I dropped into a couple gyms in Kentucky. Overall, I've dropped in at over 10 gyms and this gym is my favorite so far. It is very similar to my gym of 9 years and that's probably because they're both Pedro Sauer Association gyms. If you are part of PSA, you'll understand. Even if you aren't, you will learn some high level jiu jitsu and have fun doing it over here. This school has multiple instructors, and they are all highly technical and their classes connect which gives you a great learning experience if you're a beginner or an experienced jiu jitsu practitioner. I reached out online to inquire about dropping in since I was in town. They answered me back quickly with the class times. Upon arrival, The owner, Professor Scott Smith (4th degree Black Belt), welcomed me and introduced me to some of the staff and other members. I was able to take classes under multiple instructors and it just blew my mind on the details of each technique taught. In regards to the facility, there is a huge mat area and everyone can comfortably train. When you walk in, there's the front desk and a lounge area. They have changing rooms for males and females and two restrooms. They keep the facility clean and sanitize the mats after each class session (morning/evening). We have taken our child to Gracie Jiu Jitsu of Kentucky for almost a year. During this time, my son has grown leaps and bounds in being a person and as an aspiring martial artist. We originally had "shopped" around for a school to learn to teach him. The very first school we tried was in the north eastern part of the city. Upon arriving, the atmosphere was very cold and the kids didn't seem to be having fun. We only attended the one free class. This was enough for us to know it wasn't the school for us. Then we tried Gracie Jiu Jitsu of Kentucky. Immediately upon entering the building we were greeted with smiles, laughter, and fun. Our child was 5 at the time and learning submissions is secondary to having fun and learning the fundamental body movements and control. The instructors are all great. The patience they display is amazing as controlling 4, 5, or 6 year olds is like herding cats. They listen, they learn, they get exercise, and more importantly they retain knowledge that can help them through all stages of life. The classes can vary in size, but the kids are almost always on point. There is a good mix of male to female students as well, with many of the female students doing as good or better than the males at such a young age. Jiu Jitsu is a finesse art, so brute strength does not always win and it shows with these young females. If you are looking for self defense, jiu jitsu, martial arts, self discipline, bjj, or a fun activity year round for your child, this could be the solution. read more
