in my abs, arms, chest, and shoulders. At 41 years old, I don't think I've ever looked this good. I am proud of my body and the progress I've made while working with Greg at Fitbody It took me a while to pick up the phone and call Greg to schedule my first workout, but I'm really glad that I did. I checked out Raquel's website and read her bio. I found it cool that she's a mom of a young child b/c as a new mom I've been working on finding time to fit fitness into my hectic schedule. We signed up for the 5:30 am class through the Mindbody app. I've used Mindbody in the past and it makes sign up, cancelling (if necessary), and receiving reminders very easy so I'm glad Raquel uses it. There's a parking lot in front of the building which is always nice. When we arrived there were a few others going to the class also arriving and they were kind enough to hold the door for us. Raquel was running a few minutes late but the front desk girl and a few of the regulars already knew to start warming up and they lead us in doing so. When Raquel arrived we got right into it. She was just the right mixture of encouraging and firm to keep us motivated throughout the hour long class. We did a variety of different exercises, went for runs around the studio, etc so there was no getting bored. When we felt like giving up there was someone else in the class shouting way to go or you can do this which was really awesome. The studio is well equipped and there are several before and after pictures from clients displayed which is very encouraging. Ive been to a couple of Raquel's classes by now and I've enjoyed them all. There are men and women of different ages and fitness levels in the classes and everyone sweats! I would definitely recommend Raquel's.

I enjoyed the class very much and decided to try a one month membership. I've seen attended the Saturday Boot Camp, Monday Shredded, and Wednesday Butts and Gutts. They offer a few classes each day (early morning class on weekdays, two evening classes, and a few morning weekend classes). They have a large loft space that can fit a ton of people (no worries about not getting into a class because it's full). There's a variety of different people--ages, genders, fitness levels and the staff is very welcoming and friendly. Easy parking in the large lot across the street. They have a variety of membership offerings and group ons right now if you want to give a try. Come spring and summer, they offer workout classes in the park which is pretty cool. Would recommend for anyone looking to try a new fitness regimen!

I wanted to find a studio which focuses on fundamentals and safety. I attended several gyms in my search and what I found were large class sizes and almost no time with the instructor. I actually re-injured my back while my partner and I were trying to figure out the technique on our own. During my first class at Solid Base my experience was exactly the opposite. I had direct exposure to the instructor during the entire session. What separates this studio from many others is that ALL classes are taught by a BJJ Black belt. In my experience you typically have to pay for individual sessions to have exposure to a black belt, while one of their students host the class. Not to mention that few people have the BJJ resume that Ricardo has (Abu Dhabi world Pro Jiu Jitsu championship COME ON!). It is rare to have a player of that level in your backyard. To be honest I would pay double for what I am getting at the gym. I would encourage anyone to come down to the gym and get a feel for the sport. It is addicting....be warned! All of the staff at The Academy are professional, kind and friendly. They were so wonderful with the kids today and made sure that nothing was forgotten. They found out my daughter's theme and even went above and beyond and purchased Minecraft plates, napkins and tablecloths: An amazing touch! Cutting the cake with a real samurai sword might have been the icing on the cake, of course only after defeating the Jedi master in a light saber battle in the dark! Top notch!! Our youngest is already asking to do his party there next year! We can't wait to see the new space when they move!!
